Dont plan on fading away that soon, one thing growing up under the regime of Maggie did was to toughen us all up, unfortunately I cant look back with rose coloured glasses at a period of our recent history in which whole towns and industries were destroyed, not because of sensible economics, but for simple political dogma, to a time when our police forces were used by the government as political boot-boys against valid public opposition. It is becoming obvious that Blair and his cronies are taking us down a similar road, and voices of dissent will be needed again.

My family is English and has been since 1066 (OK, we were Norman). I've travel the entire island many times and been to former "possessions" from India to kenya to Belize to New Zealand. I lived in Carlisle for a while (good rhyme). According to very reliable sources, which I'd be happy to disclose, it was common knowledge that Frank Sinatra hated London and anything English ( not just Peter Lawford). In spite of my family, I'm with him on that one.

England is a dying old man festooned with medals from a time long past. A dead horse. I'd throw my lot with progressive Scots anyday. I've lived there (Edinburgh) too. The blood shed in the name of the crown is surpassed only by that shed in the name of Christ. It's sad and it's sickening. Patriotism was the religion of the 20th century. Humanitarianism must take its place. As Booker T. Washington said, "You can hold a man down in the mud without getting mud on yourself." Greed and capitalism as virtues? Give us po' folks a break, or you'll be broken.

Although I agree with much of what Jim has to say, I think I will take issue with the statement that blood shed in the name of the crown is sickening, I agree all bloodshed is sickening but sometimes its needed, my thoughts on our system of Gov't and my desire for a Republic but without sacrifices made by many millions of our countrymen in recent history we could all be under the yolk of that most evil of systems Fascism, now there is the real sickener, Jim.....

One of the fantastic things about this little island of ours is the multi-cultural identity that we have, in our long history Angles, Celts, Romans, Saxons, Normans, Hugenots, Dutch etc have contributed to our Britishness, and latterly the contributions of peoples from our imperial past have all blended to make this small nation the great country it is......so really the question is "Who isn't a foreigner?"

You are so right! I said a stupid thing about the crown and bloodshed. Even if I'd said "crowns" I'd have been wrong.
As for Fascism, my father and uncles fought in that war and I agree that it is a greater evil than imperialism. I would be content to wear a kilt and throw a spear, but I would never bow to that Nazi line of bull. How so many did continues to be a mystery.

Anyway, I do like your queen. She's had to put up with a lot , but still carries herself with great dignity and grace. And I'm really not so down on the English. If I were I'd have to change my name. Sometimes, like many of us, my fingers move faster than my brain, and I forget that that sweet little lady who rents a room to me at her B & B near Victoria Station might be offended.
She has 25 cats, I do love that.
