40th Anniversary of My Way
This song gives me chills every time I hear it because of the well written lyrics, the tone of the song, and the voice that sings it. December 30, 1968...the best song ever written and recorded.

![]() You do realize that "My Way" was originally a French pop tune titled "Comme d'Habitude" (1967), sung by Claude François, who co-penned the music with Jacques Revaux and French lyrics of a totally different meaning by Gilles Thibaült? Frank was not at all fond of the English lyrics, despite the song's popularity. |

However, the song is very popular, so there's a lot of people who do enjoy it.

It is amazing how many people do like the song though. Sarah Palin, anyone?

I always think "My Way" is about the end of ones life, not a celebration but sad.
The song is played at the end of the "Sinatra Show" where a fedora is placed on a lonely Mic stand in spot light. |

I'm one of those people. The ones who like the song. I don't think it's the best, but I like it and listen to it occasionally.

a huge international hit!
I like the song I know Frank didn't much, the French version of the song by Claude François is soo different, rather bland "comme d'habitude" (like usual)

A VERY powerful song..
Covered by a number of people, including Elvis, Sid Vicious and Robbie Williams, but Frank owns it.... if we like it or not.

Adam,
I like the idea that you are so strong for this song. We should all be as excited and emphatic about something as you are about "My Way". Alas, I too am of the group that does not particularly favor this song. That said however I must credit "My Way" for creating a bridge between my friends of that era and me. I graduated from high school in 1969. All my school chums understood that I lacked the Rock gene and only followed the music of Sinatra. We simply didn't share our musical interests, I, of course, being the oddball in the group. At that time the Beatles and the Stones ruled the roost (IMO). But I still remember one night in a noisy bar in Port Chester, NY where we gathered during the holidays of our freshmen year at college, when one of my pals screamed into my ear that he liked Sinatra's new hit. Even then I wasn't very fond of this song but I happily acknowledged the compliment that wintry night among the clamor of that tiny beer joint that was Manley's. I've never forgotten the moment. Count me in for those that do enjoy MY WAY. I know that most folks have ill feelings towards the writer of the lyrics, But you could never tell that Frank didn't care for it. The man always gave everything he had.

David Bowie recorded a demo of the first English language version of "comme d'habitude" early in 1968, which had entirely different self written lyrics entitled "Even a Fool Learns to Love", his rendition has rather a sweet naive psychedelic feel to be honest, unfortunately for Bowie somebody else quickly bought up the rights to the tune and penned their "own" lyrics.
Bowie's famous "Life On Mars" is his personal musical dig at the song. I personally find the banality of the more famous lyrics better suited to the post modern nihilism of Sid Vicious. If nothing else it's the ultimate pissed up karaoke number for partying tone deaf medical students. |

Nobody can ever sing this classic other than Frank!
There is just no doubt about this at all. Paul Anka did a great thing by giving this song to Frank. Paul is a great writer and singer too. Happy 40th to a masterpiece inside and out! |

Paul is a jerk. Didn't you wonder, Dan, why no one mentioned his name in this thread (until you)?
P.S. And Dan: Before you respond with the inevitable rejoinder, see here. Read the whole thread, and leave any replies over there (or better, not). Let's keep this one free of conflict, ok? |

Comme d'habitude
My take on the song "My Way". I find that people who don't follow Sinatra that much like the song better than those who are very knowledgeable about all of his work. People who don't follow Frank's music don't appreciate the songs that were not big hits like "My Way".
