Frank Sinatra : Album Of The Month Club #11 (July 2008) "Sinatra '65"

Come this here July.......

Sinatra '65
Track List:
Side One

1. Tell Her (You Love Her Each Day)
2. Anytime At All
3. Main Theme From "The Cardinal" (Stay With Me)
4. I Like To Lead When I Dance
5. You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me
6. My Kind Of Town

Side Two:

7. When Somebody Loves You
8. Somewhere In Your Heart
9. I've Never Been In Love Before
10. When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love
11. Luck Be A Lady

From an interivew with Jimmy Bowen, Mr. S.'s producer:

"You know, he phrases greater than anybody who ever sang. He handles a lyric like you'll handle a woman.
A woman has to be handled like a time bomb, you know, and that's the way he does a lyric."

I love this LP, compilation or not, the Jimmy Bowen pop arrangements also work for me and as others have stated, FS just seems relaxed and full voiced on all of the tracks.
I actually have a cassette copy made from the LP in 1985 which still sounds (pretty) good. I hope it is released on CD one day although it can be re-created from the Reprise "suitcase" 20 cd Box Set.

A great choice for July!

Sinatra '65 is one of the best compilation albums that Reprise released. The album has a great group of songs and I especially like... My Kind Of Town, Anytime At All, I Like To Lead When I Dance, I've Never Been In Love Before and When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love.

I also hope that this album will be released on CD someday because a few of the songs are only available on The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings.

God rest their souls, both Mark (MAP55) and Russell Kishi made posts back to back a few years ago that they had found a sealed (Mark) and a near mint condition copy (Russkish3 ) of this LP at record stores in NYC and LA.

Ok, I am going to stick my neck out and be the dissenting voice on this lp.

First - "Anytime At All" a little bit Elvis? I'm a huge Elvis fan and I fail to see any essence of Elvis in this song. But then my favorite Elvis era is the 50s rockabilly. I am very familiar with all of his work, nonetheless, of all the songs I've heard do, this one seems very "dated" -- it is my least favorite song of 's. Maybe it's that I did not care for that early 60s pop stuff in general........ So I don't mean to rain on anyone's love of this song, but I just don't "get" this one.

The songs I do like on this lp are "Tell Her You Love Her " - 's voice is lovely, "Stay with Me" is a song that I don't imagine I would like if anyone other than FS were singing it - I love the "tenor" of his voice on this one, very moving.

I LOVe the sentiment and rhythm of "I Like to Lead When I Dance"! YES YES YES! also love "I've Never Been in Love Before" - this is classic to me.

"New Kind of Love" is a song that I've always liked by other singers and, of course, I love 's rendition, his voice is rich, and I love the "swing" of the song and the sax!

"When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" - very ah...........interesting lyrics - how on earth did he manage to rhyme bosom -- woosum??? what the heck is a woosum? partick-el and pickle

Overall, I find this a very eclectic lp - a bit odd - does not connect for me.

Having said all that, I am very happy to have been able to listen to it.

To "woo" someone is to pursue them Therefore, "As long as they have a bosom, I woos 'em." Justs ne of the brilliantlyl fun rhymes inthe song as written by Yip Harburg. Yip also wrote the words to such songs as Over the Rainbow, Brother Can You Spare a Dime, Last Night When We Were Young, Lydia, the Tatooed Lady and April in Paris. This is not a typical Frank Sinatra song, but he owns it. I've heard good versions by others, but none come close to the verve, feeling and sense of character that Frank puts into it with a fine Riddle arrangement. A real killer performance. He originally recorded it as part of the four disc Reprise Repertory package in 1963.

Having said all that, I am very happy to have been able to listen to it.
It's a terrific collection.

This is not a concept album, so the song selections weren't carefully chosen but it's stil a very good collection of songs that's fun to hear once in awhile. And I really like Anytime At All.

Exactly, Edwin!
I really dig this LP - every song on it, in fact. So there.

While I like the album selection, I find it illegal that Gij got to choose this month in the wake of the Beantown bashing he's about to suffer. It is obviously a forum conspiracy against me...again!
