I like the sailing comparison, Christopher... but any "easy sail" requires as much concentration and professionalism as does a trip down melancholy lane... 'september' and 'moonlight' are totally different albums, but each built on the very same super-high level only interpretative geniuses like Frank Sinatra could reach. These sounds will forever remain unmatched.
By recording these two albums within half a year (September in April mainly and May, Moonlight on just two sessions in November), Sinatra showed to anyone who had/has ears to listen to that he at age (almost) 50 was still the absolute master of the moods.
If pressed (and even though I am a big addict of Jenkin's work with Sinatra and rate 'September' as one of my all-time favourite albums), I would even concede that Sinatra's genius is even the more evident on "Moonlight", because Riddle's charts are more demanding than Gordy's.
