This compilation CD has an interesting history. It was actually first released, with this different cover, back in 1989. The original catalog number on the UK EMI/Music For Pleasure label was CD-MFP 6052.

[ Before that, the album first appeared as an LP (Capitol/EMI CAPS 1038), with a particularly unattractive cover image. (See here and Martin's note below.) ]

At the time of issue—before Capitol released the Collector's Series (1989), The Capitol Years 3-CD set (1990), and The Complete Capitol Singles Collection 4-CD set (1996)—most of these tracks were unavailable in the USA on Compact Disc. I recall being overjoyed to find this gem in a bargain rack at Tower Records.

Note that the first 10 tracks (through "Chicago") are mono, while the last 8 tracks (from "Monique") are stereo.

See also a similar US release which was not issued until 1993: Frank Sinatra At The Movies.

This particular album

can also be found as part of an EMI/Music For Pleasure 3 disc release with box/slip case, that also includes another compilation "20 Classic Tracks" (a UK CD also from '98, previously released on an MFP LP back in the 70s under another title I think, which contains selections culled from "Come Fly With Me" & "Come Dance With Me") as well as "Songs For Young Lovers/Swing Easy"

an absolute bargain sampler for new Sinatra fans, it's around a tenner in British highstreet record stores, an excellent introduction to Capitol material.

This was also released as a single LP in 1980 in the UK, but as a release on Capitol/EMI - CAPS 1038. A few too many songs for a single LP, even in mono. The LP had a different cover - a cartoonish "painting" of Frank, mocking up the pose from the Academy Award Winners album, but with an Oscar statue added above Frank's hands, and a blue draped background. Not the most attractive cover, at least the way it was executed on the CAPS 1038 issue LP. I don't have a scanner so I can post a scan of the cover - sorry!

I bought the "20 Classic Tracks" on an LP - I think it ran over an hour, and sounded pretty poor! I've attached a photo. This would have been 1986-1988, based on where I lived when I remember buying it.

Marty, I still have bad dreams about that cover! I'm glad you didn't post it, and I hope mine remains hidden too.

Capitol, it would seem, could screw anything up after FS left.
