You hear a lot of people with mixed feelings on this album, but personally I like it and it has a permanent place in my rotation.

Jim (Stranger 56) convinced me that I needed to give "If" another try--he was right...it really is well delivered.

Best song here: You Turned My World Around

Sweet Caroline is a gasser too (he typed ducking for cover as many people here HATE this one).

Glad you listened, Chris...it really is a gem.

Hey, I like Sweet Caroline, too.....yeah, it's a little hokey, but it swings.
I also love Satisfy Me One More Time. Devilish Sinatra wails on that one!

On the softer side, as much as I like You Turned My World Around, I'd have to go with What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life as my favorite ballad on the LP, along with If.

All in all, a nice effort by Sinatra...one I still get the urge to pop into the CD player.
And everytime I do, it makes me smile.

Jim

Ya, I had been presumptious on my dismissal of 'If'.

The more I listen to the slower songs, the more I like them.

The Summer Knows

Several years back, Sinatra gave an interview to Philadephia DJ Sid Mark. One of the things he spoke about was the fact that he appealed to the songwriter, I forget the name, to change some of the lyrics. Seems he thought the music was good, but he wasn't too crazy about the lyrics. Unfortunately, at this time, I've been unable to come across the cassette tape of this interview, so I may be forgetting certain facts.l

ALSO W/YOUR ENCOURAGMENT. . .

I found this CD. I, as well, had mixed emotions prior to receiving it. But I was very pleased that it's in my collection.

I listened to it last night, and Sweet Caroline should have stayed w/Neil Diamond. I will say that's about the only tune I've heard Francis sing that I didn't particularly like. Secondly, there's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon", but after all, that was a song of the time.

The "Summer Knows", "If" & "What are You Doing" are spectacular, as always. "Satisfy Me one more Time" is a hoot!! I was lying in bed, reading "Sinatra-the Art & The Man" and Francis was singing that song! He was such a devil, you could tell he really got a charge out of recording it! ! Encore, Encore!!!

Just thought I'd bump this up as perhaps some havn't had the opp to hear it.

It's interesting to compare the two Gordon Jenkins charts on the album ("If" and "The Summer Knows") with the Jenkins charts of just a few months earlier on Ol' Blue Eyes is Back.
There is no electric guitar or heavy drum beats here; I'm guessing the difference is producer Sonny Burke let Jenkins do his thing, while on Ol' Blue Eyes, producer Don Costa persuaded Jenkins to try to modernize his sound. I could be way off here, but it makes sense to me.

I'm Gonna Make It All The Way

This is such a sad but at the same time a very brightening song. It indeed cheers me up and to listen to it now on a sunny day here just makes me

This one has its moments (Satisfy Me One More Time, What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life, heck, even Sweet Caroline). But I still think it's the worst album he ever made. The early '70s was a particularly lousy time for pop music, and Sinatra's tackling such abominations as "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" and "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" was just not a smart move. He did the best he could given the material, but as the old saying goes, you can't make chicken salad out of chicken s***.

"If" is definitely my favorite from that CD. I think I like his version better than the original artist.

My least favorite is "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". I thought Frank did a much better version at the 1974 MSG concert. It was definitely much more thrilling live than studio.

Joey,

Some songs done by FS definitely seem more exciting live, like Mack the Knife & NY, NY. I just think you feel the electricity of certain songs live versus in-studio recordings.

Dennis,

You are correct. Especially during the last 25 years of his career, he just had a way of infusing an electricity into much of his music when he did it live. He seemed to find a way of adding another dimension to the music. Take the song "If" for example. I love his version on this album, but I like the version he did on his 80th birthday album even more.

Yes

'If' is one of my favourite Sinatra songs also.

But i prefer the version from the '80TH LIVE IN CONCERT' CD, than the version from this album.
