Great
I think that this was one of Frank's Best role it was less like watching a movie it was more like seeing someone of the street and following their day. Very real wish Frank was in more roles like that.

Deadly Sin
This was a neat film...I enjoyed the book first by Lawrence Sanders...Frank played Delaney to the hilt..I also thought he was magnificent in "The Detective." That 1968 movie had a marvelous cast with wonderful character actors such as Lloyd Bochner, Simon Oakland, Hal Freeman, Wm. Windom, Jack Klugman, Horace McMahon, etc. And Jackie Bissett was a "gas." Of course, Lee Remick was not bad either. But Frank was the quintessential NYC cop.

Am I mistaken or was FS in fact known as Police Sergeant Edward X Delaney - or was his rank higher?
In any event, this is a very good movie for FS's great low key performance. You feel that he is just so natural and warm as a person and that he seems to be playing himself - save that he is also a character in the film. It is certainly Sinatra's film. The movie can, however, be a little sad and depressing but I do enjoy it and I have watched it many times. I really like The Detective also.

The First Deadly Sin 1980
I have this on DVD also and have to agree with Lux and our Gassergirl. Its a good movie, very stirring and intreging story. I like him playing NY cops. I love The Detective too, one of my favorites.
No doubt his singing is the best in the world, but he was a great actor also. Charlie Keep HIS music playing, and sleep warm

Phew!
Luckily I have found my copy! Was just about to order another.
I have to admit I put this on on Saturday evening but had to stop it, I wasn't in the right frame of mind at all, after the news of Ken Bigley's death I was feeling, obviously, very distressed and it wasn't a good choice of film, so rather than not do it justice, I took it off and I am going to watch it all through from the beginning later in the week. What I did see though, looked excellent, very atmospheric - what a great actor Sinatra was! I will look forward to seeing this properly.

First Deadly Sin
I have just finished watching this film, I really enjoyed it although it was quite creepy, definitely dark and I agree with Phil, very cheerless, but how could it be otherwise when you consider the subject matter?. Frank's portrayal of Sgt Delaney was superb, no doubting Frank's abilities as an actor, I agree with Jeffrey in that you get the feeling Frank was being himself, very natural, warm, gentle and protective. The Captain needed a slap though! How dare he treat Frank like that
Good performances all round, definitely one to recommend.

How did this movie do in the box office when it first came out?
I did a little bit of research on Lawrence Sanders, heres what I came up with: He wrote a series of "Sin" books: The First Deadly Sin, The Second Deadly Sin, The Third Deadly Sin, & The Fourth Deadly Sin. Most often the first and third books are regarded as his best works. There are seven deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed, and sloth. However Sanders only wrote about the first four. I assume the movie version of "The First Deadly Sin" had to do with "Pride" too. Were there ever plans to do a sequel to this movie based on the second book with Frank? Looking back it could have made a great series of crime/detective movies. btw I love this movie and the music. It's hauntingly beautiful.

I love this film as well, James, but I don't see the connection w/"Pride", do you? Other than the pride of the tracking of the killer. Interesting view!
Also never understood what "sloth" was other than a three-toed one! Thanks for posting the Seven Deadly Sins--they certainly cover most everything, don't they? It would have been great to have the other six in films and have Mr. S. star in all of them.

<<have Mr. S. star in all of them.>>
That would have been wonderfrul I always wondered what would have happened if Frank played in the Dirty Harry films.

Sinatra had been the main choice for the first 'Dirty Harry' flic, after John Wayne turned down the part, but FS had to turn down the part because of his due hand/finger surgery in 1970. Below some promo produced for starters. Sinatra spoke out about this in an interview with Paul Compton (for KGIL) on June 5, 1970.

Gee this is a new one to me....I had no idea he was the one sought for Dirty Harry...I loved First Deadly Sin...great cop movie with emotion...The other cop movie I love is the Detective which I think was very ahead of its time in the late 60's and dealt with gay issues....Amy

Dirty Harry
I also read somewhere that Sinatra thought the language in this film was too raw.
I think Frank's performance in Deadly Sin is excellent. Although the movie isn't quite true to the book, it's a powerful story. Emily |

When I saw the CSI episode with the ex-showgirl (Faye Dunaway) and Frank Sinatra relationship, I knew there was some kind of connection. It was this movie! I MUST have it!!!
![]() P.S. I never realized they made a movie together. Last edited by Roy; 02-14-2006 at 04:42 PM. |

Big chase scene
In the book, the end was a big chase scene in cars heading upstate that was a helluva climax. In the movie, they ended it very differently. He was a captain in the novels, a sergeant in the one movie about the character (Francis X. Delaney).
He also made outrageous sandwiches that he could only eat over the sink. I forget the ingredients, but they were marvelous. Bruce Willis was an extra barely visible in a bar scene. Ed Spiegel Last edited by Edwin; 02-14-2006 at 07:27 PM. |

I wonder if anyone can tell me if Frank did much promotional work for The First Deadly Sin and whether, or not, he was fond of the end result?
