My Kind of Girl is a beautiful melody, and Frank sails through the verses like a dove. beautiful stuff.

I think the cover of "I only have eyes for you" is great too, duplicated by a live version on the "Rat PAck at the Sands" album.

Please Be Kind

I think Please Be Kind is one of the strongest songs on this album, and there are a few very good ones. The situation may be slightly different over in the States, but here in Britain this song is not widely known.

A real swinger, this one!

This CD rocks the paint off the wall! Love the way Frank does "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter." It's so typical of the way he takes a piece of music and makes it his forever, no matter how many times you've heard other people sing it. Great sax solo, too.

That's a great observation...it really does knock the paint off the wall.

Once a song has been Sinatra-ized...the rest (even if they are the original versions) can't really compare.

Alan, the same is true regarding "Please Be Kind" over here..not a particularly well known song...one of Sammy Cahn's earlier lyrics. A sultry ballad version, though, is part of the album Frank conducted for Peggy Lee in '57.

FS The Jazz Singer

This album makes me think of an earlier post - Was Frank a Jazz Singer? He is on this album. Album contains nice re-make of Tender Trap & Learnin The Blues, although I prefer the earlier Riddle arrangements slightly more.

Some nice additions to this album are Lookin At the World Through Rose Colored Glasses & Nice Work If You Can Get It. And I love this version of I Only Have Eyes For You.

This album is another winner for FS & a great colloboration with Basie.

I'm not sure what you want done with this. the link comes up "not valid".

Do you want this merged with another thread?

****The link comes up as not valid****

Nancy,

if you are referring to the link Rick posted above (several months ago last year) to a thread containing more discussion of this album, I think it is a thread that is now in the archive section, hence the link is now invalid since the URL for the thread has changed by moving it to the archives. Rick could simply update the link accordingly. (There are several other album threads here at the recording section that also carry outdated links to earlier discussions now to be found in the archive section).

Bernhard.

Hi Nancy,

I've repaired the link above, and will do same to the other outdated links. By all means merge if you feel the urge to merge - time permitting of course! But a major and thorough merging of archived stuff wouldn't be practical.

There's some great stuff going back years in the archive - I'll be letting people know about that in the Sticky, and encouraging them to search.

Thanks Bernhard.

Yes Rick I agree that that is the best way, if you gradually edit outdated links in the threads here, then people can read what's in the archives without someone having to take the trouble to merge, while future and further discussions/info will remain here at the new Recordings Section's individual threads. I guess that would ensure the intended "library effect".

Sinatra Basie

Just got a copy of Sinatra Basie the other week.
Superb. I especially like Pennies from Heaven, I won't Dance and Learnin the Blues. My collection is coming along nicely!

Anyone got a favourite track from this Cd?

Did anyone know that Basie first started out on the drums, but was persuaded by a friend to take up Piano?

Sonny Payne`s drumming shines for me on this album Pete and if I had to pick one track it would be `I Won`t Dance`

Hi Pete,

my favourite from this album should be "Lookin'At The World Thru Rose-Colored Glasses". Crazy tempo & rhythm, and great instrumental solo part between the two choruses. Gassing.

Bernhard.
