Sony

Are these the new remasters by Didier Deutsch which you hinted at in this previous thread: SONY transfers?

It is significant that these will bear the Sony label and will be the first release of Dorsey material since BMG/RCA merged with Sony/Columbia/Legacy.

<< The Essential Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey >>

If that's the actual title, SONY might want to reconsider the name. There already exists a Columbia/Legacy CD titled The Essential Frank Sinatra: The Columbia Years. (OTOH, looking at the existing CD, I notice that it's part of "The Essential Collection" series, so maybe that's what SONY has in mind for the new issue?) Whatever they call it, I'm looking forward to a new release.

Fine idea

But isn't this release a little redundant since all the selections are included in the brilliant RCA Five CD Sinatra - Dorsey Box.
Although perhaps those who buy it will then seek out the complete box set.

As far as I know that's just a working title. I'll ask if they have the final yet.

Good point, Ed. And some of us, who are fanatics, will buy it for any new improvements resulting from advances in sound restoration technology. I also like to buy a redundant album for its packaging, e.g. liner notes and photos, assuming enough effort is made in that area to make the purchase worthwhile.

Having said that, I would prefer to see more of the '40s radio material released, such as Didier and Chuck did with the Sinatra Sings Gershwin CD I just listened to last week.

I wonder if they have had any luck in locating the master for the first try at "I'll Never Smile Again"?

Bob,

If you enjoy Sinatra Sings Gershwin, check out the companion CD that also includes 40's radio tracks: Sinatra Sings Cole Porter. It includes a Begin the Beguine to die for.

Has a release date been set for "The Essential Frank Sinatra & Tommy Dorsey" set? I'm more than sure to buy it to get an introduction to his earliest stuff.

I'd love to see Columbia revist Frank for their "The Essential..." line of CD's. Personally, I idn't go wild for the song selection on the 1 disc, 15 track CD. Certainly Frank's tenure at Columbia records must have produced more essential tracks.
