NANCY: telethon tapes?

dear miss sinatra!
do you also have access to the many telethon appearances that frank sinatra made over the years?
he gave some very good performances there.
i remember one 1980 show where he is interviewed via satellite live from a show in atlantic city. he talks to jerry lewis , then sings "new york" and other songs.
i thought, if there were cameras to broadcast the segment, then it would only be logical to tape the whole show, since i do not think they interrupted the show to bring in the equipment.
this would also make a thrilling video and CD.

all new ideas!

Steffan, I taped that segment. I think it's the single most exciting version of "New York, New York" I've seen or heard.

Steffan Great Idea

Steffan ,

I too also wondered about that . I remember seeing many Sinatra shows via telethons or performances on the Carson show etc. It would be exciting to being able to purchase them. I know people are selling them but refuse to purchase ANYTHING that is not endoresed by the Family or the legitimate lables .

Nancy , are then any plans in the future to do this ?

Telethons and concerts

We have MANY concert tapes, but the person who has them is not forthcoming about sending them to us. There always seem to be delays in this neverending process of getting the shows to the fans. Although I have not heard them yet myself, I am concerned about the quality because the shows were recorded on audio cassettes. Hopefully the sound will be enhanced in the transfer to digital, but we will have to keep them analog as long as we possibly can, running them through various machines, prior to the final digital shift.

Part of the wonder of analog is that one can "feel" the air in the room. You will be aware of that if you listen to your LPs. They still have the best sound, in my opinion.

I taped Dad's appearances on Jerry's Telethons but the tapes are not the best quality. The cameras usually didn't roll until the scheduled songs, but I will ask Jerry about this when he
is feeling better. Maybe there is some hidden treasure there.

As you know there are some new things coming soon, so perhaps everyone will enjoy those for a while and be more patient with us and the arduous process. We are doing the best we can.

Thanks for understanding.

Interesting note, Nancy, about the down side of digital

Before a lot of us got jaded years ago, we used to be obsessed with tapes of live performances of artists versus studio productions. Then we'd be a bit disappointed if an artist stopped touring (never mind the skyrocketed cost after OPEC, we were just consumers) and only worked in the studio.

But it's apparently a factor like a clear sheet of rock capturing a fossillized bug, even with a live source tape, that shift to digital. Even the projection of screaming girls can sound somehow contained.

thanks

thank you for the answers. the telethon version of "new york" was indeed special.
i hope jerry lewis gets well soon.
i think there must be original tapes, maybe in the tv vaults. i hope a collaboration with the tv networks is possible. i think this is important too for televised shows like the maracana show from rio.

"...We have MANY concert tapes, but the person who has them is
not forthcoming about sending them to us..."

i can not imagine why someone would want to hold back the tapes. WHY?? if they read this, i can only address those people in question, to team up with the sinatrafamily and also to think of the fans. please, make it possible!

Steffan,

I rememember Frank Sinatra's performance from that 1980 telethon. I was 16 at the time and fell in love with him right then and there. Have been a fan ever since. Of all the great moments and performances from the Labor Day telethons, I would say Mr. Sinatra's were definitely the best, the most electrifying and the most emotional. I think Sammy Davis Jr. was a close second!

Sinatra's 1980 MDA Telethon Performance

Just wanted to metion that I have the 1980 Sinatra performance on videotape on the MDA Telethon. Jerry Lewis released a retrospective during the early hours of the telethon in 1999. So, the print I have is a clean clip. Sinatra's performance in his November 12, 1977, appearance on the Tonight Show as he sang and when he hosted the show a year later.

Yes

After checking the archives, I can report with certainty that we do have the MDA Telethon tapes. Whether or not we will be able to do anything with them is another question entirely. I don't want to bore you again with another diatribe about clearances and licensing but that's what we would face if we were to try to make them available.

Time will tell on all of these things. Each tape has to be approached separately. Maybe someday I will be able to respond with a resounding YES! It's all coming out! Believe me I would be as happy as you if that were to happen.

Meanwhile, try to be patient and allow the products that have been cleared to quench your thirst. There are quite a few on their way to you in the next few months. Though it may not seem like it, we really are working on these
things every day and there are a lot of surprises in the works. Unfortunately all of the logistics and details take time.

For Ms. Sinatra

Hi Ms. Sinatra,

Did you mean you have the whole performances, or just the parts that were actually broadcast on the telethon? And if and when you release them, would that be on CD or video?

thank you, ms. sinatra, for checking the archives.
did you find the whole show from august 1980, or have you to talk back to mr jerry lewis first for that show?

the short performances would be cool in their own right. but a concert would be special.

NANCY: any updates? (whole concert or parts only)

ms. sinatra, i just was reminded of this older thread and wondered if jerry is better, and if you have been able to talk to him meanwhile.

main subject was the concert segment from the 1980 telethon, that showed frank in atlantic city.
does this wonderful concert exist as a whole, or did the cameras only tape the scheduled songs?

>>...After checking the archives, I can report with certainty that
we do have the MDA Telethon tapes...<<
Is that only the broadcast segments, or the whole show?

thank you so much, steffen.

Jerry is Recovering

Hi Steffen!!

I just wanted to let you know that Jerry is on his way to recovery as of the last couple of months. There was a time where Jerry didn't know if he was going to make it during last winter. He has been suffering with pulmonary pneumonia. I had the good fortune of seeing Jerry on May 31st last year in one of his last public appearances before the telethon at a Laughter and Healing Seminar in Toronto.

Mr. Lewis had an electric pain blocker implemented in his body to cancel all of the back pain he suffers from daily. The pneumonia kept him on a strict regimen of 28 pills daily as his lung collasped. The regiman called for him to be on Peridisone which caused Mr. Lewis to gain over 30 pounds which was quite evident during Telethon 2001.

Mr. Lewis is keeping very busy and as you know, he's got 9 lives and had used 4 of them during the last 30 years. He believes he will outlive George Burns. We hope, very much he does. To read more about Jerry first hand, here is a Las Vegas Magazine interview published a couple of months ago:

http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/st...ml?Jerry+Lewis

Please e-mail me if you would like to know more or chat about Mr. Sinatra.

PS.- Mrs. Sinatra...I hope all is well with you

Thanks Charles for the update on Jerry Lewis's health; I know we all here wish him the best and thank him for all the years of dedication to Jerry's kids (and adults).
I believe Mr. Lewis is 76 this year, so he has a way to go to match George Burns, and he's never been nearly as laid back as George, but who knows? Maybe he'll make, and hopefully we'll all be here to help him celebrate.
