The Lamplighter's Serenade from Frank's first solo recording session. Always liked that song.

Also, the whole Tone Poems Of Color album. Not one that gets a lot of attention.

I say Lesser known to whom? To the public at large, these days, almost everything by Frank Sinatra is lesser known if it isn't My Way; Strangers In The Night or New York, New York or perhaps just maybe "Come Fly With Me" or "Fly Me To The Moon"
As for myself, well it would be hard, no impossible, to choose. My favourite songs are strewn far and wide across the recordings from the RCA, Columbia, Capitol and Reprise years. Choosing one would be to deny so many others.

If, however, I were to suggest a song that I would imagine is not so often played but should be. I would refer you to the amazing "With Every Breath I Take" from the 'Close To You' album. A fantastic song and brilliantly sung.

Would A Long Night be considered "lesser known"? I am always amazed when I listen to that track, it sounds like it is 30 years older than the rest of the album "She Shot Me Down" -- Frank's vocal is incredible, and Jenkins' arrangement is hauntingly good. This track would have been right at home on any Sinatra "saloon" album from the Capitol years. I would venture to say most have probably never heard it, since it can only be found on this one album that now seems to be out of print.

Thanks Nick, that's very good to know! I have the Reprise CD issued sometime in the 90's and it suffers from poor sound quality - tons of echo on certain tracks. If you have this reissue, can you tell me if it has been remastered at all? I will order it promptly if so.

The first edition of the new UMG CD used the masters from The Complete Reprise Recordings box set and contained the longer, alternate take of Hey Look, No Crying. UMG did correct their mistake by issuing an updated version that includes the correct take of Hey Look, No Crying and a very good remaster that's never been released until now. The only problem is both versions are out there for sale and their packaging is the same, you have to play the actual CD to tell them apart. So, it's not certain which one you'll receive.

And I agree, A Long Night is my favorite track on the album.

I think most of the stock has gone of the "long" version, I've bought 3 or 4 copies of this recently to give to friends and all have been with the short version, and new mastering. So fingers crossed. Prob advisable to buy it from Europe though, the recall may not have had effect in the US on the Amazon imports.

I ordered from Amazon UK and got the revised CD. But I've read other posts from people who ordered it after I did and they still got the original CD with the longer take. That was a few month ago, so maybe those first CDs are out of stock by now.

Yikes! I may go ahead and check to see if I can just download the newest version, instead of taking a chance on the cd and ending up with the wrong one. I don't usually download Sinatra material (prefer to have the liner notes and actual disc), but since I have the Reprise release already, I may make an exception this time.

Thanks for all of the info, the link to that other thread was great as well, I read the entire thing and learned a lot about this album.

I've seen only one report by someone who received the wrong first version (of the new She Shot Me Down), and many reports by those who have received the corrected revision lately. I think it's a safe bet that the earlier CDs are out of the pipeline by now. To protect yourself, you might first ask the supplier about return and exchange privileges in the event the wrong disc is received.

If you download, there is no guarantee you will receive the new 20-bit remastering anyway. FWIW, there are no liner notes—just a single folded page with song titles and original LP credits. That's exactly the same as the original Reprise CD issue.

BTW, the echo is part of the original album mix and was intentional. Some believe strongly that it adds to the atmosphere and is not an indication of poor sound quality. It's not gone from the latest remastering, which is somewhat truer to the LP than the earlier Reprise CD remasters.

Hopefully one can assume that the remastered version with the shorter "hey look.." will be in the new box.

Back on the album..., I was always liked Good Thing Going and Thanks for the Memory, specifically the part that goes "...gone are those evenings on Broadway..together we go to great show" the orchestra at the point really sounds wonderful.

I still have this album on LP, and Bob is (as usual) totally correct. I do remember that when I bought it that I was somewhat suspicious that Reprise engineers were trying to bolster Frank's aging voice with the echo, but after repeated listenings I gave up on that false assumption. And I do agree that it's lesser known.

Thanks for all the info. I never really thought about the echo being done on purpose, but you are right, it does add to the overall feel of the album.
