Hiya Tony

Brittas and the legendary Arnold Rimmer from Red Dwarf were both played by Chris Barrie, who also used to do the voice for Maggie Thatcher on Spitting Image.

Alison - I know

The Goodies, yes great show, Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden, Tim Brook Taylor. I liked the one with the giant kitten.

All my friends at school liked The Bay City Rollers, I was disgusted with them, they thought I was mad loving Elvis and Dean Martin - I have the last laugh now because guess what music they are buying now I was also into Bowie, Marc Bolan (love his music!) and Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel (gosh remember them!). Nowhere near as much as Dino tho

Police shows were very gentle then weren't they? No-one got shot in the head whilst have their head pushed in a deep fat fryer did they?

I know a lot of people are urging the BBC to bring back the Goodies. I have seen a couple of episodes. I didn't really like it. Well I would say I didn't laugh at it much, but I did notice it had a wonderful anarchic feel to it. Anything could happen. I admire programmes like that.

Production methods have changed greatly since the 70s. Now a producer can be working in London at a desktop PC, and making all the good stuff happen, but at the same time, a group of post-production operators can be putting the corporate gloss on their work, but that group could be on the other side of the country, in Bristol, Manchester or Newcastle. Glasgow could be putting on the interactive subtitles. Work in progress is stored on a huge server with authorised producers all putting in their own stuff. Gone are the days of Monty Python, where a group of producer/performers/writers were given a camera and told to get on with it. I'd like to work in the 'seat of your pants' environment from time to time.

No ones mentioned the music shows from Six Five Special, Oh Boy, Boy Meets Girl, Cool for Cats, Dig This, Drumbeat, Thank Your Lucky Stars, Juke Box Jury long before TOTP....... pure nostalgia

Hi Tony

Marty just asked "Were these shows available in the days of gas power TV?".

He just said "I'll give that foive." Why would he make me spell it that way, Tony?

The Goodies

Wouldn't work today, things have progressed so much since they were on TV, in their day they were quite progressive! They are a bit tame by today's standards and I doubt I would find them funny now.

I am not even going down that road, bad jokes about tools come to mind but I am not going there

Goodness knows why I have been saddled with this name, one never knows with Greg, but I have to live with it! It is meant with real affection and that's the main thing!

Alison - I remember Grotbags, she used to be on when my boys were young, they used to point to the screen and shout "there's Mummy!"

From a Half Brit

and that's not half wit Mum was a WWII war bride.

I must be the most ancient one in here. I remember Sooty. Who was his buddy? We got Sooty through the Mickey Mouse Club, in the 50's.

I don't think American's have been privy to British TV until PBS and BBC America. With PBS we started to get Benny Hill, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, To the Manor Born, Ab Fab, Butterflies, Coronation Street, Alas Smith and Jones, All Creatures...., As Time Goes By, Are You Being Served, Ballykissangel, BlackAdder, Coupling, and many more, now that I look at a list of the programmes, I could go on and on.

My faves, are the comedies.

Leanne, did you know that Peter Sellers was a Goon? We used to get Goon shows on the radio and I loved them.

Anything with Monty Python and that lot.

Benny Hill was a funny show but I've just recently begun to appreciate the man, Benny Hill. Strange life I read, but so incredibly animated and I love all the men on his show. Loved the patting of the little old man.

On BBC America, we are just getting Little Britain and Brilliant. I love both. The Office is brilliant.

Father Ted took getting used to for me, mainly because of Father Jack and his mess, if ya know what I mean. I love Mrs. Doyle, gawan, gawan, gawan and Dougal, who is The Hero, right?

I see there was one called The Gnomes of Dulwich. Is that new or old?

I love the dramatic and mystery series as well.

I'll leave this to the full Brits now.

Izzy Whizzy Let's Get Busy, (sounds like a rap song)

An answer for Tricia.

Sooty's sidekick was a little grey dog called Sweep, they both used to fawn over a little tease of a Panda called Sue. Whereas Sooty never spoke, apart from whispering in Mr Corbett's ear, Sweep used to speak in Mr Punch whistles and Sue had rather a cultured English accent (which used to confuse me back in the 70s as Panda's only came from China)
While we are on the subject of hand puppets (Sooty, Emu etc.) whatever happened to Frank Bough?

Dawn French did a brilliant take off of Catherine Zeta Jones this evening, I will never be able to view Catherine the same way again
