I have only watched the first ten minutes or so of this film on the newly-released DVD. I want to save it for a special occasion when I can sit down and watch it properly. Pity it's so far off Christmas - but I can't wait that long (Although, Frank fans are able to hear sleigh bells ringing 'ser-mack in the middle of May!).

To me, the picture seems to be a quantum leap over anything which has appeared on video/DVD before so I think they must have gone back to the original print. My sound system isn't wonderful for DVD but that seems to be mightily improved too. I certainly recommend this release.

great movie

In an old thread out here somewhere I made a point of saying I loved the look of the phoney neighborhood. My Grandmother, (God RHS), lived in a lovely area that looked like that in the late 1950s.

The movie is great. The cast is great. Hope the new DVD is clear and the color is nice.

Anyone care to go clam digging.

I just watched Young at Heart tonight, and I loved it. The story was a little mellow dramatic, but the music was fantastic.
Frank sitting at the piano singing "Just One of Those Things" was pure magic.
And "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "One For My Baby" too.

Wow all I can say is I'm knocked out how everyday I become a bigger and bigger fan.

The anticipation of his entrance into the picture (cause it's quite a few minutes in) alone, made me almost as giddy as a teenage bobbysoxer when he finally arrives on that doorstep.

I thought, glad I'm not watching with my wife, she'd be laughing at me.

too funny.

Now, Bob, you know what we all were talking about! I watch it at least once a month, without fail.

Why, oh why, didn't Doris and Francis make more beautiful music together? Such a shame!

Great music, great chemistry...

between Frank Sinatra and Doris Day. (Not to mention the chemistry between FS and Ethel Barrymore) I love the scene in the kitchen and that "friendly kiss." Note how the camera captured Sinatra's eyes afterward. Doris Day acted with her eyes; likewise FS. During their last song together, you can even see him flirting with her (FS himself, not his character).

Quote:
The piano accompaniment, I am guessing, comes from Bill Miller.
Andre Previn did the piano work throughout. Marvelous.

FS and Doris Day made a delightful recording together at Columbia: Irving Berlin's "Let's Take an Old-Fashioned Walk." (1949) Charming and sweet. Probably my favorite FS duet.

MUNCH, YOU'RE RIGHT. . .

Forgot about "Old Fashioned Walk". Just wish they had recorded "You, My Love" other than just having it on the "Sinatra in Hollywood" set.

Yes, he was flirting, no doubt. I think about that scene, and the chills still run up my spine!!! Love this film and that duo!

Good Luck, and incidently, would U be so kind as to not type all in caps? It's like you're screaming at us, and we know you're not!

Let us know if and when you order it.

You guys are all right about "Young at Heart"...Great movie, mainly because of the music and the chemistry between FS and Doris Day... I think the reason people like this movie is obvious...

First of all, you have to be a Sinatra fan.. (of course)..But in this particular movie FS is probably at the peak of his powers as far as voice, technique, and delivery of a saloon song...Speaking of which "One for my Baby"..Just a great number sung in the only atmosphere that matters...A saloon. Great songs, a talented cast of characters, and the type of movie that makes you feel good when it ends with the two of them at the piano...

Gotta love the whole enchilada !!!

Young at Heart, 1955

You can love this movie or you can knock it, I don't care I love it. Frank and Doris togather are great. And the songs, "Someone to Watch Over Me" it doesn't get any better.

And when he and Doris sing "You My Love" tears flow the film maybe outdated but I watch it every chance I get. To me its a definate WINNER!!!

Young at Heart

Watched this AGAIN last night...
Even though Doris Day has a really bad haircut and the ending (which Frank changed himself) is very cliche'd.

What a film!

Frank sitting at the Piano singing "It was just one of those things".... ahhh, makes my hair stand on end every time.

This is one of my all time Favorites. And Lux, like you love the duet with Frank and Doris "You My Love" So Good!!

Maybe it appears corney now, but God I love it. makes, me laugh and cry too. Its worth it just to hear the movie. I swear I could repeat the dialogue word for word, have seen it so much.
I'd love to open my door and see Barney Sloan standing their.
Be still my Heart!!

If I had to be on a island all by myself, I'd make sure I had this movie with me, also Pal Joey, The Detective and all my Sinatra cd's I could die a happy camper.

André Previn?

Film credits claim André Previn played the piano solos for Frank's numbers in Young At Heart.

The book in the 6-CD box set, Frank Sinatra In Hollywood [1940-1964], says it's Bill Miller doing the honors.

Both opinions have been stated earlier in this thread. Anyone know the real scoop? Chuck Granata?

Bill Miller is the one listed in the recording session documents for playing the piano. I suppose it was by some contract agreed upon that Prévin would get the official movie credits - perhaps a bit comparable to Miller also doing most of the actual piano playing on the tracks on the Reprise album** with Count Basie.

Bernhard.

PS/Added: ** I wrote "albums" by typo, I was referring to the first one (1962).
