Yeah, there were
several cigarette brands that marketed themselves with refreshing terms with their brand names("Kool" for example) and "Oasis" was one of them. Most other makes did the same with their ad copy. They successfully made the idea of selling stinking poisonous paper-wrapped leaves to people to stick in their mouths, set them on fire and inhale their fumes is a refreshing, attractive and even "kool" thing to do.
It kills millions of people every year in this country, but it makes billions of dollars for the tobacco industry, so that makes it okay. Of course, the people it has killed and is killing bought into such lunacy. Some of them bought Edsels, too. Yeah, I got off the track on my discographical information and I'd still like my question answered, but once I get get started on cigarettes... Ed S. |

No Club Oasis on this CD, but....
Hi Edwin,
here’s a track-by-track list with the info I compiled these days to keep with my own CD copy of „Classic Duets“. Other than relying on printed info, I’ve also checked the tracks with the original broadcasts of the TV shows in question. You’ll notice it's a working print - some questions are still to be answered (and hopefully will through input from the forum). 1. Birth of the Blues – with Louis Armstrong From „The Edsel Show“ (Ford Motor Company), broadcast Oct. 13, 1957 on CBS Prerecorded (date and location not documented) Arrangement by Heinie Beau, Orchestra conducted by Camarata 2. Nice Work If You Can Get It – with Peggy Lee From „The Frank Sinatra Show“ #4 (Chesterfield), broadcast Nov. 8, 1957 on ABC Prerecorded (date not documented) at The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood Arrangement by Nelson Riddle, Orchestra conducted by Nelson Riddle 6. Thanks, Bernhard
I thought you might come through with the data. Where did you get it? Does a listing of all his TV appearances exist?

Yes Ed, the list is in my computer
. I've tried to keep it up to date with various info and research published over the years (I have taken notes for the sources of each individual date but omitted those in my above list), the most recent being from the Sinatra Database CD-Rom, and if possible for me, I compared everything with watching the original shows that sometimes have additional info in the closing credits.Bernhard. |

Dissapointing
This album does not seem to have been released here in the UK I had to buy a US import. While the performances are great & FS sound full of fun the quality of the recordings is patchy to say the least! Yea I know the recordings are old but we've heard much better from much older sources. I also find the lack of information dissapointing , the notes from Nancy,Tina,& Frank Jr don't tells us anything-the whole thing seems a little thrown together. I always thought the other two Duet albums, in terms of artwork & notes felt like you were looking at them with closed eyes -they didn't feel Frank had much involvement in them & we know he didn't have any in this one, while I'm still glad to have it I have to ask why Frank never put stuff like this out years ago. Whatdoyerthink?? |

The responsibility belongs with the label
We supplied Capitol with all the information and they chose not to include it in the
booklet. If you write to them about it perhaps they will be more careful next time. << the notes from Nancy,Tina,& Frank Jr don't tells us anything >> Well, that's debatable and I resent the comment. Talking about Dad is still hard for us and I think all things considered, we did a good job. We answered the questions put to us and gave the project a sweetness and a sense of continuity. The details of the shows and performances were not asked of us, and, as I have said, the information was provided in writing prior to the release of the c.d. and the show. The booklet notes were taken from the live interviews. I'd like to see you who are so quick to criticize just try to do something as tough as this. Why are some people so damned critical? And why don't you take it up with the labels?

"Classic Duets" booklet
I thought the booklet was very informative, loving and very poinant. I believe I even cried a little upon reading it. Perhaps some forum members are just not as "attached or consumed" as some other members, and don't feel like an "almost part of the Sinatra family" as many of us do.
It's always easy to unjustly criticize. Compliments just don't seem to want to come out of folks mouths or keyboards. As I've said on numerous postings, "You have to walk a mile in those mocasins before you know the pain and torment". So friends, think FIRST before you write criticisms that you really know nothing about. Then re-read, edit, and perhaps even DELETE. None of us can possibly comprehend what the Sinatra family has gone thru, is going thru, and will go thru in the future. The death of a loved family member is tramatic enough, but having a father who is so loved and adored the world over has to be a difficult cross to bear to say the least. Nancy has shown the patience of of a Saint! I KNOW I would not be half as understanding if these complete strangers were critical of MY father or my words. I only mention Nancy as she is the forum administrator. Mrs. Sinatra, Tina and Frank Jr. should also be considered as well when we write on this forum. Just some advice from one who has been there. With age comes experience. My dear Papa always said: "Think before you speak, and look both ways before crossing the street!" I've always tried to do both in my sixty-five years! |

I had a nice holiday gift. A friend of mine, knowing I was a Sinatra enthusiast and that I didn't have access to PBS, surprised me by loaning me her video recording of the PBS show on the Classic Duets cd.
It was a wonderful show! Some highlights for me: Frank & Louie Armstrong dueting together -- you could tell Frank was having a swell time, he looked so loose and like he was greatly enjoying himself; the duet between the very lovely Shirley Jones (what a voice!) and Frank -- something different, but very lovely. Very touching when, at the conclusion of the song, he took both her hands in his and kissed them. Most moving was the ending when Frank sang "Put Your Dreams Away" and left the studio. Gave me chills. Very nice commentary by Frank Jr, Nancy & Tina -- it greatly added to the segments shown. A personal observation, and something I never noticed before. As I watched Tina's commentary thoughout, I kept wondering who DOES she remind me of???? She has a lovely dark, dramatic look to her. Finally, it hit me. She reminded me a bit of Cher -- it probably would have hit me sooner if she'd had long hair. I think it has something to do with those pretty brown eyes... . |
