Yeah, Bernhard - surely the best argument for replacing one's video's by DVD's (so far as there are ones), and it has many more advantages over the non-durable and sensitive VHS videos. One thing that I find particularly good about digital video is that you either can play the movie in his full quality - or not at all. It doesn't go down in quality over the years.

Kind regards,

Andreas

Hi Melissa,

I first heard it on the "Vegas sampler" Lucky Numbers which includes the 1963 studio version. This one is a little slower than the (great!) film version you can find in the Hollywood box.

Anyway, a smashing song indeed!

"In civilized jungles... the females adore... the lions who come on swingin'..." Guess you agree to that? (LOL)

Kind regards,

Andreas

<< I never heard of that cd >>

Right here in Frank's Recordings: Lucky Numbers

Probably easier to find than the other two out-of-print CDs containing the Reprise studio (single) version of "Come Blow Your Horn":

Hi Melissa,

***I never knew Frank recorded a slow version of " Come blow your horn"wow learn something new everyday?!***

oh it's not really slow, also a swinger, just the beat is slower & Sinatra sings it more "measured". I liked the song from the beginning, but since I know the film version I listen to that one most of the time.

"Softly" - good taste! It's really a fine record, of course no "real" album, but a nice compilation that I love listening to. Some songs are a little poorer than others on it, some are kinda strange ("Pass Me By" ) and some are fantastic, like "Here's To The Losers", "AVailable", "The Look Of Love". Truly sad it isn't in print anymore.

Kind regards

Andreas

Hey Andreas!

Yes I really wish that cd comes back into print so many great songs on it. I love " Here's to the losers" and " softly as I leave you", "available", " I can't believe I'm losing you" and " the look of love" as well.

The only songs on the album I have never heard are:

Dear Heart
Love isn't for the young
pass me by
talk to me baby

By the way I am a bit confused which version of come blow your horn is on the cd " softly as I leave you"? The film version or the slower studio version?

Hi Melissa,

now I was confused too... I totally forgot that "Come Blow Your Horn" is on the "Softly" album too. And it is of course the (slower swingin', lol) studio version.

Kind regards

Andreas

Thanks for sorting out that 'confusion'.

I do have to say that the "Come blow your horn" from the " softly as I leave you" album is excellent and I really love it. The movie version of the song is not the very best, but it works well in the movie. The studio recorded version definitely has the edge.

There is a warmth of character that comes out in the movie and for me the whole film is a joyful experience. I have it on VHS although I have not seen it in a while, but I stand with all the others here who hope that a DVD release in full widescreen will follow soon with as many extras as can be found.

There is a lack of Sinatra movie DVD's available on release in the UK and there is certainly room for a quality Sinatra movie DVD box set.

BTW I would like to see the following Sinatra movies also available here in the UK on DVD:-

Come Blow Your Horn
Can Can
Some Came Running
Kings Go Forth
Meet Danny Wilson
Anchors Aweigh
Take Me Out To The Ballgame
On The Town
Serjeants Three
Jonny Concho
The Naked Runner
The Devil at 4 O'clock (This was available but I cannot find it now)
Never So Few (This is avalailable but only as part of a Steve McQueen Box set)

Yes, of course it is a typical movie version, and I think I like it so much because I knew the studio version already. I like the song plus the energetic spirit of the film recording. And: Maybe it is because the rather bad sound quality of that version gives some "vintage flair" to it.

Nevertheless, there are songs from which I love the film version really more than the studio recording and find it definitely better, like "The Tender Trap". Frank's phrasing is georgeous in that version! Of course the string arrangement is full of "loud sweetness", but I just like it. To say nothing of the movie itself...!

Kind regards,

Andreas

Hi Julie, thanks, but I would not be interested in asian DVD's as I believe they are not all authorised and they are not all playable in the UK Region 2 format, which I prefer to buy over here. Of course I do have several official US Region 1 disks and they are all of very good quality, if not playable on all my DVD players.

For myself, when I refer to a 'DVD', I mean an officially released DVD with all the English menus and extras and subtitles etc. I am not aware that many of the titles I mentioned are available in the UK and some are also not even available in the US.

Andreas, I understand what you are saying and there are occasions I do agree with you that many times the film version of a song which is recorded in studion just for the movie can be wonderful, but as a general rule I find that the recording studio version of a particular song is often the best because there FS is free to use his own artistic license and quality control - whereas on a movie studio sound stage it is often the case that director chooses the arranger and orchestra and the recording is made to fit into a scene or it has to be sung just as the Director wanted it done for the movie.

Just as an example, if you listen to the recording of "You're Sensational" from the movie of "High Society" and then listen to the Capitol studio Recording of that same song with Nelson Riddle, it is my view the Capitol studio recording is vastly superior.

Congratulations to Neil Simon for receiving the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Award. No one deserved the honor more than Mr. Simon.

I don't think Neil Simon considered "Come Blow Your Horn" his finest work but I was it for the first time tonight on TMC and found myself enjoying it. It had some funny stuff in it that made me laugh; the mother answering the phone and telling the husband of the girl Frank character was dating which hotel his wife was really staying at... Hoss of Bonanza (Dan Block) was there waiting for Frank.

And Lee J. Cobb's character owning a company that owns wax fruit...
