I would agree with that and my wish is that Chuck will make a speedy full recovery and then get at it.

Thinking about it, assuming that Chuck's people could offer a noticeable improvement on the sound, perhaps now there should, after all, be a comprehensive and chronological Capitol Sinatra Box Set offering the highest possible quality sound (still keeping all the concept albums together as conceived but nevertheless adding in at the end any additional tracks that were recorded at the time and did not make the album and also any completed alternate takes also) but it would in all fairness also have to include all the released and unreleased original and alternate studio takes, which is only fair, since many people who would be expected to buy the set would most likely already have the original albums in cd and other forms.

The recording itself is fantastic sounding, but that old stereo mix is terrible, IMO. I don't know what they were thinking when they "reduced" it to 2-track.

"Here's That Rainy Day"

See the following post in the thread for the album No One Cares, for details of an interesting variation in this particular song of the box set: "Here's That Rainy Day".

I thought I mentioned it before, but don't see it earlier in the thread. "I've Heard That Song Before" on here seems to be the unedited take, while the releases on Come Swing With Me! have an intercut on the "it's funny how a dream..." line that comes before the last instrumental break in the song. The Capitol Singles 4 CD box has this unedited version as well - to my ear, this song on there seems to be drawn from The Capitol Years digital master, but tweaked some.

Very interesting, Martin. After listening to both versions from Come Swing With Me and The Capitol Years... I can hear the difference between the two at the intercut. Yet another discovery.

I still very much like the long version of TLABL which features glorious singing. Apart from the All the Way album, I have this track on another Capitol Records (World Record Club Series) set that I have had for nearly 40 years called "The Sinatra Touch." The short version I agree sounds great on the Hollywood set and also on The Capitol Years and The Singles sets.

It's the Same Old Dream

The track listing at the top of this thread indicates that "It's the Same Old Dream" is an alternate take which can also be found on The Select Sammy Cahn. How does this take differ from the other version(s)?

The track listing is incorrect or misleading. Only one take has ever been released. What's special about the version on this CD is that it was the first issue of a STEREO mix. The original version from the LP This Is Sinatra, Volume Two was mono.

See also The Complete Capitol Singles Collection post #109 for a related discussion of other songs from the same album.

I don't often play this 3CD set prefering to listen to the complete Capitol concept albums or the 4CD Capitol singles collection.

However I'm just finishing listening to the complete 3CDs and have quite enjoyed this cherry-picked collection of singles and album tracks from the classic Capitol years.

Actually there were several nice suprises along the way.

Magic stuff

It's the same way with me... I usually listen to the concept albums most of the time but I'll give this box set a listen too.

The One To Get.

This set brings back so many memories. I remember listening to this cd all the time when I was 6 or 7, and even then loving all the songs, begging for the cds to be played on car rides, and sitting in my room on rainy days with my first walkman on just listening to Frank.

Last year, when my interest in Frank's music was rekindled thanks to Sinatra: Vegas, the first cd I bought in my quest get reacquainted with Ol' Blue Eyes was this set and I automatically fell in love with him all over again.

For anyone just getting into Frank, this is the place to start.

Back in 1990, most CD jewel cases were sold in cardboard long boxes, because those fit in the existing record store racks for LPs (two CD boxes side by side). Eventually, most store owners updated their display cases, and the long boxes were eliminated. The demise of those wasteful cardboard boxes was also hastened by the vocal protests of the ecologically-concerned.
Just as these were being phased out for the reason you mention, mock rock band Spinal Tap marketed their BREAK LIKE THE WIND CD in an 18-inch "extra-long box" so the customer would have "more to recycle." I don't know if it ever actually appeared in stores, but I remember seeing the band members on TV a couple of times, extra-long box in hand, boasting about their "eco-friendly" stance.

Long boxes

Oh, dear - I didn't know the long box was so ecologically unsound - I thought it was a brilliant design idea: I love it. The grey upholostered package seems just so redolent of a bygone era. I think maybe so am I...
