Next boxset for me will the Reprise set, though will wait for a bit as I expect the price to drop somewhat. |

I have just seen this on he HMV UK site.
It does not state whether it is region 2 or just them selling the region 1 version for £49.99 very odd. http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProduct...1;6&sku=413251

The only version is the US version, so you can safely assume its the US region code. As explained before though, making DVD players multi region is very very simple, at least on UK players rendering region codes irrelevant.

You're welcome, George. The lists on this page make it easier to search for TV performances of particular songs.

Quote:
The audio on the first two discs (at least) is AC3, which is a compressed format (192 Kbps). That is NOT as good as the original Warner/Reprise "black box" DVDs (or the bonus disc in the big new UMG box set), which are LPCM uncompressed 16-bit stereo (1536 Kbps). Sorry for the geek-speak, but the difference is akin to that between MP3 files and CD-quality audio. I haven't had the time to do a full examination of the audio (or video) on all of these DVDs, but at least for the first couple in the set, the sound quality does not measure up favorably to that of the other editions. |

Were the Black Boxed DVD's identical sounding to the slightly later grey sleeved ones? (such as in the Life in Performance boxes) they're the ones I had before, rather than the black ones.

If by "grey sleeved ones" you mean the European Region 2 PAL versions, I couldn't tell you, Nick. I never bought any of those, as they won't play on my American NTSC equipment.
However, I remember reading complaints about the audio on those. I notice that UMG has gone to great lengths to advertise that the AMAHM Trilogy in its new box set has been "remastered" in LPCM uncompressed stereo. That might just mean that they are now offering the same quality that we always had in those black box editions here in the States. |

Fair enough, still don't think I'll be hunting down the black boxes, I have all this several times already. Personally speaking I think they sound alright, age permitting.

All that matters is how they sound to YOUR ears on YOUR system. FX thought the sound is great, and that's fine. I'm just pointing out a difference which is quantitative and measurable. Subjective opinions vary, but I know that the difference matters to audiophiles. (Gonzo, where are you?

I think the DVD in the UMG box set (first three AMAHM shows only) sounds more realistic. YMMV

I'm going to amend my opinion: After flipping back and forth between three different versions, I think there has been a definite color improvement in the new releases in comparison to the original Warner Reprise Video issues (North American releases in black cases). At least in the first A Man and His Music program, the flesh tones are better; Sinatra's face has lost some of its slightly purple hue.
