It's hard to imagine what New York and its surroundings would be like today without Robert Moses. I just wish he'd decided to retire around 1945 or so, before he made some of his most destructive ideas a reality. Perhaps NYC would have avoided some of the structural and financial disasters it faced in the '70s. Hindsight is 20/20, of course -- an awful lot of people thought he was God's gift to New York at one time.
