I've warmed up to the new version a bit, but I still prefer my vinyl copy and the CD version I have as far as the mix goes. It was a bit of an aural shock listening to this new mix, but it's worn off somewhat. I appreciate the clarity of the Concord and all the time and money that went into its restoration, but I tend to go for warmth over clarity.
Sort of off topic, but I have here a SACD of the Louis Armstrong album "Satch Plays Fats." A friend bought this same album on vinyl for a dollar at Amoeba music. I set it up so both were in sync and we switched back and forth between the two audio sources on my receiver. Both of us preferred the vinyl. The SACD had more presence and clarity, but the vinyl was more embracing. I still plan to shell out 125 for Satch plays W.C. Handy on SACD when i'm feeling like blowing a bunch of money (It's out of print). There's a lot to be said for the SACD format, and some are better than others. Too bad it never caught on. |

Dana just called. My "Daughter-Nurse-To-Be "volunteered" me for this Monday, Presidents Day @ The Soldiers Home. A couple of the nurses, whose Moms were "bobbysoxer babes" requested an all-Frank "Then & Again." That's easier than most themes.
Needless to say, TCS lends itself beautifully to this program, with such magnificent tracks as "Ol' Man River," "Soliloquy," "Bewitched, Bothered, & Bewildered" and "You'll Never Walk Alone!" Made some quickie notes, and I'll include, among others: "Stardust," "Everything Happens To Me," "Autumn In New York," "The Song Is You," "Night & Day," "Time After Time," "Some Enchanted Evening (will use the Repertory Theater version, not the HB Barnum)," "All Of Me," "Laura," "Body and Soul," "Nevertheless," "How Deep Is The Ocean?" and "I've Got A Crush On You" and "The House I Live In." Should be fun!

The "new" version is different, but offers another perspective (on the orchester). I still prefer the EOTC edition. There's always a discussion when a new Concord version has been released. I've just discovered the Dean Martin Reprise Years on the two Bear Family Box Sets. These Reprise tracks sound clean and clear... just fantastic. Let them do the entire FS material!

I find it hard to understand why this improved remastering is considered to be so very different? To me it sounds more closely to what it was supposed to sound, as described on that 1963 label on the original LP cover - the remastering cleans and clears the sound"!
Is anyone here really saying that Frank Jr, who worked on this remastering, did not know what he was doing when he cleared this for release? When Nancy says "Dad preferred a little reverb on his voice, on record and on stage" , is she saying that they made a mistake by not putting enough reverb to her Dad's voice on this remastering? I don't think so! Perhaps it may sound as if there is less reverb than before because of the new clarity, but I do not think it sounds like there is no reverb at all. I'm not saying there is no room for further improvement of the sound, only that in my opinion this remastering is an improved version by reason of the sound being somewhat clearer and cleaner than before! Whether the new sound takes anything away from previous releases, I believe, is a matter of personal opinion and very much depends on the equipment you play it on and the listeners own ears! There is I think considerable precedent for saying that if you listen to something one way for years and you learn to love it that way, to hear it differently may not be your personal preference whether it is in reality an improvement or not, as the case may be.

No ones criticising anyone Jeffrey, to my ears and on my system it sounds awful.
Honest truth. I appreciate the effort put in, the result just isn't very good, true of most of the concord releases. I can't and won't say everything new is "brilliant" etc when it isn't. Others may feel differently, and that's all good to. |

Thanks Nick. I am not sure that I mentioned criticism in my last post, but there is nothing wrong with good honest criticism and, without it, these threads would be deadly dull.
I do begin to wonder about my own understanding and appreciation of this music and the sound of these remastered recordings when I read so many other people's views about this new version of the album. For some reason I am simply am not hearing some of the things in this new release which others are unhappy about. I am happy with this new recording and although it generally goes against the grain to invest in a further CD of the same album I have already, in this case I really do believe that it has been money well spent. I guess that it could be that I do not have the most stunning sounding hifi system. On the other hand, I have long appreciated the good quality pressings and transfers and I can tell the difference when I hear a clear sounding recording.

It just sounds great on my stereo at home. On my iPod I still prefer the EOTC version. Dino: Actually I own all of his Capitol albums and compilations (all remastered) on CD and mp3..... masterpieces! But I'm not crazy about the old Apollo/Diamond songs and the various tracks from the movies because I can't stand the Jerry vocals. So I won't buy those two box sets. But when it comes to FS I'm a kind of completist. So I have to buy all these new Concord issues.

I could hold out no longer ..
I ordered the CD today, I don't normally " double up" apart from " Ring-A- Ding Ding " that is LOL! BUT I really want to hear " Ol' Man River" with Frank "right out there" in front of me.
I got a little fed up waiting for the iTunes download. I bet it'll be there now in a couple of days LOL!

The CD arrived Saturday morning, and although I have noticed some differences with this new version , the main thing that got my attention was just how FABULOUS " The Concert Sinatra" is , of course I already knew that , I' ve played it many many times, but listening to it again over the weekend reminded me what a masterpiece this album is. It's one of those albums that stops me in my tracks and takes my breath away.

I think many SFFers are aware (via my posts) that I don't make comparisons. I don't think, and I've never thought "along those lines!." If a performance, a painting, a novel, a recording -- sends shivers up & down my spine, those emotions & feelings are "registered," and those memorable moments are always with me!
When I listen to (in the order in which they first recorded it): Jules Bledsoe, Paul Robeson, Frank Sinatra, and William Warfield, sing "Ol' Man River," the spine-tingling starts with the opening line (which has experienced many variations since 1927), and lasts until the closing "just keeps rolling along." (which has, happily, remained the same since that eventful December 27th evening, 85 years ago! Frank's "Concert Sinatra" performance is unsurpassed!

The Next Concord Release
Is there any "word on the wind" what the next "Sinatra Concord Release" will be and when?

This Nearly Was Mine
About once a week it seems (to me) Channel 71 "Siriusly Sinatra" plays a track from this, my all-time favorite recordings of (mostly) Richard Rodgers tunes. And they ("Jersey Lou" Simon?) continue to play the older version -- more closely resembling the black vinyl original that most everyone (Nancy included) prefers. Today it was one of my favorite (of 16) great waltzes by Rodgers (my favorite melodist). As I said once in a letter to our favorite singer, he (Rodgers) wrote more memorable tunes (more than 50) than any other composer -- songs I only needed to hear once, to recall in my mind's ear FOREVER.
I used it as an excuse to praise the "best-ever" recording of THIS NEARLY WAS MINE . . . elsewhere this day. With the moderator's indulgence, a link; hope the Family enjoys. Oh yes, and by quoting from Pamela Tiffin's bio, I managed to include Nancy's name too! See the last posting this day on my favorite song by Rodgers & Hammerstein, the Academy Award winner of 1945, "It Might As Well Be Spring." http://www.harmonycentral.com/t5/Son...742458#M131623 |
