This is ridiculous

I read on MSN this morning that someone opened a Twitter acount in Frank Sinatra's name. Nancy is naturally upset. Who the heck would do something like this, and why ?

Good question, George. I'll speculate: A heckler wants to discredit Twitter. He could have used John Kennedy or Dean Martin, but those are common enough to be John Smiths. It isn't too often you hear of another Frank Sinatra (aside from Junior, of course).

I kind of doubt that it was all that aimed at Frank in particular; perhaps the heckler contemplated using Marilyn Monroe or Harry Houdini.

(the stupid stuff you have to deal with in managing a legacy)

Wow, that is wrong in so many ways. Disrespectful, rude and uncalled for.

Yup, Nancy talked about it on Twitter this weekend. The article George is referring to can be read here.

Hopefully the powers that be at twitter can correct this. I have never tweeted..I have absolutely no idea how twitter works. I suspect my phone is too unsophisticated to do a tweet.

There probably are some good things about Twitter, Facebook, etc. -- but I want no part of them! If this ridiculous action is allowed, who knows what else is over the horizon?

Looks like the real issue is that Twitter "verified" the account. That means that Twitter is saying it's an official, Frank Sinatra twitter account. Well-known people can get verified - that's how you know you've subscribed to, say, the real William Shatner as opposed to someone falsely using Bill's name. It's my understanding that it's pretty difficult to get verified, so how this account holder got Twitter to do so is a mystery to me.

There's tons of fans of any type of celebrity imaginable who set up fan accounts. This has been embraced, to some degree at least, by the objects of said fandom, as long as the accounts are tactful.

Most famously, a fan of the show "Mad Men" set up a couple of character accounts based on show characters and started tweeting as them. She got so popular doing it, that the show - instead of suing her - hired her to run their twitter accounts and keep tweeting as those personas.

So long story short - the real issue here is with the false verification. That's a no no and Twitter should have been more on-the-ball with that.

Twitter is a fantastic way to get information out to the masses and that is very important when you are trying to keep a legacy alive and run a business. In my experience there have been very few incidents that would make me want to stop using it.

When you see our guest count go through the roof it's because I have put a particular thread up on Twitter. People are coming to Sirius radio from Twitter as well. I love it.

Very important, indeed.

This is wonderful Nancy. I do hear so many good things about joining, and it is perfect for you. My daughters and friends all want me to join these social websites, and I appreciate it. However, I know in my heart that it is just not fo me.

And I'm sure NBC is agreeing with that declaration, Nancy.

That's a mystery to me too, Rich. It took me months to get a verification from Twitter. The handle is @ratpack_frank, I think, and he puts words in Frank's mouth. We really need to get this unverified.
