The original release date of this set is July 1, 1997.
US label/catalog: COLUMBIA/LEGACY C2K 65244
US UPC#: 074646524428
It was issued with a slip-cover.

Note : The set was been re-issued late 2010 as The Essential Frank Sinatra
: The Columbia Years

Anybody needing an introduction to the wealth of wonderful material recorded by Sinatra at Columbia, could do a lot worse than seek out this fine compilation, which has some of his finest work for that label.

I did put my original post into the "Complete Columbia" thread Bernhard at the time the Sinatra Recordings section was closed to new thread posts, as Bennet has started this thread I think it has a valid place on it's own as an excellent sampler compilation in itself.

regards

Marty

I love this compilation, Marty recommended it to me a little while ago as my first taste of the Columbia recordings, it is a very welcome addition to my collection.

In that case, let me tell you right now that this set has given me a new view at the Columbia era. Though not his best, indeed we can see the formation of Frank and Ithink it spans much of his emmotional development from his purity and gaiety to the point where his marrage to Ava was breaking appart, where this set leaves us with "I'm a Fool To Want You".

The compilation is set extremely well, not in chronological order but In a way were every song leads perfectly to the new song that follows it.

Great restoration by Charles Granata and Didier Deutsch. It sonds crisp, life like and seems to be extremley well done. I love all the songs placed in the compilation.

The song on here which I really did fall in love with perhaps is "It Never Entered My Mind". Frank's subsiquent recordings were better but this recording meets them and brings a dimension to the song that couldn't be explored by an older Sinatra.

Magnificent set.

Comparing the ballads featured here with those revisited on "Nice & Easy" and other later ballad discs is an interesting and enjoyable exercise, I still have difficulty naming a favourite "I've Got A Crush On You".

It's like hearing them by two seperate performers, the younger purer voiced Sinatra sweetly sings them as love songs, but later, the older (maybe a lot wiser) Voice gives them a "torch" quality which makes them completely different takes on identical lyrics.

These smaller compilations are extremely important in themselves, despite the availability of boxed sets, as they offer these real jewels to more people, who are either discovering Sinatra (or facets of him) or don't have the resources to invest in larger more comprehensive collections. I hope Chuck and the Sony team come up with more collections of this quality and variety.

Marty,

With your kind permission may I add:
The original release date of this set is July 1, 1997.
US label/catalog: COLUMBIA/LEGACY C2K 65244
US UPC#: 074646524428
It was issued with a slip-cover.
It is still in print with a $24.98 list.

I love this era. Those first several years on Columbia, were the years when his natural talent overwhelmed a nation. This is a first-rate primer lovingly compiled by Didier & Chuck.

Peace, Dean

Portrait of Sinatra..Question...

I have a question regarding the above...I have a two sleeve LP tittled "Portrait of Sinatra" ..Forty songs from the life of a man.The cover is a beautiful painting of FS by Michael Noakes..
I purchased this album in Zurick - Switzerland in April 1977
almost thirty years ago.

It is on a REPRISE LABEL....#K64039
here is what is says....
A Reprise recording distributed by WEA Records LTD.
P % C 1977 "Warner Communications Co."
Sleeve printed and made in England by Gothic Print
Finishers Ltd. London SE92EQ

All the songs are different I quess what I surmise is that this is a completely different compilation issued in 1977. which has nothing to do with 1997 issue. Is that what it is?
Thanks, Elba..

Yes Elba

an entirely different collection altogether. I know the double album you are referring to, although i'm not sure if it's just a UK Reprise compilation though.

By the way "Happy Birthday"

Available

Not issued in the US, but it was available just about everywhere back then. I still have my copy. Unusual for having ten songs on each side of each LP.

Sweet Lorraine

I have 2 recordings of FS singing Sweet Loraine. One is a Nelson Riddle arrangement from The Reprise Collection and the other is from Portrait of Sinatra. This arrangement is great and the piano playing is so wonderful. It's such a laid back relaxing jazz piece. My collection calls this track an alternate; what was the original cut?

(added) This is such a terrific CD that it's worthy of bumping up this thread.

Thanks for bumping this thread, Greg. It really is a great two-disc collection (still in print) which doesn't get much attention.

I can't agree more. Nat Cole (piano), Coleman Hawkins (tenor), Johnny Hodges (alto), Lawrence Brown (trombone), and Charlie Shavers (trumpet)—all with solos on this track. It doesn't get any better than that.

The version of "Sweet Lorraine" on this set is indeed a (previously unreleased) alternate take. The original 78 version may be heard on Sinatra Sings His Greatest Hits, The Best Of The Columbia Years, and The Complete Recordings box set.

I thought I recognize that piano playing stye. It's great to know that he and Frank worked together. As well as Coleman Hawkins and Johnny Hodges.
