THE RARE SINATRA (Capitol) 1978

I was going through my collection of LP's and I came across an LP entitled "The Rare Sinatra". It is a Capitol / EMI release of 1978 and has some wonderful tracks. It contains a ballad version of 'Day In, Day Out' and another very nice ballad entitled 'There's A Flaw In My Flue' which I though was going to be one of those silly, comedy songs.

I don't know where I got this LP (or even when I got it) but, it is becoming one of my favorite FS LP's. I can't seem to find any reference to this LP on the net and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

The tracks are:

Side 1

1- Don't Make A Beggar Of Me
2- Ya Better Stop
3- Day In, Day Out
4- Memories Of You
5- If It's The Last Thing I do
6- I couldn't Care Less

Side 2

1- Take A Chance
2- There's A Flaw In My Flue
3- The Song Is You
4- Where Or-When
5- It All Depends On You
6- The One I Love

ONE GREAT ALBUM

I also own a copy of this British Capitol/EMI release, purchased from Tower Records back in the early 80s, when Tower maintained a large inventory of imported LPs. I cannot tell you muich more than the fact that I think it is one great album. Perhaps someone else here can provide a better back story. I just know that I love this album.

"The Rare Sinatra"

The album is also on CD with six more tracks:
13. How Are Ya' Fixed for Love
14. I'm Walking Behind You
15. Wait Till You See Her
16. Nothing in Common
17. Same Old Song and Dance
18, The One I Love Belongs to Somebody \
Else.

All 18 have long been availabe on other CD's. For example, "There's a Flaw in My Flue" and "If It's the Last Thing I Do" are on "Close to You," the album for which they were recorded.

"Where or When" is a bonus track on the CD version of "Only the Lonely"

"Day in, Day Out" is a bonus on "Nice 'n Easy."

The expanded CD version of this 1978 British LP is described in the thread for the UK box set, where it appears as disc 21 of 21: The Capitol Years.

Well, you don't have to search for it, as it is not available outside the box set. Most of the material, though, is also available outside the album. Will post a listing later.

There were three Sinatra "Rarities" albums from Capitol: two issued in Australia, one in England. All three were coveted by FS buffs, as they provided some very unusual material BEFORE the proliferation of LP and CD reissues.

the One I Love

The One I Love Belongs to Somebody Else was recorded for the "No One Cares" LP, but left off lthe album. It is on the CD version of the album as well as the Japanese LP reissue that came out in the 1980's. .

"The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else"

While everything that Ed says is true, the history of this Capitol ballad version of the Gus Kahn/Isham Jones classic tune is somewhat more complicated.

The British 21-CD box set, The Capitol Years, contains TWO versions of "The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else."

The first version appears on Disc 13 (No One Cares), where it was restored as the 12th track on that album when it was issued in the UK in 1984, individually and as part of a 20-LP box set. This is the track that Ed is describing, which first appeared in the US in 1990 on The Capitol Years 3-CD set, and then in 1991 as a bonus track on the No One Cares CD.

But that one is an ALTERNATE TAKE of the version on Disc 21 (The Rare Sinatra), which also includes an intercut. This version first appeared on the 1973 US Longines Symphonette mail-order LP, Sinatra Like Never Before, and then in 1978 on the UK Capitol LP under discussion, The Rare Sinatra. Stefan is perfectly correct in claiming that this "rare" version is exclusive to the UK 21-CD box, as far as authorized Compact Disc issues go.

If you listen carefully to both versions, you can differentiate them at about 1:19 into the song:

(1) the hands [PAUSE] I HELD belong to somebody else
(2) the hands I HOLD belong to somebody else

Note finally that the correct recording date for this song is March 25, 1959 (not March 28, as indicated in Alan Dell's liner notes to the British CD).

[ Added: Now that I went to the trouble of explaining all that, I notice that Bernhard had covered the subject in detail some time ago, over in the No One Cares album thread (see here). ]

[ Added: See correction in following post. ]

*** CORRECTION ***

The above explanation was based on what I have read from various sources, including Bernhard's referenced post elsewhere in this forum. However, I just listened to numerous different CDs, and I must now offer a correction to what I stated above (and to Bernhard; and to at least one discographical source)...

All of the US CDs with "The One I Love" (I checked four different issues) contain the version (1) described above. However, both copies on the British 21-CD box set are identical. I.e., both Disc 13 (No One Cares) and Disc 21 (The Rare Sinatra) have the SAME track, which is the version (2) described above.

So, Stefan's claim of exclusivity for the British "rare" version still stands, but the converse is also true: The UK box lacks the version on the US CD releases, which include:

The Capitol Years (US 3-CD) 1990
No One Cares 1991
Concepts (16-CD box) 1998
No One Cares (24-bit remaster) 2002

(Note: The version of No One Cares in the new 14-CD US box, Capitol Records Concept Albums, is not of concern, since that one is true to the original US LP with only 11 tracks.)

I can't vouch for anything on LP, but the test is simple enough: "held" or "hold" at 1:20 into the song. Ed Spiegel?

Where (or when ) has the 1958 alternate "The Song Is You" (found on the UK The Rare Sinatra) ever been released on an EP? I've never heard of that before.

rare sinatra 1978

yes i bought the LP in 1978. It was produced by Alan Dell RIP a close business asociate of franks here in Britain - he also produced GREAT SONGS FROM GB and the best ever COMPLETE DORSEY years LP set in the late '80's for RCA 6 LPS IN ALL - it was impoprtant for me in terms of my collection because it contained recordings previously unisssued in GB and on the sleeve referred to certain items in the capitol vaults requiring Mr Sinatra's permission to issue e.g. THE SEA SONG which was in fact never issued out by capitol in the UK...

rare sinatra - further comment

re : the song is you...to the best of my recollection - I will look at my LP when I get home from the wetherby library where I use the internet - this song is not on the British capitol publication.
I am only aware of one capitol studio reecording of the song being published in Britain and that is the swinging version with nelson riddle on the album SINATRA'S SWINGIN' SESSION...

was there another capitol studio recording ? I have all the 1940 and dorsey interpreations of this greart song and the reprise recording for the TRILOGY...

BOB come to the rescue !
