Thanks for including this, Pedro!

This album was originally released in May 1965. The fact that it is often overlooked has to do with the fact that while some of the songs included had already been released on other albums, those that saw their first time album releases here (while already on the market on 45" singles) were later also included again on more popular "pickup" albums, which then eventually also made it to single CD.

Still I think this album - especially with its programmatic subtitle "The Singer Today" headlining a mix of standard and (by then) rather modern tunes - is an important step, it opened the year 1965 that would turn out so successfully for Sinatra.

And it would make a decent CD re-release easily, perhaps augmented by some alternate takes from the individual songs' sessions, of which in this case there are some to choose from.

Since it is a mix of different sessions, here's some further info re the individual tracks. "First time album release" refers to the situation of the release time of "Sinatra 65", of course.

Sign a petition - this album should make a separate CD soon (WITH bonus tracks and alternates)! It entered the Billboard charts in early July 1965 and stayed for 44 weeks (that's eleven months!!) and reached #9 highest. So it deserves a re-issue with the original cover artwork of course.

When asked about a possible CD release being considered or not, Reprise in 2002 responded via e-mail: There is no such Sinatra album on Reprise . --- (No comment necessary!) Truly a lost Reprise album!

Here are the track details:

SIDE ONE

Tell Her (You Love Her Each Day)

rec. 14.4.1965, arr./cond. Ernie Freeman (Reprise single 373)
FIRST TIME ALBUM RELEASE

FIRST TIME ALBUM RELEASE

FIRST TIME ALBUM RELEASE

I Like To Lead When I Dance
rec. 8.4.1964, arr./cond. Nelson Riddle (Reprise single 279)
Original album release: Robin And The Seven Hoods (Reprise, 1964)

You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me
rec. 21.2.1963, arr./cond. Nelson Riddle
(Reprise single "A New Kind Of Love" 20209)
Note: This was recorded during the sessions for Sinatra's 1963 album "Sinatra's Sinatra" but not used for it.

When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love

Luck Be A Lady
rec. 25.7.1963, arr. Billy May, cond. Morris Stoloff
Original release: Guys and Dolls (Reprise LP, part of the "Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre" 4 LP set produced by Sinatra, 1963).

If you have the Reprise 20-CD-set (the 'suitcase' or the boxed set), you can "re-construct" this lost album by programming the following in this sequence:

Side A:
CD 9-track 19
9-5
7-8
8-3
6-2
8-2

Side B:
9-20
9-4
6-17
6-15
7-1

One of the things that made this out of the ordinary was that it was not numbered like other Sinatra releases.

I worked in a record store years ago and you could easily find Sinatra Reprise catalog in the overstock section as they were in sequential order. Ring a Ding Ding was FS1001. Subsequent Sinatra albums folowed this numbering system.

Sinatra 65 did not follow this sequence it was part fo the RS6000 series that were reserved for the rest of the Reprise catalog

I would imagine the numbering didn't match the other Sinatra albums because, by its very title, Reprise didn't plan to have this in the catalog for very long.
Each side starts with the single market recordings with Ernie Freeman and end with album cuts or other singles; they really don't go together very well. But that cover! It's worth the cost of the album whatever music came with it.

Bernhard, I believe the recording date is correct, but "You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me" is from the last session for The Concert Sinatra, not Sinatra's Sinatra. For some reason, the audio quality isn't as good as either of those albums. The sound lacks fullness.

REMEMBER WAY BACK WHEN......

Many many months ago, we were given the address of Reprise to write to, requesting this fantastic vinyl be made into a CD. I tried to do a search but it won't take the '65 as it's not long enough! And I suppose since the crash, it wouldn't be there anyway!

SO. . . . .This is just a wonderful album. A very sweet forum friend make a CD for me from the original vinyl. (I have the original 33, but nothing on which to play it!)

"ANYTIME AT ALL" is so, so sexy (if I may use that tern)! And "STAY WITH ME" is so touching. Wish I could have seen the movie "The Cardinal".

The notes on the vinyl back really don't say much about the recordings. It is an interivew with Jimmy Bowen, Mr. S.'s producer:

"You know, he phrases greater than anybody who ever sang. He handles a lyric like you'll handle a woman. A woman has to be handled like a time bomb, you know, and that's the way he does a lyric.

He'll change the melody in places. Like in "Tell Her", he changed the melody in bar 18 or 19. Then we go to the piano and pick a key for him, a key that's comfortable, that he likes. Then he'll usually give a few more suggestions at the piano. He never dominates; he never says "This is the way we're going to do it." He asks, "What do you think of this?"

He's easy to record, because he's such a professional!"

Among these "men who care" on this great album are the four guitarists: Don Lanier, Tommy Tedesco, Johnny Gray and Billy Pitman; Pianist Leon Russell (not Bill Miller, surprisingly) Bassist Chuck Berghofer; and percussionists Hal Blaine, Emil Richards and Frankie Capp."

Let's see if Robert can get us that address again, and let's get on that petition!

Sleep well!

I think this would make a nice "twofer" CD with "Softly As I Leave You," which is also a collection of singles and assorted tracks recorded around the same time (1962-64). Both albums would easily fit on one CD, and since "Softly..." is now out of print in the States, it'd be a nice way to get them both back in the catalog.

FANTASTIC IDEA!

O.K., now, PJ, what do we have to do? Do we go on a letter-writting or emailing campaign? We could just all together buy-out Reprise and make darn sure it gets done! Ha, ha, fatta chance, eh? I have about a hundred bucks I could space. Perhaps we should start a fund so all the fanatics suggestions are listened to.

I emailed Reprise and all I rec'd. in return was a puter-generated "buy our hot records" and that was that! I was so angry, I deleted the stupid thing!

What to do, what to do. . . . . .what a tremendous combo this would be. Maybe Robert will see our request and give us some info for contacts. I also recall one of our members phoned Reprise and this dippy broad said they never made that recording!

Sinatra '65

I do agree with much of what has been said about this album. It is a shame that it is not yet issued on CD and indeed with some additional bonus tracks from the period, it could make a wonderful CD release for Sinatra fans.

Whilst there is no identifiable theme within the particular recordings, they all serve to demonstrate the fabulous condition of the Sinatra voice and his great perfomance value at that particular period in time - as he nears the 50 year birthday mark.

That supreme vocal condition continued through 'September of My Years' through to 'Moonlight Sinatra' and 'FAS and ACJ'. For me the Frank Sinatra of Sinatra '65 shows the man perhaps at or about his performance peak.

No one can discount Frank's great vocal achievements at Capitol, they are in another stratosphere, but here at this time in his life in 1965 his voice was rich, creamy, mature like the finest red wines and now also very, very powerful. That, coupled with the awsome arrangements and first rate lyric reading performances show him to be firmly at the top of his form and well in control of everything around him. This is Frank Sinatra.

The songs, they show a wide variety of works and deserve some comment.

'Tell Her (You Love Her Each Day)'. This was never one of my favourite songs and because I had personally heard it first on 'That's Life' and then on 'Greatest Hits' it was not new to me. It was a track I think FS recorded to keep up with the changing times in the music world.

'Anytime At All'. I do like this one a lot. Its kinda sassy.

'Stay With Me (Main Theme From "The Cardinal")' Now this is done very well and it is quite haunting. I cannot help but remember this song lyric - I am not sure that it makes much sense to me, come to think about it, but Frank is really strong and clear with it. His voice sounds great.

'Like To Lead When I Dance'
This is from the movie album And The Seven Hoods, but so far as I am aware it never was sung in any version of the movie I have seen - maybe I only saw a cut version. It is still Cahn and Van Heusen at their very best. Clever and witty and Frank Sinatra really gives it the A treatment. This is a perfect vehicle for FS. Only he can make it sound the way it does. I love it.

'You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me' An old Sinatra chestnut with a slightly new dress from Nelson Riddle. It would have fitted well into "Sinatra's Sinatra" but it is not quite as good as the Capitol recording in my opinion.

'My Kind Of Town' Also from Robin And The Seven Hoods, but this is the Reprise recording and it is one of the great Sinatra trade marks. Need I say more?

'When Somebody Loves You'. Again this shows up on other albums and it is a catchy number.

'Somewhere In Your Heart' The third track so far which also made it somehow to the "Greatest Hits" album. It is another catchy hip tune of the day.

'I've Never Been In Love Before'
Now this is the business. No one sings this like FS and he is at the top of his form. The voice is mello and wonderful sliding easily up and down the scale. A lesson to any singer.

'When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love'
Ditto - but even more so. What a clever song and how easy it is to understand the fun FS must have had doing this.

'Luck Be A Lady'
The definitive recording - by a very long way. Never to be surpassed, as with most of FS' recordings. This is also an FS trademark. He made it his very own. My guess is that even if FS had played the Sky Masterson role in the movie, he would not have been able to have bettered this recording at that time. It somehow needed the mature, confident and powerful Frank Sinatra to pull it off in this wonderful way - and also, no question, that wonderful Nelson Riddle chart.

I wish Frank could have stayed 50 forever - he was completely untouchable around that time.

Jeffrey's SINATRA '65 Review

Interesting reading about the album which contains material from around late '62 through '64 - with little if any from 1965. Might interest you to know I bought the album when first released - 1965 - and still listen to this day.

The album is really a compilation of his efforts during the period and, you're right, he was in fabulous voice at this time..rich, mature and powerful.

LUCK BE A LADY from Guys & Dolls is one of the best examples of songs that probably would been left "unnoticed but not entirely forgotten" if Frank had not recorded it with May's famous arrangement back in '63. All we really had was a stage recording and of course Brando's murderous interpretation. Instead, Frank took the song and made it his own..as he has done to literally hundreds of great melodies. PLEASE BE KIND from SINATRA-BASIE is another good example.

I LIKE TO LEAD WHEN I DANCE originally was sung to beautiful, sexy Barbara Rush in ROBIN and although included in the theatre version of the film - because I remember seeing it when the film was first released - somehow was edited out for TV. Too bad!!

Thanks for the review, Jeffrey.

I play it often

Hi Lu, I found a site that sold a stereo. It plays 5 cd's, has an am /fm radio, casessette player and recorder, and the best, a turn table. I can give you the name if you wish. It was not really that expensive. I got it through Amazon, but it is a Target product, however they do not carry it in Target stores. Let me know if you want any more information.

***Had an opportunity to purchase "Guys & Dolls", and veto'd it, as I cannot tolerate "Mumbles" doing Mr. S.'s song, Luck Be A Lady. Talk about lousy casting! That director must have been on vacation or paid off by someone!***

Hmmh - Frank Sinatra would have probably agreed with you here!

However, the Reprise album "Guys and Dolls" from 1963 (which was part of the 4 album set "Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre) is not the soundtrack of the 50s movie, but a re-production, and of course Frank sings "Luck Be A Lady". (This was the first release of Sinatra's version). So it's well worth getting, as is the whole 4 CD set of "Reprise Musical Repertory Theatre").

I don't think the original movie soundtrack of 'Guys and Dolls' (including Brando's try on the song) has been legitimately released anywhere?

Bernhard.

***The God's were w/me that day!***

Or maybe - Saint Francis?

But seriously, the "Guys and Dolls" movie is also worth the viewing. (In spite, if you wish, Brando doing "Luck Be A Mumble"). Rent it at some videostore for a weekend and then maybe you'll see that Sinatra's part is quite good. When Marlon embarks on the song, you could use the 4 or so minutes to feed the birds or somethin'!

Thanks to Holmes and Luxenhaus for kind comment and of course also to Bernhard for all the important and accurate information

Holmes says "I LIKE TO LEAD WHEN I DANCE originally was sung to beautiful, sexy Barbara Rush in ROBIN and although included in the theatre version of the film - because I remember seeing it when the film was first released - somehow was edited out for TV. Too bad!!"

I wonder, does that mean that when there is a DVD of this movie, (I have not seen it in the UK) it will include this song - and perhaps some other extras? If so, my question is - is that the recorded version of the song or another made just for the film?

By the way, although it is true that none of the tracks on Sinatra '65 were actually recorded in that year - in my view he was still singing with that quality as demonstrated with "September Of My Years" and the other special tracks he recorded for the 'A Man & His Music' album and the way he sung on the TV special of that same year. Sinatra was really a WOW at and around that time - no question.

I LIKE TO LEAD WHEN I DANCE...

Jeffrey,

Interesting question.

Why it was edited from the TV and, as I understand, the VHS versions? Anyone's guess because it's not only a great song and beautifully performed by Frank/ Nels but I fell an integral element of the story line. Miss Barbara is pushy and Robin likes to lead. Right? Later, of course, she pulls the same thing with Dino to spin her little web. It's okay, though, because she's drop dead gorgeous.

As far as I know there is one only recording of I LIKE TO LEAD which was to be used in the film and was for a very short time.
I believe all versions of the film have this deletion.

By the way, the last scenes were being shot Nov. 23, 1963 the day Kennedy was shot and production was halted but later completed.
