Chez Joey

After all this fuss about the Lady and the Kid, I just had to watch Pal Joey again, which I haven't seen in years. Each of them, Rita and Kim, surely had their very own charms as well as class and our Pal Joey is simply adorable, anyway. I have to agree with my sweet Mr. Rat, though, that the film moves slowly for most of the part. However, just an opinion and no fighting needed nor requested.

Pal Joey 1957

Hey Lux, your right us Viking Gals have to stick togather. I loved the pictures you posted of Kim Novak, and Rita.

My husband loves Kim, says I look like her, (as much as I love him he needs new glasses)

Don't understand how anyone can not love this movie, everything about it is terrific, sure at time it maybe simple, but 1957 was a much simplier time and place. The music, arrangements, the acting its all so good. Well I really don't care, it will always be one of my favorites.

YOU ASKED-I SHALL REPLY. . .

tell me about Kim in this movie and why you liked her performance?
Simple, she was an innocent country girl, built like a "brick ship yard" (old Country expressions) and she played Joey like a violin! She was sweet, tender, loving, innocent, not-overly intelligent but her feelings came thru loud and clear when the scene called for it. Her "I don't care" attitude doing the strip was wonderful!

So THAT'S why I like Kim in this movie! Personal taste, I assume. Also know that Mr. S. was outstanding! It is still one of the best "music" movies he ever made, bar none!

IMHO, of course!!! Oh, and Char, we could do a duet, you as the young Kim and myself as the more "mature" one! We could perform at the Lounge on NYE!!! Second thought, better not!

Regards, Lux

Pal Joey

Pal Joey is one of my favourite Sinatra movies, and indeed I'd say that it's in my top 10 movies of all time. I simply adore it!

Kim Novak is adorable in this flick, and while I don't think Rita Hayworth could touch her on looks, we can see that Joey is attracted to more than just her looks (her M-U-N-Y for starters!).

As for the songs, I much prefer the recording of The Lady Is A Tramp here to the Capitol single take, it has so much more vibrancy.

I never had a problem with the pace of the movie, I'd be happy to continue watching for another hour beyond the credits if I could.

GREAT LINE, ALAN!

And we'd all be there with you!

When Joey "kicks" the upright during "The Lady is a Tramp" is so typical Francis. I'll bet he put that in there w/o any direction! That's one of the many, many instances showing why he was so perfect!

I thought Rita was much older, as to me, she certainly looked like it. As an expression around here says "looks like she was rode hard and put away wet!" Still a beautiful lady, none-the-less!

Can't wait to see it for the twenty-first time!

Alan, will you please perform that tune at the NYE party at the Lounge? I'll bet you'd be a smash!

HEY lux, I'm afraid we'd have to be two ole broads on New Years Eve. But I'm game if you are.

Still one of the best Sinatra films ever, I'd be glad to sit thru another hour. Charlie

Didn't mean Broads as anything bad!!

I WISH THAT WE WERE THERE TOGATHER!!!!

ALAN. . .

FANTASTICO!!!

Dr. Paolo will be playing the baby grand, and would you be so kind as to post your reply on the Lounge thread so all the guests know you'll be there. Russ will be delighted as well!

Well, Char, I guess two ole broads are better than no broads at all! I think I'll let you do solo of "Bewitched" dressed like Rita! I'll even loan you my fancy gown (dig it on the Lounge thread!) Or see if we can find you a "Zip" gown and you could do that routine! That would be a hoot!!!

Let me know! And thanks, Alan. We're looking forward to your rendition!

Fondly,

Lux

Frank's singing in Pal Joey? It doesn't get better than this. I wish there was another 20 musicals out there as terrible as this. I love the pictures!

Still my ...

favorite Sinatra movie!

The music, the nightclub environment, boardinghouse life, the dog, San Francisco, the improbable story ( bad boy reforms and accepts the love of the sweet girl - never seems to happen in real life!)

Frank's face in close-up when Kim starts to strip - those blue eyes, hurt, sad...

I rented Guys and Dolls, On the Town and Pal Joey this week. I liked the first two, I thought they were both good, and had their moments, but Pal Joey was really good.
It's the only one of the three that I know I'll rent again. Sinatra's character is totally cool, and Kim Novack is a babe.
There's not enough songs by our man Frank though.

Pal Joey

When I was growing up, I think this and Meet Danny Wilson (though far from a critical success) were my favorites because they permitted me the illusion of viewing Frank in a cabaret setting - and boy, that's what I wanted to do.

You must remember there were no DVDs of concerts then, or even the movies! I was thrilled to catch them as reruns on the late show.

Rita and Kim Singing?

I get the feeling that Rita's and Kim's singing was dubbed in. Anybody know for sure?

Answering My Own Question

Just looked it up. Rita Hayworth's singing was dubbed in by Jo Ann Greer and Kim Novak's singing was dubbed in by Trudy Ewen.

Correct, Gary, and a darn good job they did, too. I thought Kim's was perfect!

My #1 choice of favs, w/close ties to "Young at Heart" and "High Society."
