I agree with LEE. This is a special album. for my generation, I consider this our Wee Small Hours album. The recording quality is a bit echo-ey, but the songs are super regardless.

There is real pain behind the voice here......and when you are blue..this album is a serious companion.

Long night is almost a religious experience, and the Gal that Got away medley...

and of course Bang Bang! (Always preferred Nancy's version on that video, though)

Monday-Quarterback....that is so so poigniant,.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

A masterpiece. Possibly the greatest album ever recorded. Sinatra's version of 'The Gal That Got Away/Never Entered My Mind' is so fantastic, words fail me. His voice is in top form, in my opinion Sinatra never sounded better.

"She was Mozart....I was Basie".

What a great song I Loved Her is, and what a great LP this is.
This is Sinatra in more pain than I care to wish upon anyone.
Singing his broken heart out.
Pouring his broken heart out.
Yeah, the voice is a little cracky, but when you've reached bottom, when you're in this kind of torment, this is what you sound like.
You're not at the top of your game.
You're down.
You're beaten.
Sinatra pulls it off brilliantly.
"She knew much more than I did....but there was one thing she didn't know.....that I loved her......because I never, ever told her so"
Duncan is right.
One of the best.

Hi Jim!

I was listening to this song this morning while getting ready for work (another rainy day here in Pitt) and it really drives the point home.

She was Wall Street....I was pawn shop......

I love this song.

I agree with Stranger and Dunc

A true classic in every way. His last GREAT album. The cover alone was perfect.

If it had a fault: wish that there was more of it.

<<If it had a fault: wish that there was more of it.>>

Well, there IS more of it -- a little more, anyway. "Everything Happens To Me," which was eventually released on the Complete Reprise Studio Recordings box and became the title track of the excellent 1996 compilation, was recorded during the She Shot Me Down sessions in April, 1981. Also on the Complete Reprise box is a version of "Hey Look, No Crying" that's significantly longer than the one which wound up on the album. And I'm not sure if it survives on tape, but Sinatra apparently rehearsed a version of "Dinner For One Please, James," which he decided not to record for the album. THAT would be a bonus track I'd love to hear!

This is, in my opinion, Sinatra's finest post-retirement album, and one of the best he ever made in his entire career, not to mention the one that made me a hardcore Frank freak! Surprisingly, considering the success of Trilogy the year before, and the tie-in TV special which aired shortly after the album's release, She Shot Me Down fared poorly sales-wise, peaking at #52 on Billboard's album charts. Truly an underappreciated classic.

PJ

P.S. -- Still another "bonus track" from the She Shot Me Down sessions, but one which sounds nothing like the rest of the album, is "Say Hello," a "New York, New York"-type swinger which was released only on a single at the time.

Special mention: Great cover/jacket work also. Great shot of Frank in contemporary dress nursing a Jack and a cigarette....definitely the Quarter To Three game face.

Agreed with the aformentioned posts....Sinatra's best post-retirement work.

Would love to hear that Dinner For One, James song...sounds really appropriate

GREAT ALL THE WAY AROUND!

W/O a doubt, one of Mr. S.'s best! I treasure it so much!

"I Loved Her" (she was polo, I was racetrack, she was afternoon tea, I was saloons. . . .) it just gets better and better.

"Thanks for the Memory" w/the newer lyrics, as opposed to Bob Hope's, are sensational. And my special love is "and now I even have to scratch my back myself"......from "It Never Entered My Mind" medly.

It's a must for all collectors, and that cover is a gasser! (front AND back!) He never, ever sounded better - right on, Dunc!

I wish "Everything Happens to Me" had been on the album; it's spectacular....a deeper, more dramatic reading than the 1975 version with the identical arrangement. However, the edited version of "Hey Look, No Crying" is a more effective reading for its brevity. (That doesn't mean I don't love having that longer version too.)

I believe "She Shot Me Down" is out of print worldwide at this point, but it's no doubt available on eBay. If you live in the States, it's also worth checking out www.half.com, which is an online clearinghouse for CDs, DVDs, books and just about everything else. You can get some great deals there.

Yes, the online stores (amazon etc.) also have this album marked "out of stock" on their European pages. Other than looking for it at Ebay, maybe it's also of use to just browse every record store you come across when on a shopping tour or visiting another city. Don't know about the US but over here in Europe, sometimes "out of the blue" you'll find copies left of items that have been out of print for some time.

If anyone detects an online source for the album, why not post it here, I recall there have been similar questions regarding this masterpiece over the last few months or so.

"SHE SHOT ME DOWN"

FYI, friends, and danke, Bernard. I remember posting this prior to "the crash" but assume it's gone.

I put this fantastic request on ALL my wish lists at amazon, barnes & nobel, borders, djangos and half.com Searched for months on Ebay and he wasn't there.

Out of the blue, receive a notice from djangos they had a used copy and I'd better husstle and order it, to which I immediately did, of course!

It had a slightly scared jewel case, but the CD was perfect. Don't recall what I paid for it, but it wasn't too much, ten or so plus $1.99 shipping!

It is my treasure, my pride and joy, and also have the vinyl as well, which I DID find on Ebay. I look at it every day when at the puter! What a way to wake up in the morning!

Try all of the above and someone is bound to receive a notice. But be patient! Also you can "order" it and if it ever is remade, you will be notified.

My pleasure to help!

our

Have a splendid day. . . it's gorgeous here in the Heartland, 70 degress and had an inch of rain last evening which we desperately needed!

This one really should be reissued..with the addition of "Everything Happens to Me"..and "Just As Though You Were Here" would fit on here nicely too. So would "Saddest Thing of All".
(Gordon's charts really need to find a home together. They tend to stick out when put in a mix with other arrangers.)

Amen, Rich.

A reissue of "She Shot Me Down" should of course contain "Everything Happens To Me" (1981 recording) as an extra track since it was originally meant to be on the album.

Bonus tracks, as you rightfully suggest, all Gordy's work and from one session (September 24, 1974):
--Just As Though You Were Here
--Everything Happened To Me (superior to 1981 I think)
--The Saddest Thing Of All (hitherto UNRELEASED, and again I think superior to the released version from 1975)

That package would make for something like "the very best of Harvest Sinatra ballad singing".
