Patrick, my memory about the song "Come Fly With Me" is fun. When I was 16, now 51, a classmate of mine who gave me the "court" has written a love note on the photocopy of the album with this song. When he gave me his card with the words of love, I am angry because he had written on the face of FRANK!

He wanted to do something amazing for me,he knew I liked FRANK, but has it all wrong.

Now looking back I am sorry, but is !!

Sorry so long, but I am so curious and know answers are here.

Come Fly With Me, Capitol re-issue * mono W 920 on the back album jacket hear the "High Fidelity" Recording logo. Note below Frank's photo is the Flight Log notes. *12 tracks: Come Fly With me; Around The World; Isle of Capri; Moonlight In Vermont; Autumn in NY; On The road To Mandalay. *SIDE 2: *Let's Get Away From It All; April In Paris; London By Night; Brazil; Blue Hawaii; and It's Nice To Go Traveling. My copy is 180 gram mono with no "Stereo" notation anywhere. There is a gold label "From The Capitol Vaults" on the bottom left side on the shrink-wrap. *On the inside there is a nice white paper sleeve with a clear vinyl liner. Also, there is an addition paper sleeve called "This Protective Envelope" . *On the other side is a 9 inch circle with "a word about High Fidelity and an explanation. *Side 1 inner groove markings are: S-70050 * 507768865313 G1 * Rm * (?) * *mastered by Capitol on side 1. *Side 2 is S-70051 * *50999688 65313- B G1 *Zm *(?) *. *The label says W-920 *(W1-920) on side 1. *On side 2 W-920 *W2-920) *At the outer edge of the rainbow label it says manufactured for Essex Productions, Inc.*
The reason I ask is someone told me this disc was cut from a digital file and not the original master tapes. This mono version sounds great to me, but I figured I would ask those fans of Frank's who are in the know.*
I have a stereo *version of Come Fly With Me that he ends with "Pack a small bag". This mono version does not close that way.*
Just wondering who did the mastering and pressing of this disc and if it was a digital transfer? *

You have the recent (2009) reissue described earlier in this thread, but with the artwork corrected from that shown in post #130.

The version(s) with the "Pack a small bag" (or "Don't tell your mama") coda are a different recording, i.e. from Reprise in 1965.

You can find a lengthy discussion of this at the Steve Hoffman forums (HERE). There, it's suggested that the "Rm" in the dead wax stands for Ron McMaster. I can't answer the digital question, but the consensus among audiophiles is that it's definitely not the original mono master, but it ain't bad.

Quite a thread.

Pretty winding, but very informative. I will be thinking about buying others fron Acoustic Sounds when I can. Very pleased with my mono copy.

Jim, you have excellent taste in albums! Frank & Billy were, indeed, in "rarefied air," when they recorded this Masterpiece!

I think I actually prefer the stereo version, but this mono is very interesting. Which do you prefer?

First a thank-you to "Bob near Boston" for the informed answer to Jim Tavegia's question. Question for Mr. Freed: Was "On the Road to Mandalay" not included on the original U.K. release of COME FLY WITH ME?

Over at the 'world's biggest website for musicians' -- on the thread I have going celebrating "great old songs/great singers" I just responded to a pejorative comment from a friend about Frank & Billy May's send-up of the song based on a Rudyard Kipling poem, and recalled English efforts to stifle its performance in Jolly Olde England. It also provided me an occasion to include something I always treasured -- from Nancy's first book (paperback) on her Dad. How Sinatra quoted his (and my) favorite line from Kipling's greatest poem, IF:

"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster -- and treat those two imposters just the same."

With the moderator's indulgence, a link to my shared appreciation of Frank & Billy's achievment on "Mandalay."

Thank YOU for the acknowledgment, Mark. Answer for Mr. Blackburn: Yes, "Mandalay" was replaced on all original releases of the album in the British Empire. See my post #56 from many years ago, for complete details:

Grey Label Vs. Rainbow Label

I have a few versions of this on vinyl. The other night I played the first half on a pretty nice grey label version then the second half on a rainbow label that, I think, is from the late 60s or so. Maybe 70s. Both mono.

I was astonished at the difference. The grey label was far superior. Why did Capitol monkey with the pressings? Shouldn't they be the same? The old copy from the 50s sounded so much more lifelike and full.

I agree, Rich. I love the gray label mono. It's nice that the reissue from a few years back was in mono; but I think it has too much reverb. I transferred the gray label mono to CD and it's the only version I listen to of this great album (which I listen to frequently).

Gentlemen,
What's the easiest way of finding the gray label mono, or are you talking vinyl to CD?

Charlie, I picked up the album on ebay. It was described as only 'very good', and I was really only ordering it for the album cover, which I'd planned to frame. I threw it on my turntable and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was really near mint.

I have a receiver with phono inputs attached to my desktop PC's sound card. I recorded to my hard drive and then made a CD of it. This is now my preferred version of the album. The multi-mike recording reveals extra instruments and over-all different sound from the stereo version.

Thanks Dave. I'm going to try it with a copy of Pal Joey
I picked up. It converts it straight to .AIFF files, so we'll see.
Best,
Charlie
