This is soooooooooooooooo exciting, words can't express how excited I am!
However I too am finding it difficult as to envisage anyone playing FS, I mean whoever gets the job is going to have to be at the top of their game but I can't wait to see the results

Yes, I agree, David. And show his perfectionism which went along with his musical genius, his smarts and drive that kept him up there for so long and his uncanny ability to reinvent himelf from the young teenage idol long before teen idols Elvis and the Beatles were around, to the musical innovator and the existential loner of Wee Small Hours to the swinging, entrepreneural showman founder of Reprise Records to the fine actor he became. To me and to many of us here, the music is the most important.

As Stephen Holden wrote right after Frank Sinatra passed on, "Frank Sinatra has gone, but of course he will alwyas be with us. But which Frank Sinatra will be the one who is most remembered? Our historical memory tends to select a particular image of the legend and it is not always the most honorable one."

Those of us on this forum are not typical of the general public. Many people today think of the Ring A Ding, tough guy, the lover image, the man who sang Strangers in the Night and whose reputation has been hurt by all the salacious crap that has been written.

You need someone who has a real feel for the music and the era! John Pizzarelli,Jr. comes to mind.Maybe DeCaprio for the elder Sinatra. I will go just for the music, however!Notice I didn`t recommend J.S.

Very true.

When I watched the tv mini-series remake of "From Here to Eternity" I was impressed by Joe Pantoliano's reprisal of Frank's role as Maggio. There was a slight similarity in appearance and it was clear that Joey Pants modeled his portrayal after Frank's performance.

Here's a picture of Pantoliano from a recent Dr. Vegas appearance:

Johnny Depp?

I think he can handle the age range from the earliest James/Dorsey years to the early Reprise years. He is a musician and singer himself. Unconventional. Edgy. Daring. I think he would throw himself into it with a respect and commitment that would be exciting to watch.

When Scorcese was planning to shoot a Dean Martin Biopic, he wanted John Travolta to be casted as Sinatra. Reports through the internet even say that he was adamant about that (google and maybe you´ll find it)

That would be a bad choice I think.

I heard about this today on...ahem...another Sirius Show. It's about time. Scorcese will do it well. I can't even think of who should play Frank. I'll leave that to the experts. But it's exciting. I hope it ends well. The Dean Martin thing went nowhere. But Kevin Spacey handled Bobby Darin in the beautiful film Beyond The Sea beautifully! I hope this will end up to be a beautiful movie. Thank you.

I'm psyched for this, but I can already hear the complaints that will follow the movie's release, complaints from fans decrying the historical inaccuracy of the film. In these types of biopics there are always artistic choices made and the condensing of details to tell a story in a couple of hours. Everybody should prepare themselves for that and try to simply enjoy the film for manner in which it captures the spirit of Sinatra and his life, rather than the specific details. And in that, I think Scorcese will likely do a fine job. Also, knowing that Tina is producing the movie assures us that Frank will have an advocate in the process.

Casting will be a hard choice, but the music is easy. They should use Frank's original recordings and not try to have someone sing like him. You can have someone stand in to tell his story, but you can never replace "The Voice."

Sinatra The Movie

especially during this time of modern depression and crisis, the story of a young Sinatra making it on his own wings of belief and strength would be a a great role model for legions of generation "X" members.

as for the actor playing the part, i would not focus as much on likeness in appearance, rather than attitude. i think leo di caprio or johny depp would be brilliant, one of the young and crazy ones. that would create credibility and draw attention.

imagine that potential such a movie implies: the story of a young mans' struggle and climb to fame, interwoven with that music, as much part of the story as the protagonist himself, rather than just beeing an entertaining soundtrack, brought to cinematic light by one of the greatest directors.

i can almost "see" the streets of New York of another century, on the big silver screen, where the future of popular lifestyle was uncertain, and yet inmidst the process of beeing shaped by a young man namend ... SINATRA.

this could get very exciting.

Casting DiCaprio would be a mistake cause he does not look anything like young Frank even with the best makeup. I don't think Johnny Depp would be any better. Marty is a genius, and I am sure that he will choose the right one to play Frank. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone who could look like young Frank to be in the movie, but it's certainly not DiCaprio or Depp.

Jumping up and down...

When I read in the LA Times that Scorcese was directing a new "Sinatra" bio I literally jumped up and down at my desk. Had to contain myself.

I would like to see Harry Connick, Jr. play Frank Sinatra. He has similar features, he can sing and oh, can he act. He's played gangsters and lovers. Those blue eyes and New Orleans drawl always get me. Leo DiCaprio? Uh oh...No...Cant imagine him at all.

I wonder if authentic Sinatra vocals will be used. Imagine, a whole new generation learning about the incredible, indelible man and hearing that music in a surround movie theater. The music will give way to a whole new generation. It's a steller idea.

Thank you, Martin Scorcese!!!!!

Casting

How about Roger Lodge from "Blind Date". Something about him always reminds me of FS.

I can't imagine a film about FS that would not use his own recordings on the soundtrack.

The soundtrack will be Frank's original recordings for the new Sinatra movie, I can bet on it. For Marty's Dylan movie it was only Dylan's own recordings, for Marty's Stones movie it was only The Stones original recordings. I can't imagine Marty using anything else for the Sinatra movie, and Marty always uses the original recordings from the original artists for his movies, and with Tina on the scene, I cannot imagine it not being Frank's own recordings.

I believe Bruce is a major fan of Franks...leaving New Jersey to find fame in NYC with a signed pic of his hero Frank Sinatra. They have a few things common, both New Jersey boys.. although Bruce was born in Germany.. Bruce was an extra in "The First Deadly Sin" and Bruce's first movie in the "Die Hard" series I believe is based on the book "Nothing Lasts Forever" by Roderick Thorpe. It was a sequel to Franks' "The Detective".

We do need someone with charisma and a fun personality to play Frank....Frank had many layers, and these need to be portrayed in the film, the right actor to do this will be tough to find.

I too read somewhere that Johnny Depp would be a good choice...I dunno.
