Great album... no not just great, probably his greatest!
Small corrections: The album is from 1955 not 1953, and "Last Night When We Were Young" is not a "bonus track", but was part of the original album released in April 1955. This was Frank Sinatras first 12" LP release. **ADDED July 4: The things I mentioned have been corrected, I was responding to an earlier version of Rick's posting. BV.*** Bernhard. |

I thought you were doing so - a very good idea indeed! Sunday morning over here and I got to log out now, but I will provide any further info necessary/requested as threads evolve. Fine work!
Do you realise you're doing Capitol's work here? They still have to do an easy-to-access album-by-album page on their Sinatra catalogue! ![]() Bernhard. |

Definitely one of Frank's finest if not THE finest Sinatra album..I know that's Nancy's opinion. Wonderful singing, superb interpretation, effective but not intrusive arrangements and, in my opinion, with the exception of "Deep in a Dream", all excellent and I do mean excellent songs, thoughtfully sequenced and produced. The addition of a few songs with just celeste and rhythm is a wonderful decision...something that might have helped later ballad albums. Even as old as it is, this album hits you right between the eyes with its beauty.
(As far as "Deep in a Dream" , I'm not trashing the song..it's just outclassed by its neighbors.) |

Yes it does... and also and foremost, it hits you with its timeless CLASS. As far as I am concerned, there is no debate that this is Francis Albert Sinatra's all-time finest effort on a studio record. The interpretative depth he goes for in the songs of this album remains unmatched. As I see it, unmatched even by The Voice himself. Ok ok yeah yeah I know, opinions opinions... but I stand by my judgement. Anybody wanna fight??? ![]() Bernhard. |

A friend who's just turning on to Sinatra bought this as his first FS CD and he's hooked.
Now he wants more of the same...do I tell him it's all downhill from here?!!!!

Bernhard, I agree
Frank made many great albums, but none are quite on this level. It seems that the only consideration was the quality of the singing and the backing. Commercial considerations and marketing were secondary.
Also, in '55, Sinatra's great comeback was still new and his artistry as a singer and an actor were at its peak. It was his third Capitol album to be followed by Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Close to You and Swingin' Affair plus the singles compilation, This is Sinatra. All were with Riddle. Ed S. |

Can I state the obvious?
The information and contributions contained on this page are nothing less than marvelous!
As a longtime fan, it's great to be able to put some of my favorite FS recordings into some sort of historical perspective. A tip of the hat to ALL who have contributed their time and knowledge here!

Wow!
As I really prefer FAS's Reprise recordings to any of his others, I had not even considered this album. Then I found this thread, and figured that I couldn't go wrong. I was right. This is now one of my favorite albums. The emotion in his voice is overwhelming. Is it just me, or on 'Can't We Be Friends?' does he sound like he is crying right after the end of the bridge? I heard that sharp intake of breath and his voice wavered. Maybe I'm just imagining things! Anyway, this is an awesome album. Thanks for persuading me to buy it!

My only comment on his album is every song is equally as good. It's awesome. Such emotion! Riddle's arrangements are superb. This album, like many other of Frank's albums, should have sold at least ten million. I do not exaggerate. A true work of art.

Wee Small Hours
This album is really what hooked me on Sinatra (See the post entitled "How and When did you get into Frank Sinatra ? ")
I had moved to Connecticut with my girlfriend to be a courier for one of the delivery companies. Anyway, we decided to come back to Memphis and a finish our college degrees. We did not have the money to live together so she moved back home and I moved in with my best friend. This album kept me company on many lonely nights. I would sit on our balcony and get myself a glass of bourbon, and listen to this album. It would always make me feel better to have Frank telling me that it was okay to feel the way I was feeling (if you know what I mean ).

What a cd to play whilst just getting into bed at night.
Some of my most memorable listening experiences have been to listen to this album whilst sitting on my balcony whilst on holiday looking out at the sea with no-one but a glass of JD for company. Magical stuff. Adam

What more can I say about this album that hasn't been said already, except to say that it is absolute perfection. Every single song on here.

I was going to comment on Can't We Be Friends?, then I re-read this thread and saw Chris' comments. He stole the words right out of my keyboard.
I had a long drive home late last night, so I brought this CD with me. Every time I hear the 3rd chorus, right after the bridge, my heart jumps. Frank sounds like he is breaking down! His voice is so fragile, especially on the word "bust". Magical...... In my very humble opinion, no other single album in his canon can match this one. Every song is perfect..... Greg |
