Frank Sinatra : Album Of The Month Club #6 (Feb 2008) "Strangers In The Night"

I know, I know....Frank hated the song. But, dare I say, he was WRONG. Proving that even deity can make a mistake. Hell, I made one once too. But as I mentioned in another thread, "Downtown" is wearing out my Ipod this week. It is a fun tune for one to listen. And "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" surely split some trumpeters lips and others must have required oxygen.

1. "Strangers in the Night" (Bert Kaempfert, Charles Singleton, Eddie Snyder) – 2:25
2. "Summer Wind" (Heinz Meier, Hans Bradtke, Johnny Mercer) – 2:53
3. "All or Nothing at All" (Arthur Altman, Jack Lawrence) – 3:57
4. "Call Me" (Tony Hatch) – 3:07
5. "You're Driving Me Crazy!" (Walter Donaldson) – 2:15
6. "On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)" (Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe) – 3:17
7. "My Baby Just Cares for Me" (Donaldson, Gus Kahn) – 2:30
8. "Downtown" (Hatch) – 2:14
9. "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" (Donaldson, Kahn) – 2:08
10."The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" (Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart) – 2:24

All of these tunes are a fun listen. "Call Me" is still a fan favorite with an arrangement that kicks booty. Love the album.

This album was my introduction to FS's music, in the 60's when it was released. I still love it. #2 and #3 are my faves.

Here's the obligatory link to Frank's Recordings: Strangers In The Night (1966).

This album was played over and over again when I was growing up in the 60's and became a fan of Frank's when I heard the 'Strangers in the night' LP...I still have the same LP from when it was first bought and you can tell too, because the cover is real warned and when you take the LP out, you can actually see the hisses and scratches on the LP..there is a scratch on the'Downtown' recording, but that's it, otherwise it's in perfect shape..This album is truly a great classic masterpiece!

Paul: I think Rick jumped the gun a bit. It's the same reason he keeps showing up two weeks early for dinner with Nancy, and then wonders why it is that she stood him up.

For the record, there was no jumping involved. Gun?...yes....but no jumping. Jumping with a gun can be dangerous.

Why did Frank dislike Strangers in the night so much Rick or Bob?

I'm not really sure why, Daniel. But Will Friewald is where I first read about his dislike of the song and his utter surprise at how well it sold.

But I must now fess up because I too have made mistakes in my life. The latest being the creation of this thread. An unnamed person of some repute had suggested I should select an album for the "Album of the month" discussion thread. This person suggested that it be mid-reprise era and since I've been enjoying this album recently in my rotation, I selected it. What I didn't bother to read at the end of the message was this line.
Quote:
....start the thing last day of Jan or 1st of Feb.
so mark the date. RJA made a mistake on this date in 2008.

North of the border up Ontario way.

I like "All Or Nothing At All" for it's build up from the beginning to the end. A prime example of leaving somewhere to go.
My other favourite is "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". An example of starting fast and staying that way to the end. (Watch it on "A Man And His Music Part II".)

This is an interesting choice of albums. I have always considered FS' version of The Summer Wind the best of all versions.

I also think it's a little early to post about February's Album Of The Month. January isn't over yet! There' about 10 days still left.

But good album choice, Rick.

Strangers In The Night isn't my favorite Sinatra recording, but I listen to this LP fairly often.

just the album cover alone, I would become an instant fan, even without hearing the songs
