All artists make bizaa career choices. Mr Sinatra made a bizaar choice when he recorded Satisfy Me One More Time. No matter how you look at it, it was bizaar for the greatest voice in the world to lend his talent to this particular piece of music.

I still cannot get over how this album could contain the sublime "The Summer Knows" the majestic "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" and then also contain that song about a yellow ribbon.

I think this should have been one of the greats. Had Mr Sinatra recorded a few more songs from movies of the day, such as The Way We Were and A Star Is Born then this really could have been great.

Would also have liked Sinatra to have recorded "The Waters Of March" by Jobim. The best song he ever wrote.

"A stick a stone, it's the end of the road..." Great GREAT song.

Maybe FS simply thought of "Satisfy Me One More Time" as a fun song (I mean, also musically ) with that Jazzy arrangement.
At least he liked it well enough to revive it a few times in concert in spring 1983 (including a gala event at the Kennedy Center in Washington)... would be interesting to know how the immediate audience reaction was on these occasions.

Anyway I'm sure he knew pretty well what he was singing about

This was the first Sinatra record I ever heard... My Dad played it all the time when it first came out, when I was a kid. I listened to it again a short while back, as part of the Reprise set, and was pleasantly reminded of how solid it is... Whatever one may think of the song choices, Sinatra's voice is strong and confident, full of life. He sounds happy to be singing.

Some of my favorite late period FS songs are from this album, "If" and "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life"...

Yes, "Sweet Caroline" is a Neil Diamond song, possibly his most famous. I'd personally rather listen to Neil sing it, but I'm glad you like Frank's version. I listen to it occasionally - it sounds like Frank was having fun while he recorded it.

Some Nice Things I've Missed

I am looking for some informed opinions about the SNTIM album. What style will I get with this? How do you experts like the album?
Thanks for any input.

Well, I just received my 2 order I did with my tax return last month!!! I got 7 Sinatra CD this morning and the first one I have put into my CD player was "SOME NICE THINGS I'VE MISSED"...

I was sweating... Scared... I read so mixed stuff about that album... I walked out of my house, with my walkman in my hand, lighted a small cigar and walked under that spring sun... I was quite tired, just back from work after a 12 hours shift of walking around... But I wanted to listen to some sample of that album before going to bed...

I finally got the courage to put on the "Play" button...

I first got moved by "You turned my world around"... Some of you may remember how crushed I was by my girlfriend who left me... Saturday, the 6th, I was supposed to get married with her and, well, it was hell for me all the week end, I just brought me in the same emotion that when she left me... "You turned my world around" got some peace inside of me...

"Sweet Caroline" made me forget about all the sadness of the last week end... It swing with the very unique Frank's way... I left myself float on that song...

"Summer Know"... I decided that I liked that album... And I also decided to report my going to bed for a little later... I got less tired of my week end and I felt the morning sun on my skin a little more...

"I'm gonna make it all the way"... Another song to remind me of my broken marriage... But in a funny way... I agree with the forum member who said that it is a sad song that put a smile on our face... It really got me to smile and I really liked that song...

"Tie a yellow...", well, nobody seem to like that song over here but I like it... It maybe not Shakespearian poetry but it swing and its a very dynamic song... And it brought me back to my high school because we played that song with the stage band...

"Satisfy me one more time"... Amazed... Very jazzy music, very unusual lyrics, and to be honest, I was walking in the street with my walkman and I exploded into laught a few time... I enjoyed it and I think that Frank did that song to make us smile... I like it... Great to help me to learn some more English!

"If"... I always loved that song that I known from the 80th anniversary live album... Great poetry, great music, and great great performance by Frank... My eyes got filled with tears and, despite of my lonelyness and my broken heart, I was glad to be alive just to ear that...

"You are the sunshine of my life", to take my tears from "If" away... Another great swing musical momen... Another song I always enjoyed, especially Frank way's... I can't stand the French version that was very popular over here few time ago...

"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown"... Another very dynamic song... I always enjoyed it... I often listened to it in my car, signing along with Frank... A song that make me sing...

"What are you doing the rest of your life"... A question that can't leave my mind for the last few month... And a return home for me after a finally quite long walk around my hometown... Great song to close the album, and great music to stik in my mind as I am going to bed...

Many of view expressed many different opinion about that album... Whatever what have been said, it will stay one of my favourite album, I am sure of it... I already copied it into tape to be able to listen to it in my car...

Thank you Mr Sinatra... Thank you for sharing all that stuff with me and the others fans... I have mixed emotions in my life, once again, a lots of pain, lonelynes, a hole inside my soul, and listening to your music is like talking with an old friend who understand me and know so well how to make me feel better and take all the dark clouds away...

What a great album

No one can console me like Frank does. He is so special. When I hurt he can make the hurt inside go away.

Fine review, Stephane.

***listening to [FS] music is like talking with an old friend who understand me***

There you go - that's the Sinatra secret, and his songs have done that for so many people in so many places of the world for so many years. And Sinatra music is the safest of bets, because it will stay with you (and within you) just as long as you please.

Keep the swing!

Bernhard.

"What are you doing the rest of your life"... As sure as the sun rises each day, Mr. Sinatra and his music is here for many reasons. The biggest one, I think, is that he's here for the lonely.

SOME NICE THINGS I'VE MISSED 1974 (Merged)

The song (originally recorded for a single on Dec.12, 1973) comes from the 1974 Reprise album Some Nice Things I've Missed.

I agree the guitars are a fine part here - and Sinatra had no less than four guitarists for company here: Alvin Casey, John Morell, James Burton, and his staple Al Viola.

This album has the reputation of being among Frank's most lesser works and yet it is still a good work. "If" and "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" are wonderful songs. The closest thing I can compare
"...Life" to is "Come Rain or Come Shine" from "Sinatra and Strings". Same kind of forcefulness to the end that can be best described as just manly. Stuff like even "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" are decen t because he just seems to be having a ball with it.

This album is a mixed bag, of that there is no doubt. As an album it is not perhaps one of my favourites but nevertheless, I do think that, individually, most of the tracks are excellent and I do enjoy them.

I also like "You Turned My World Around" and think it the best sounding track because on it FS sound at his smoothest and clearest. It was also a good tune. There is a rougher vocal sound to almost all the other tracks.

I like "Sweet Caroline" for its attack and pace. I agree with Duncan that it would be great if FS had recorded "Love On The Rocks".

The sad thing for me about this entire album is that Sinatra's change of voice occurred about this time and it is evidenced by this album when compared to "Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back" where FS still sounded smooth, powerful and clear and younger. On "SNTIM" there is more sand and a tiny bit of gravel as mentioned in the cover notes, as well as some hollowness and an overall older sounding voice. Its still a great voice and the phrasing and diction are first class but the sound is of an older singer almost throughout. For me, it marked the beginning of the end.

There never was an "end" for his voice. It evolved over time and never lost its hitting power in my mind.

"What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" is still one of his most killer performances.
