The cover photo is posed though, as by that time, they most likely would have used a screen/baffle to shield his vocal mic from the orchestra (since this was a 3 track recording). The orchestra mic-ing shown is accurate though.

Think I remembered reading something a few years ago about the engineers asking Frank not to stand in front of the brass section for that reason lol.

Can't relate to the technical jargon, guys, but Nelson's lilting arrangement, and Frank's magnificent vocal on "September In The Rain" are well worth the "price" of SSS!

Stan, in the days of mono only recordings, the engineers at Capitol typically wouldn't have any kind of physical shield around Frank and his vocal microphone because the sound picked up by his and the other microphones were all going direct to one track (mono) tape. When they started making stereo recordings, they used 3 track tape recorders - they used the 3 track tape to record the band/orchestra in stereo on two of the three tracks of the tape (left and right), and put Frank's vocal on its own track. To help keep Frank's "track" on the tape pure, they'd usually put a baffle by Frank/his mic to try & prevent the sound of the live orchestra from "leaking" into his microphone. This way they'd have his vocal on that track of the tape by itself, instead of having too much orchestra mixed in with the vocal sound that they wanted to keep separate on the tape.

Make sense?

This was one of my first Sinatra albums and I got it partly because I really like the front cover.

One of my early ones as well Allen, I used to go to the big virgin megastore and HMV on Oxford Street every month or 2 with pocket money, I well remember this was also the only Sinatra one I saw available on LP in the store as well, being the early 90s Im guessing they still had copies of the 1984 LP releases available. It was too expensive for me at the time so I ended up with it on cassette.

I only had the Norberg EOTC version but now I've discovered my favourite album in my new 'Capitol Years UK box'. What a difference... A Capitol masterpiece. My summer soundtrack!

This is a great one for SACD release. I really hope they bundle both the mono and stereo versions on the disc. I assume that if these sell, they'll release more. If there's a way to pre-order to show interest, I'd do that now.

I also wonder who's doing the mastering work on these. Steve Hoffman did a great job with the Nat Cole SACDs.

This great album swings, swings, and swings some more! I've always found Nelson's charts and Frank's "confidence" re "September In The Rain," "Always," and "Blue Moon" to be virtually letter-perfect!

Steve also mastered the DCC/Artanis "Sinatra 57 In Concert" superbly, but whoever was responsible for releasing it as a bonus disc with "Best of The Best", obviously didn't agree and decided to give it a more modern brickwalled and compressed mess instead. I've heard the "Best of The Best" version and refused to buy it, luckily for me this week I finally managed to pick up a copy of the original DCC release, The difference is night and day.

I have to say I'm looking forward to these MOFI releases and if their recent track record is anything to go by these releases will be nothing short of excellent.

This felt like Sinatra's shortest album ever, and also his most frustrating one for that. I basically wanted more more more!!! It's no wonder too, because this is Frank in his prime, and he's got the heat on his tail, and this baby swings HARD!!! Fast and hard!!!

When Your Smiling- Fantastic, basically he makes this the definitive version.
Blue Moon- Loved the orchestration, and of course Frank's magical voice.
S'Posin'- Very good and cute
It All Depends on You- Covered 3 times by Frankie, and I get it, because it's a fun and great song.
It's Only a Paper Moon- LOVED it, and I love the lyrics and how Frank sings them, it's just perfect. He owns this song.
My Blue Heaven- Great song and great version.
Should I- I really love this song and this version is just about the best thing ever. Seriously this song just about rules them all.
September in the Rain- Jeese, this might be my favorite cut on the album. I LOVED every second of it.
Always- Fantastic and swingin'!!!! Love it.
I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me- Very good. Toe-tapper.
I Concentrate On You- Great version, but I like it better on the Sinatra/Jobim album. Still, awesome.
You Do Something to Me- Ahhhhh Porter and Sinatra, always a great pairing and a great performance. Wonderful.

Apparently this was a remake" of Sinatra's last Columbia record, "Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra" and let me tell you something, this is tops that one. Don't get me wrong, I really really really love his Columbia work, but this one is off the chain!! This is an undeniable juggernaut of hunger, passion and excitement! I mean this sucker is almost as good as "A Swingin' Affair" !!! But since this was one of Frank's last Capitol records, there is a tiny sense that Sinatra was kinda detached a tad bit, just a tiny bit, making this a near masterpiece. 4 1/2 out of 5.

Pedro--I'm certainly with you on this excellent album! Would have liked the recordings to be a bit longer...unquestionably (IMO), it would have belonged "in my Sinatra Musical Museum" in the same room with the other immortal swingers -- "...Affair" & "...Lovers!"

I think My Blue Heaven might be my favourite off this one, the sax on it is just sooo good! That's not to take anything away from the rest of the album which I really do love but Heaven just has something else!

September in the Rain always glues itself into my head after hearing it.
