Coming to Broadway

I saw in the NY Times today that they are mounting a broadway version of Robin and the 7 Hoods with all the Cahn/Van Heusen songs plus Come Fly With Me and Call Me Irresponsible.

I read the same article. Hard to predict what will happen. It'll be either a huge hit or the biggest bomb since Hiroshima. In any event, whomever they cast in the principal roles will have some VERY big shoes to try and fill.

Yep. Pity the fellow who will find himself compared to Mr Sinatra! It really is a fun concept and story. I think it will be a hit...like The Producers.

Let's hope, and not a flop like Young Frankenstein.

If he were still alive, I know who would be perfect to play Big Jim: Jerry Orbach, RIP. 30 years ago, he would've made a good Robbo.

Don't know why people call "Young Frankenstein" a flop - saw it last week - theater was PACKED and people were buying tickets at the box office for future shows...

Now back to our regularly scheduled thread...

OK let's hear it. Who do you think should play the Robbo role (and other roles) on Broadway?

wow- i new that a broadway musical of robin and the seven hoods
would be a great idea- didnt i mention it in this thread earlier

i hope perhaps a few new songs might be written but i dont think
come fly with me would make sense in the broadway show- I dont think passenger airline service was in existance during the time of the shows setting- i think come blow you horn would make sense in the
show perhaps from the Allan A Dale character when he gets Robbo
to form his charity organization and he says as the lead " I tell you chum is time to come blow your horn" and than starts singing the song. I think call me irresponsible would work great in the show as robbo is describing his love for marion

maybe aint that a kick in the head would work when the Dean martin role is shot down by marion

even two other songs might work in the show- when after the club robbo runs is destroyed robbo goes to the clubs designer for mob hit proof club and the designer begs for a chance to try again and confesses that "everybody has the right to be wrong , at least once
when guy gisborn destroys the first club

and perhaps marion could sing to one of the men- teach me tonight

i think the show will be great and perhaps a few of my ideas may make it into the broadway score
I can dream cant I

How about having our own Ed Potts play Alvin Potts? He's already used to the last name.

And since I Like To Lead When I Dance wasn't used in the film, maybe the Broadway version can restore the song to the story.

I think this could do ok on Broadway. You have a pretty good base of songs and lots of other VanHeusen and Cahn songs to add to it (How about "Call Me Irresponsible"?) And if it comes off as something of a Sinatra or Rat Pack tribute, that would be ok too.

Robin and the 7 Hoods

My friend had the Record LP of this film in the 60's and I would hear it
while over at his house. I really love the overture, it's a brilliant
arrangement by Nelson. I was surprised when I saw that it wasn't in the film. I'm wondering if it was played at all in the theatres
as a pre-show opening with a blank screen, as was done with some
widescreen films (even though this wasn't widescreen.)

Dean,

I enjoy the images you've been posting to this forum. They are great.

Last night I kicked my kids off to bed. The littlest one was watching the muppets version of Wizard of Oz and I couldn't tolerate it. I agreed to tape it for them and the only way I could do this was to put on a DVD (we only have one tv). I selected Robin and the 7 Hoods. Every one in my family has always loved this film. Alas my wife doesn't get it. She could do without the whole affair. Can this marriage be saved?

Love & Marriage

Ha!
Well my wife & 4 year old son love Dean Martin (as do I, my mother named me after him), so I just put on a DVD with both Frank & Dean in it and we all win. This movie I remember watching one Saturday afternoon in my Nana's Californian Bungalow when I was about 8, lying on the loungeroom floor on my tummy. Whenever I visit her there now (she's 92) the whole house just feels so happy because of those sort of memories, my late Pa was a big Bing fan and he'd play me albums out in the pool room. Good days.

I have the whole album on Gold disc and I guess I will play it later.

And I bought the gold disc in my kind of town Chicago.
