Hi Nick, Got a note that Blue Moon was done with Nelson Ridle in 1960. Do you know of another recording?

Sinatra would have made a good job of these:

MOVE ON - Stephen Sondheim,

I HAPPEN TO LIKE NEW YORK - Cole Porter,

OLD FRIENDS - Stephen Sondheim,

AS IF WE NEVER SAID GOODBYE - Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Duncan.

Answers and a Question

Question first: could this thread be merged with Chuck Granata's "Songs He Never Sang"? Same topic.

To Nick: As Ed Potts and Lynda note on the earlier thread, Frank did record "Nature Boy" in April 1948, during the second musicians' strike of the decade. That's why he sings it a capella, accompanied by the Jeff Alexander Choir (singers were not considered musicians -- now THAT's funny!). It is included on the 4-CD "Best of Columbia" set.

To Kathy: Yes, "Beyond the Sea" sounds like a Sinatra swinger -- and that's no accident! Bobby Darin modeled his mature singing style ("Beyond the Sea," "Mack the Knife") directly after Sinatra -- so what do they say? Imitation remains the sincerest form of flattery. Both Darin and Sinatra recorded "Always" in the late '50s and I have trouble distinguishing between the two of them.

To John O: Sinatra sang "Tenderly" (and other songs never recorded, e.g., "S'Wonderful") on his radio program, "To Be Perfectly Frank" (aired 1954-55). Though never officially released, tapes do exist. Everyone who has heard this stuff (myself included) raves about it. How to get the tapes legitimately mastered and released? I haven't a clue.

To Lea: My father (a widower) has a female companion named Leatrice. Probably about your age. Not so common a name these days. Yes, Sinatra's rendition of "Blue Moon" is smashing. Great harmonies and improvisation. Don't recall who blows sax, but he's great, too! Joe Comfort on bass. Apparently pianist Bill Miller suggested the tune. Yes, it's the only time he recorded it. You'll enjoy the rest of "Swingin' Session" too -- a gasser, it moves, it rips! Plus a beautiful ballad in the middle, Harry Warren's "September in the Rain." So evocative, you can see those leaves of brown go tumblin' down...

To Mandy: Sinatra recorded "I'll Be Seeing You" three times. First with Tommy Dorsey in Feb 1940 -- one of his earliest recordings, in dance tempo, the boy singer doing the middle chorus -- then on his last album at Capitol, "Point of No Return" (1961), a beautiful ballad. Several months before "Point," he recorded his second Reprise album, "I Remember Tommy," with Sy Oliver. They put a swinging uptempo version of "Seeing You" on the album, which unfortunately I have yet to hear.
Someone else, please comment!

I can attest to the fact that the "I Remember Tommy" version of "I'll Be Seeing You", is fantastic. In fact, it's my favorite of the three. I especially like the few words that he says at the beginning of the song. Sometimes, hearing him speak allows me to forget that he's gone.

Morning

Hi Munch, Look forward to Swing' Sessions. Sounds great. The name Leatrice has a story and any one who shares my name has told me they were told the same story. Once upon a time there was a movie star named Leatrice Joy. Therefore many people in my age brackett were namedfor her. In the Jewish religon I was named for a great-grandmother, Leah. So you see it was short (rather a long) stretch to Leatrice. My middle name is Rita, but not after Rita Hayworth. Altho she was a beautiful lady, she was born bit after , I think. Ok, you must find out from the Leatrice you know, how she got her name.
"Blue Moon you knew just what I was there for"

oh, cool dunc!
one of my favourite judy garland numbers. in fact the whole medley she does with vic damone.

i was surprised when sinatra sang a line from "Maria" on the new rat pack CD. i really wish he had done the west side story tracks.
wasn't "lonely town" a bernstein tune he recorded?

if i never sing another song

originally called "illusionen", a song composed by german speaking udo juergens (from austria), performed in german language by both, juergens, and dark voiced singer alexandra who died in 1969.

translated for shirley bassey i believe, and then sung by "british sinatra" matt monroe.
a beautiful dramatic melody about a man facing some kind of end.

sammy davis also sang an udo juergens song, this could be the one.

I would have liked Frank to have sung some of Etta James Songs. Some of her music has been use in movies and movies on Televison. I would have liked Frank to sing-AT LAST MY LOVE HAS COME A LONG,ALSO SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE, AND ONLY TIME WILL TELL. Frank could sing anything. Frank could take a song and make MAGIC. Thanks and God Bless. Larry

Songs You Wish Sinatra Had Recorded

Hi Larry: Wow! "AT LAST" and "SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE", now that's class !!....I've always loved those songs and my Mother even had "SUNDAY KIND OF LOVE" on her lips most of the time....She was born in Kentucky, as well...Magoffin(SP?) county in 1908......I can't even believe Frank's advisors overlooked those perfectly beautiful songs.....Let alone, "TO EACH HIS OWN"....Oh, well, the list goes on, thanks, DOUG OF GREENVILLE, OHIO -USA - Darke County, a remote outpost somewhere in the obscure regions of western Ohio.....Sunday morning, windy and cold(just plain nasty...25 degrees) at 0946 hrs(EST), March 10, 2002....

WHERE'S ED or EL ED of Joisey Shores.....?????

I'VE BEEN TO TOWN and "IT WORRIES ME"......Bye, bye....

The shadow of your smile - studio

I know Tony Bennett's version is 2nd to none and I know Frank did a live version.

But I could hear a great version either with a chart Nelson along the lines of MOONTLIGHT SINATRA or by Costa ...perhaps a chart along the lines of Didn't We or All my tomorrows.

I think I can almost hear it now.
