Frank's Movies

First, I love Frank's movies. He was a gifted entertainer, actor, and of course, singer of the first rank (nobody better). In his body of works, what strikes me sometimes is that when I'm watching one of the musicals, you can tell that he is completely natural. He comes across so well, you just fold into the movie with him.

Frank's dramatic parts are world class, as well. Especially, "Suddenly," "Man With The Golden Arm," and the classic, "From Here To Eternity." He was utterly believable in each of those roles, which I believe is the mark of a truly great actor.

Oh, he made a couple of stinkers too, "The Pride And The Passion," "The Kissing Bandit," and Charlie says, "Dirty Dingus Magee." I liked that one, though.

I guess what I'm getting at is sometimes Frank seemed to me to simply be reading his lines, and in those movies it looked like he didn't have his heart into it. Any thoughts from forum members on movies he made where there were underlying motivations, or lack of motivation, for some of his movies? Where you could tell that maybe he was making the movie because he was under contract, really didn't have much interest in the part, etc.?

Frank's Movies

Frank was excellant in just about every movie he made, and their were afew clinkers, as Ahab627 just mentioned.

I think the least favorite of his movies (my opinion only) is
1967 The Naked Runner. I don't think he enjoyed making that movie and just sort of walked thru it. Plus the story wasn't very good. I don't know if he was just fulfilling a contract, be he just wasn't Sinatra in that movie.

Hi, Fred!

I believe we have another member, Charlie (Charlotte) that is from Fredricksburg, VA, but I'd better check on that to be sure!

IMHO, Mr. S. made a couple of medocre flicks, one especially (I think) at the bottom of the list if "Pride & the Passion." Gad zukes, that haircut and the accent were pretty unbelievable. "DDD" was about as bad, but I thought it hillarious!

This reminds me of his fantastic recording in 1956 "There's A Flaw In My Flue." This recording is so clever, and you could just tell he was spoofing thru the entire session. But I digress. . . . .

Here's Mr. S. as Dingus! Not the most sexiest kid on the block for sure!

AND HERE'S CHARLIE!!!

You have a neighbor, my sister! Amazing, I mention your name and there you are. We are definitely on the same wave lenght it's scary!

I had forgotten about "The Naked Runner." You're right, again! And then there's also "Assault on a Queen." I didn't mind that one too much, but he was a bit stiff and the dialogue had alot to be desired, and the screenplay by Rod Serling yet. The music was by the great Duke so that made up for any underlying absenses in dialogue!

Now this "Fred" ain't your Fred, is he?

This is one of my top selections!

Dingus

A film so bad it was hilarious - surely tongue in cheek all the way through...
Please tell me he was spoofing himself...
I even got the poster from the cinema to put up in my room (amongst all the hundreds of other pictures of FS that plastered mt wall). My parents thought I was totally bonkers...
The poster, as I recall, had him in the ghastly pink long johns WITHOUT the smock (as pictured above)
Much prefer the other photo!
I liked the Naked Runner, by the way - not his best by far - but better than Pride and the Kissing Bandit by a long chalk..

Hey Bill,

Stalked? You wouldn't believe how this woman is stalking me. Can't get away from her. She follows me all around the house. Mostly picking up after me. Sometimes she pours me a Vodka & Tonic, but she forgets to squeeze the chunk of lime. Some stalkers just don't follow the rules. Go figure!

BLONDS!!!! Now this is why all those stories are TRUE!!!

Ok, Char & Fred, here is your pic from your anniversary party at the Lux Lounge, remember??? Now we're really digressing! That was a blast!

Doesn't squeeze the lime? Darn, guess you'll just have to fire her after all these fourty plus years, eh?

You never had it so good, kiddo!

Lux

Added: Oh, and it's so great that you both love Mr. S. Abe only tolerates my obsession, and that's even stretching it! And we're 45 years, too!

Frank's Movies

Frank turns in a wonderful performance in From Here To Eternity. I also enjoy him in Pal Joey and High Society and Young At Heart. And I love him in every single movie that he did. I really can't say a bad thing about his acting. I guess I'm terribly prejudiced, but that's okay because I love Frank so much with all my heart.

Frank's Movies

You know I liked "The Naked Runner" and really got turned on to the song "You Are There" from the film. I think Sinatra was a tremendous acting talent. He believed in the naturalness of the scene and not the method acting bit. He wasn't into rehearsing the scenes to any great degree. The great films he made were Pal Joey, The Joker is Wild, Come Blow Your Horn, The Detective, Manchurian Candidate, Eternity (of course)...Man With The Golden Arm (absolutely deserving of the Oscar for that one)...High Society, Suddenly, Young at Heart, Tender Trap, Some Came Running, Hole in the Head, Never So Few, Ocean's 11, Robin & the 7 Hoods, Von Ryan's Express, ..And even Tony Rome, Lady in Cement, and some of the early ones w/Gene Kelly, Meet Danny Wilson, etc. The only "clunkers" I remember were Kissing Bandit, Pride & The Passion (ggod cast, though), Johnny Concho, Dirty Dingus Magee...But Frank's contribution to the Movie industry was certainly significant...
