Just received my copies of these discs. Until now the only copies of these two albums that I owned were the horrid and garbled sounding 1998/2002 remasters. What a revelation to hear these songs mastered with the care and respect they deserve! Shawn Britton and Rob LoVerde have done a fantastic job on these reissues. I only hope that Mobile Fidelity can licence more Sinatra product from Capitol...

Splendid work, Shawn! I am truly enjoying both CDs - "OTL" in particular.

Bump

I'm listening to Only The Lonely right now and was re-reading this thread. The MFSL CDs still amaze me... I wish all FS CDs sounded this good!

Martin, please can you give an explanation why you came to these figures. Is there something else which possibly could have or should have been done to improve these recordings further and was not?

Yes. The 4.5 is me saying it's almost perfect. IMO, the sound would be best if it had a tubier character than heard on this release, with more glow, bloom to the midrange, and so on. Otherwise, I really can't find fault with it - they did a great job.

"Angel Eyes" speed

I successfully synced up the mono & stereo tracks for "Only the Lonely" and did a mix of them, but when trying to do the same for "Angel Eyes" the mono version seems to run a little faster. I think I can hear that it's sharper. Although I'm no musician, the MoFi version just sounds painfully wrong . Anyone know which runs at the correct speed & pitch?

I don't believe it sounds "painfully wrong," but see the thread over at the Steve Hoffman Music Forums: Sinatra "Angel Eyes" speed on MoFi Only the Lonely.

I wonder why they couldn't have remastered both and included them on the same CD. Surely there was enough room. Hip-o-Select did this with WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO? by The Supremes.

I take the point that making them a "2 for 1" product would have saved us all money, but these are premium products, not for the "average" CD Buyer so I guess this wasnt considered, I've no objection to it really; the same could have been done for the Concepts and Capitol Years Boxes in a lot of cases, but would have made it a slimmer, less good looking package

ONLY THE LONELY is about 54-55 minutes. A CD can only hold about 80 minutes. Mono and stereo of this album will not fit on one CD.

I have a couple of discs that are CD on one side and DVD on the other.

I wonder why no one ever thought of doing a double sided CD?

You could have original and remastered on separate sides.

Probably a bit pointless in the long run, but I can't believe no CD has ever been produced that was two sided??????

It has been done. As you mentioned Sony tried the "Dual Discs" one side CD the other DVD. They failed miserably. The main problem as I understand it is that the discs don't play in many CD players. Especially car stereos. I think you would have the same problem with 2 sided CDs. The discs have to be made thicker than normal which creates problems for many players. There is also the issue with handling discs with data on both sides.

More to the original intent of this thread...

Has anybody heard anything about any more MFSL Sinatra CDs? I heard a lot of talk when they came out, now nothing. That can't be a good sign.

While not perfect (and pretty costly) these CDs are nonetheless must haves for any Sinatra fan. It sure would be nice to see some more.

Agreed Steve; on both counts; standard CD players have the laser calibrated to play discs that are 1.2mm thick, to make readable data play on both sides you would need a thicker disc and most peoples machinery couldnt play it, nothing wrong with a 2 CD set instead.
As for more MFSL Sinatra, agreed, would be nice to have all the Capitol albums available on this format, like you Ive not heard of anything in the near future (and have their wonderful LP set of the same material). I doubt these sets make a fortune for them and are for quite a niche market so it may be too much to expect. I, and many here, would definitely buy them though.

Well personally I'd liked to see "Come Fly With Me" next, of course there is Wee small hours, Affair and Lovers but I'd like a stereo upbeat one next if possible.

Mobile Fidelity has just announced two new upcoming releases, both on 180g vinyl:

Sinatra & Sextet Live in Paris (double album) and Sinatra & Strings (original 10-track album).

Though this is indeed exciting news, it begs the question: what became of their program for releasing the entire Capitol catalog?

Great news George thanks. I try to buy any LPs released on 180g. "Francis A. and Edward K." is due to be out soon too. "September Of My Years" and " Sinatra And Jobim" are fantastic on 180g.

I assume that MFSL would issue the mono mix of "Come Fly With Me", if they ever get around to issue that title. The mono mix of the title song can be heard on the "Catch Me If You Can" soundtrack...
