I believe this set was originally offered exclusively by the Saturday Evening Post magazine. Several of the LPs were eventually released on the Harmony budget label (licensed from Reprise by Columbia Records). The CD reissue has very poor sound. This needs to be remastered from the original session tapes and not the 2 track LP tapes.

Vinny,
Cutting or punching holes in an album cover (lp, cass, cd...) is/was to keep stores from returning over-run or promotional copies for credit against the store's account. Peace, Dean

LP box with LPs in Fold-Out jackets with liner notes is rare.

So what's the story here?
LP Boxset / foldouts / liner notes is the Ist Edition?
SE Post is 2nd Ed? Harmony is 3rd? Dates? |

I don't know the dates, but the Saturday Evening Post box set was the first edition I believe. There was a magazine ad in the publication and a direct mail ad as well. Next came the Reprise store edition which was not a box set but individual LPs (?) and finally the Harmony LPs which listed for $1.98 mono and $2.98 stereo.

Hey Peter
Thanks!
Gee, quality scans of that SEP ad (and the direct mail also) would sure dress up this thread... |

Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre
Rick,
Thanks so much for posting the lists of songs and the covers from the 4-cd box set. I have these recordings. They are wonderful! Recently I acquired a copy of the 1963 Christmas lp!

The four LPs (sold individually) came out on Reprise in November 1963.

Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre
Rick,
Thank you for posting these wonderful songs. I have them but I'm thinking of the newer fans who may not be aware that they even exist. Whenever I go into a collectible shop or flea market I always look for Frank's old LPs and have found some fantastic bargains. I never leave a Sinatra album on the shelf. I have three or four of some of them because I play them and it's nice to have extras on hand.

Bumping up this thread while having chosen this set's "Finian's Rainbow" disc for morning music. Rosie's "Look To The Rainbow" is my favourite here. Wish Sinatra would have chimed in (at least) on "Glocca Mora".

Two questions; is this set still available for sale? I have been keeping an eye on eBay, but none have popped up in a while, although there is a compilation CD out there right now, I would rather find the whole 4 CD set. And, what is the duet like of 'So in Love' with Frank and Keely? My wife and I have fallen in love (no pun intended) with the version on the 'De-Lovely' soundtrack and have been wondering if Frank had ever covered the song. Is his version a slow ballad or an uptempo swing number? I guess ultimately I should break down and buy one of the Reprise suitcases when they come up and just be done with the whole thing but I have enjoyed collecting the individual CD's.

<< is this set still available for sale? >>
It was available up until recently, but a web search today is discouraging: I could find only two Amazon marketplace sellers offering used copies for exorbitant prices ($190-$200). (FYI: Original list price was in the neighborhood of $50.) The set seems to have gone out of print around last fall. WAIT! I found one for $45 here. Considering that it's unavailable at other online sellers (e.g. Footlight, CD Universe, etc.), that may be an outdated listing, but it's worth a try. << what is the duet like of 'So in Love' with Frank and Keely? >> Wonderful! It's a moderately uptempo number, with a tango-like backing, but a lot of strings and lush orchestration. Much closer to a ballad than a swinger, especially the way Frank and Keely do it. There's also a solo version of "So In Love" by Johnny Prophet. I enjoy this album; "We Open In Venice" with Frank, Dean, and Sammy is a lot of fun. I hope you can find it. The whole box set is a treat. |

Incidentally, the four-CD box set, produced by Greg Geller and mastered by Lee Herschberg, was issued September 26, 2000.
Reprise certainly didn't leave this long neglected part of their Sinatra catalog in print for very long.

And Jo Stafford does a GREAT "I'll Know" from Guys and Dolls. (My favorite rendition, including Streisand's.) There are many gems in this collection, besides the FS material. |

I'm somewhat partial to Frank's version. See here: Younger Than Springtime.
