It still bothers me that my entries were so lacking in information. Most of them were taken from Dad's itineraries so there wasn't much to report.

AUGUST 8, 1963: Booked into the Sands in Las Vegas, Dad was summoned to a meeting with the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Commissioner Ed Olsen told him the FBI had evidence that Sam Giancana had visited the Cal-Neva Lodge. Dad admitted that he'd run into Giancana when Sam was leaving Phyllis McGuire's cabin at the Cal-Neva, but that he had not invited Giancana to the lodge. Warned of the consequences, he agreed informally not to see Giancana in Nevada but insisted on his right to associate freely with anyone outside the state.
GUILT BY ASSOCIATION: Has Frank Sinatra been with Mob guys? Sure. "I've worked for organized crime figures all my life," he told me. "In nightclubs. In Vegas. Me and everybody else." Ask Dean Martin, ask Jerry Lewis, ask anyone who played the saloons and clubs when Dad was coming up. He knew the old wardheelers, too. Many of the bootleggers, men who ran the speakeasies during Prohibition, had remained in the nightclub business after drinking became legal. And many had remained linked with people who operated outside the law, in big and small cities across America, including Vegas and Reno in Nevada, when the action moved there. I'd known these people all my life. I've sat with them talking about their families, their wives and their kids and their grandchildren. Then I'd hear their names in the news and I'd say to myself, "Oh, my God. This one's under investigation for tax evasion." Or, "That one's just been questioned in a murder." Most of the guys we knew personally were Italian, but many of the crime figures I'd read about were of other ethnic backgrounds. Put a vowel at the end of a performer's name, though, and there's a suspicion that he's part of the criminal element. And because Frank Sinatra has been king of the hill among Italian performers, he's been targeted more than anyone else by this kind of discrimination.

I hate that all of my friends when they think of Sinatra, they think of a mobster, it just seems the opposite of who he really is from my reading about him. I get a lot of jokes about being in the mob because of my last name (Cappelletti)

JULY 31-AUGUST 10, 1978: Sarah Vaughan and Frank co-headlined at L.A.'s Universal Amphitheater.

AUGUST 9, 1956: Back at MGM, Dad starred with Bing Crosby, by now a great friend, in the musical comedy High Society, John Patrick's adaptation of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story with a swell Cole Porter score that was recorded and released as an incredible soundtrack album. The Bing-Frank duet "Well, Did You Evah?" was the highlight of the movie. On the set, Frank was nicknamed "Dexedrine" because of his high energy level and Bing was nicknamed "Nembutal" because of his laid-back approach. It was also the beginning of a close friendship between FS and their costar, the regal Grace Kelly, whom he affectionately called "Gracie."
FRANK ON BING: He was the father of my career, the idol of my youth—and the dear, dear friend of my maturity.

BING CROSBY ON FRANK: A talent like that comes along once in a lifetime. Why in my lifetime?

GRACE KELLY ON SINATRA: I'd always longed to do a musical and, of course, working with Bing and Frank was simply marvelous. They create a certain excitement and are two very stong personalities. So it was fascinating for me to be in the middle—watching the tennis match go back and forth from one to the other with tremendous wit and humor—each one trying to outdo the other... Frank and I did two numbers. He has an endearing sweetness and charm.

Nancy, the online version of your book has that caption under the photo, so I just copied it.

Maybe the photo came from some White House archive?

AUGUST 11-24, 1951: He headlined at Reno's Riverside Inn and Casino. It was his very first appearance at a casino in the state of Nevada.

AUGUST 11, 1943: Traveling by train to Los Angeles, Dad tried to avoid the waiting crowds by deboarding in Pasadena, but it was no use: A huge throng of bobbysoxers mobbed the station, and he was rushed by police to the safety of a nearby garage. "They converged on our car and practically picked it up," Dad recalls. There must have been 5,000 kids mashed against the car. It was exciting, but it scares the wits out of you, too."

AUGUST 12, 1986: He did a benefit at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles for Mexico's homeless earthquake victims. Placido Domingo was master of ceremonies.

AUGUST 12, 1968: In Hollywood, Dad shared the microphone with Tina, Frankie, the Jimmy Joyce Singers and me for the holiday album The Sinatra Family Wish You a Merry Christmas. Tina was scared, "in a coma," as she approached the mike for her solos. Dad joked, "You got one take, kid." We did "The Twelve Days of Christmas" as reworded by Sammy Cahn, "The Bells of Christmas," "The Christmas Waltz" and "It's Such a Lonely Time of Year," which was an anti-war song.

The cover photo of our family Christmas
album.
AUGUST 12, 1956: After a reception for Eleanor Roosevelt in Chicago, Dad sang the National Anthem at the Democratic Convention that nominated Adlai Stevenson. He was watching the convention with members of the Kennedy family when Stevenson locked up the nomination. The instant the '56 ticket was determined, he remembered Bobby Kennedy saying, "OK, that's it. Now we go to work for the next one." For the 1960 presidential election. Four years later. Not a minute to waste. Frank Sinatra was impressed.

FRANK SINATRA, JR.: "I've studied with Frank Sinatra," says Frank Jr., "although he doesn't know I've studied with him. I've been following him around all my life." Asked what kind of advice he would give his son about the press, FS answered, "The press? This will get laughs, but I mean it. Be honest and courteous and hope the press reciprocates. I don't mean the entertainer should be subservient, but he should be frank and square. He'll need members of the press all his life. All of us do. In spite of my so-called problems, I've had a damned good press. Frankie should trust individual members until he finds that he can't."
