BTW, I think that "new" remix of "Bewitched" is a good candidate for a bonus track.

Regardless of how it's mixed, or remixed, it will be gorgeous.

The manner in which this title is mixed or remixed is very worthy of discussion, because of the unique way it was recorded.

Chuck Granata devotes a section of his book to this album, and he writes at length about how much MORE gorgeous it could sound if remixed from the original sources (thought to be lost at the time of Chuck's writing). As I indicated earlier, unofficial reports suggest that won't happen with this upcoming compact disc release, but the subject is still of great interest.

Those of us who already own both previous incarnations of The Concert Sinatra should look forward to improved sound quality on this newly "remastered and expanded" version.

Bob, the sound will be much improved even if they remix the album from the 3-track master tape reduction of the original multi-track film elements. The majority of the degradation of sound likely occurred at the stage where the 3-track master tape was mixed to two-track. The original 3-track exists, and sounds superb (from what I'm told). So, regardless of which source is used (original six-track magnetic film session masters, or the 3-track magnetic tape reduction), the sound will be much better than what we've heard for nearly 50 years!

Actually there are 9 tracks on the 35mm. Who'd'a thunk it.

As I understand it, a problem with those 35mm magnetic film reels is that they have shrunk unevenly. Each of the three separate 3-track reels runs off-speed from the others. Putting all 9 tracks together properly is a major technical undertaking.

Bob, Chuck, Greg, Jeffrey, et al -- I love you all, but the technical discussions send me to my bottle of Excedrins! Don't mind me -- I can still remember every major Oscar winner since '27, and I can rattle off every N.L. batting champion since 1876, so I know I haven't totally lost it...it just seems that every time I try to absorb the mixing, re-mixing, 35mm,etc., and I do read EVERY word -- two very tiny guys with hammers try to duplicate Gene Krupa's solo on "Sing, Sing, Sing," using my head for the drums! But, to quote the great Mr. Porter, "I love all of you!" I just wish I had purchased stock in Excedrin!!

Stanley, If this was, say, the Politics forum, I could agree with you.

We all have our different interests and passions. This would be a very dull place for Frank Sinatra music discussion if we didn't.

Well Bob, harking back to what you said at the bottom of the last page and reading what was said about the Mag Film shrinkage makes one rather sad. Surely the reason Bewitched was remastered from the Mag Film is because that would have achieved the best possible sound quality?

If that is the case, not realising the shrinkage had caused a problem, it had seemed logical to me that further tracks would sooner or later get the same treatment as Bewitched and if the whole album was ever to be re-released in a remastered format, which meant time and money would be spent on it, as it has now, then perhaps it would have made sense, at least to my understanding, that further work should have been done on the Mag Film so that the best possible quality was achieved before it is too late.

From what I read, the 3 track pristine master they have used still needed some remastering tweaking work before that would sound good enough for release - so what the end result will be is interesting to me. I wonder if they can eradicate all of the hiss which can be heard on all of the previous releases and yet still achieve a very high quality sound? But Chuck has answered this above as best he can and so it seems clear that whatever is to be released is going to sound a lot better than what we have been hearing thus far - which is really exciting to learn.

Since there does not yet appear to be any further word above, dare I ask again the question What does it mean ..."and Expanded"? Hasd there been any further information on what this might mean?
