[ This release was first mentioned by Ron Sarbo in an unrelated thread. ]
Included here are four Frank Sinatra tunes from the '40s. "I'll Be Seeing You" is the RCA-Victor studio recording by the Tommy Dorsey band on February 26, 1940. Arranged by Paul Weston; trombone solo by Tommy Dorsey; clarinet solo by Johnny Mince. "Let's Get Lost" is a previously unreleased radio rehearsal transcription, from the dress rehearsal for the Lucky Strike Your Hit Parade show (CBS) of May 22, 1943. The song was no. 6 on the Hit Parade that week. (No. 1 was "As Time Goes By.") The Hit Parade Orchestra was conducted by Mark Warnow; announcer heard at the start is Kenneth Delmar. "Long Ago And Far Away" is from the Vimms Vitamins show, The Frank Sinatra Program (CBS) of February 9, 1944, which was issued on a V-Disc, including a brief spoken introduction for V-Disc by FS. (Previously released in The V-Discs box set.) Arranged and conducted by Axel Stordahl. "Saturday Night (Is The Loneliest Night In The Week)" is the Columbia studio recording of November 14, 1944 (NOT 1942, as stated erroneously in the liner notes). This is the original released take which was used in the single and V-Disc issues. Arranged by George Siravo; conducted by Axel Stordahl; clarinet solo by Artie Baker. |

Oh. My. God.
I can't WAIT to get this CD. Wow! And they've got my Mills Brothers too! What a playlist. I'll be counting down the days. Thanks for this, Bob.

I didn't list the other three discs in the box set, since only this one contains FS songs, but you might want to check that out, Bonni:
The War: A Ken Burns Film (Original TV Soundtrack) Each of the four discs is available individually as well as in the box set. |

How do you view the track list, Bob? I tried looking for a link on that site to view the rest of the songs but I see none.

Could've been a few more Bing songs in that mix...
But Mr Burns edited OUT a 30-minute segment in his "Jazz" program on Crosby - he didn't see the connection..so I guess I couldn't expect miracles from him now.

Isn't FS on the TD version of I'll Be Seeing You?

I would think so, but it's not specified on any of the online track listings I've been able to find. I wasn't sure if there's ever been a TD instrumental version without a Sinatra vocal—e.g. after FS left the band? So I decided to wait until I have a copy and/or I'm told otherwise.

Prudent plan there, Bob. Glad to see you are working on cutting down your errors.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I believe that MUST be the 1940 version with Sinatra's vocal. It was reissued in 1944 and stayed on the charts (along with Bing Crosby's version) for a long time, including through the liberation of Paris.
Not only that, but Rick's rousing vote of confidence convinces me to do the opposite: I'll change that song title to blue (and change it back later if need be).

It's great that this compilation features several Frank songs. Ken means to draw humanistic attention to this awful fiasco overseas, and maybe it will wake people up about the consequences of war. Music reaches people's feelings. To actually feel about it and not just read about it. Then maybe the masses of cattle out there won't just accept it.

Great World War II collection. I did not know Franik ever sang "Let's Get Lost." It's a good song for him. As Judy mentions, though, Crosby ought to be there, too.
Ken Burns PBS series of TV documentaries on such as NewYork, jazz, etc, are wonderful, worth seeing again and again. I'm sure this one will be right up there and am looking forward to seeing it next month. |
