Books about Frank

What's your favorite book about Frank Sinatra? I'd really like to know.

I've got a shelf full of books about FS, and frankly (!) I don't think most of them are very good. What do you think of this or that book?

Donald, with all due respect it may have been an idea to have requested permission from one of the site's moderators before posting details about your own book here.

Especially given your book is not authorised by the Sinatra family, who are coincidentally responsible for this site. I'd therefore encourage you to get to know the forum a little bit first before jumping in with the promotional posts, and would DEFINITELY encourage you to seek the okay before posting on said subject in that manner again.

We don't seek to quash discussion of the works of any authors however to start a thread entitled "Books About Frank" (when there are several already extant) and to use the majority of the first post therein to detail availability and reviews of your own work can seem little against the spirit of the forum whatever the book's merits.

We hope you understand our concerns and the reason for the editing, thanks.

I have two. Nancy's and Tina's because when you read them you know you're reading the truth.

Then I gather you don't read much of anything on any subject because no one has a monopoly on the truth or anything else. For any Sinatra supporter to state that they have only read two books on Frank indicates to me how little interest they have in him. Most of us I think would say they read everything they can get their hands on about Frank Sinatra except for the obviously malicious tomes that we all know about beforehand. I consider myself smart enough to 'see through' and dismiss comments made by a number of writers.

And I'm sorry but statements like that one also can be reasons why our forum does not attract more members. It just sounds like a need to score some brownie points which in my mind seem to abound on this forum.

Marty - I am sorry to use GB's comment as a diversion from your well thought-out post. I could have added a lot more but my lack of diplomacy is one of the many reasons I am not a mod - nor do I wish to be.

P.S. Sorry, George. What I said sounds unkind to you but in view of the other subject at hand, I felt the need to let loose because of Marjorie's excellent thoughts on the forum and reasons that others may not find us interesting enough. Too much of the same accolades (not for Frank, of course) but accolades for so many replies to posts on every subject here.

Joanie, Marty's point is well-taken in that our members who reach a certain number of posts have been around long enough to present their wares. It's only a matter of patience and then all privileges are accessible.

Don, upon reaching a certain post count, 50 or maybe less, clearances open up subforums which discuss at length the topic you've touched on.

Judging from your comments, I believe you will find much written simpatico to your views. As you can probably speculate, in the past, opportunists have jumped the gun solely for their own interests, and site management here has arrived at a certain protocol which is easy to accommodate.

I have read many many books on Frank. But, the poster who started this thread was asking, " what's your favorite book about Frank Sinatra." I said I had two and named them and the reason why they were my favorite. I don't understand how that caused such a hostile reply.

Joan added this post script for you:

(This post, in case George doesn't see Joan's edition-addendum.)

One of my neighbours lost his mum just a while ago and recently he came to me and said my dad bought this book for my mum and I want it to go to a good home so would you please accept it, I know you will look after it. The book was Frank Sinatra, An American Legend by Nancy Sinatra, what a wonderful gift and I will certainly treasure it

I have quite a few... but no question my two most favorites are 'My Father' and 'An American Legend' by Nancy Sinatra

I am so sorry, George. I did not read your post carefully, short though it was. I thought you said you had only read two. A real goof on my part.

And thanks Philly John.

That's okay. Joan. I have a pretty thick skin most of the time.
Kindest regards,
George

Doneth,
Of course there are tons of books out on Sinatra. But as George stated, Nancy and Tina's books are the two must reads. The obvious reason is that Nancy and Tina can discuss real life scenarios and details about Mr. Sinatra's life. Other authors may think they know the true Frank, but the Sinatra family are the only ones who do.

Here's my 5 penneth. Since joining the forum I have discovered and read at least four more books on FS . Then I went back through my so called junk and found 3 more, mostly pictorial.
I think the most informative for me are My Father, My Father's Daughter, An American Legend, Why Sinatra Matters and The Sinatra Family Album by Charles Pignone. I do keep going back to the Dorling Kindersley tome "Sinatra" with the one blue eye front and rear because it is so informative on the record productions and comments, both good and bad, from people who had the luck to meet him.
There are comments and views in many other books such as Ava Gardner's bio and the Harry James bio Trumpet Blues which I am currently getting through (slow reader here). But as they say above, there are other threads covering the written words....good and bad.

Let's not forget Bill Zehme's wonderful book, The Way You Wear Your Hat. He captured the man.

Coincidentally I took that off the shelf 20 minutes ago Ace as I'm planning an early night with a cup of tea, haven't had a chance to read it yet.

It's a good read, Bill, very conversational. Nancy gives it her full endorsement, as well. She said, "Billy Z gets it."

I said this about five years ago:

... I just finished Bill Zehme's (Zemmy) book and loved it. He paints such a personal, personable, and wonderfully flowing picture of The Man, with insights into the little details of his daily life, that you feel like a good friend. Highly recommended.
