The collection is part of the Sinatra "basic collection" (together with the 4 CD "The Best Of The Columbia Years" and the 3 CD "The Capitol Years" set). While this was a must-have for any Sinatra collector at the time it was issued, as it included several previously unissued recordings (among them several tracks for a planned concept album about women, that never got finished and the 1986 vocal on "Mack The Knife", which has been used on all subsequent CD issues), it has now lost a bit of its meaning, as all of these recordings have appeared on the 1995 set "The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings". However, this is still a great collection to get an overview about the Reprise era and a pleasure to listen to (you can program a playlist of this by using the compilation hints given before each track title).

For me, the collection is once again a proof, that I couldn't live without the entire stuff, even if one did the ultimate compilation (except one would be using 20 disks to do the ultimate collection ).

Nice thread, Stefan, for a very nice collection!

This was a significant release when it first appeared (on the occasion of Sinatra's 75th birthday), for the numerous tracks which were previously unreleased on either vinyl or silver. It includes a 36-page booklet with nice essays by William Kennedy, David McClintick and James Isaacs, along with photos and track-by-track notes.

This compilation has remained in Reprise's catalog continuously since 1990, and it is an excellent choice for anyone wanting an introduction to the Reprise years.

The next (big) step up, of course, is The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings, which appeared five years later. Stefan has nicely included the code numbers supplied by Rick In Sydney in the thread for the complete 20-CD box set:

P.S. If you buy this "tall form" box and booklet, don't miss the four-page center foldout spread. It shows color thumbnails of 98 Reprise album covers, including all US issues and many foreign covers.

Reprise 4-CD Box Set

Next week is my 28th birthday, and for a b-day gift to myself I bought the 4-CD Reprise boxset. It came in the mail today, and even though I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, I'm really excited about it. I couldn't afford the 20 CD set (not right now, not with a new house! My wife wouldn't allow it! ) but I'm hoping that someday I'll run across a good deal on Ebay or somewhere for the set. Anyway, I really don't have much to say other than just to share my new purchase among friends who would understand how excited I am!!

CONGRATS!

That is a wonderful set in its' own right. Often I will put the 4 discs in and play "random" and it gives such a delightful balance of Mr. S's Reprise catalogue.

ENJOY! YES, I know just how excited you are!!!!

I have the superb 20 cd collection "The Complete Reprise Studio Collection" but I love to place the four cds of this wonderful collection in my cd changer and hear it all the way. I know that it's only the tip of the iceberg of Frank Sinatra's fantastic repertoire, a kind of "Best Of..", but its so well selected.

I think this may have been the first collection I bought - MAINLY for "Tina"....

I too now have the "The Complete Reprise Studio Collection" but I agree this 4 disc set makes a great introduction to the era.

This was my very first Frank boxed set... Purchased years ago. And I still spin it at least once a month. It got played in it's entirety a few times in the trailer on vacation in Maryland this year.

If you are contemplating getting any Sinatra at all, this would be a great starting place.

A friend of mine got this when it was released and when he told me about the songs that were released for this collection I was in the store the next day. Also in the package was a card advertising the Capitol Years 3cd set and also a mail in card for a 3 VHS set of the Reprise Collection for 69.98! Those VHS tapes were expensive then!It is a great set with a good amount of unreleased material. Until the suitcase in 1995, this was the best thing out there. Joe

Some of the songs in this early package have inferior sound to later mixes. See for example here: "Let's Fall In Love".
