Hi ...I have this video and I love it...for THREE reasons...JUDY, FRANK AND DEAN....This is such a special video for me...Being a fan of all three, it was so neat that they performed together...I especially love Frank's song "I see yourself before me"..precious...To anyone who doesn't have this collection, it is a must...Three legends in one precious video...Amy

For me this is a very poignant show, the trials of her life were so apparent on Judy's face, yet still the trooper she was her solo routine at the end of the show is so emotionally charged and the performance is wonderful to behold. I love this show also for the duet arrangement of Dean & Frank singing The One I Love, my personal favourite of all the versions of this song.

I have this on DVD from HMV about three years ago. I also have a VHS recording from TV somewhere and I somehow think the quality on that recording was perhaps better - I will have to check.

I watched Once In A Lifetime again today. Anyone else see it? I love this show. Frank and Dean were as charming as ever. It really made my day to watch them. And Judy... man, that voice! Blows me away each time I hear her. This is really a fantastic special that I hope everyone gets a chance to see.

The Judy Garland Show
I believe that this special was a sort of "pilot" for the CBS Judy Garland show which sadly ran only one season.
The "pilot" episode finds FS in really fine form on Too Marvelous For Words, and the balance of the show, including Dean Martin's appearance really only served to draw attention to the fact that Judy, who had been absent from the screen since A Star Is Born except for one tune in Pepe (unseen) - could still perform, and more importantly;draw an audience. The first show was done in B&W although I have seen a colourized version, and all the balance were also B&W, a problem as the competition was Bonanza in living colour. There were numerous guest stars, but usually the best shows featured just Judy in concert. One classic moment came when Barbra Streisand appeared and did a duet with Judy singing Get Happy, as Barbra sang alternate lines of Happy Days are here again. They were then joined by an unbilled Ethel Merman; effectively placing three generations of belters on the stage at the same time. All these shows turn up from time to time on PBS or Canadian Bravo, but I don't believe there is an authorized version of the FS one for sale. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this last part. and BTW, Mel Torme, who worked on the later shows; wrote a book about his experiences titled "The Other Side of the Rainbow" I, personally, have never read it as I try to avoid any material which might tend to change my perception of a performer, and MY JUDY will always be the little girl I saw at the age of 5 in the 1952 re-issue of the Wizard of Oz.

I love this dvd it's great. Frank looked great and sounded great his rendition of " I see your face before me" was something so beautiful and touching. I noticed Frank's eyes to be particularly bright blue that evening
He looked like he truly was enjoying himself. I also liked Dean's version of " You must have been a beautiful baby". When they all sang " You're nobody till somebody loves you" it was fun to watch and Judy was in great vocal form that nigh like in her version of " the man who got away".Melissa |

I have a marvelous Judy Garland DVD, titled "Judy Garland Show-Legends" and it's 150 minutes of pure gold culled from her '63-64 TV show. She sings solo and also duets with among others, Mel Torme, Jack Jones, Ethel Merman and Streisand, Liza, Mickey Rooney,Count Basie, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Lena Horne, Vic Damone and Martha Raye
Pioneer Artists 11690 is the catalogue info.

Its a great show and all were in top form but Judy herself was magnificent. I have it on a DVD which is disappointing in quality but I had seen it on a TV channel some years back in colour and in good condition.

Wonderful show. I taped it the first time it was on A&E. Judy, Frank and Dean all have a great time here.

The merge seems to have changed the thread ID, thereby breaking the link in the sticky index posting.
(Sorry, I see that merge was done a long time ago. So this is simply a reminder to fix the broken link in the index.) |

Overall very exciting stuff on this show, always a joy to watch it again. While the VHS produced & released by Sid Luft is colorised, I actually prefer the original black&white-"looks", so usually turn off the colors when watching.
Small trivia - Sinatra's solo performance of "Too Marvelous For Words" has one lyrical fluff in it ("...too marvelous to words"), which obviously they left in because the performance in general was so good a take (I don't think the mistake escaped Sinatra's ever-so-perfect ear). Or should one "rescue" that line by interpreting what Sinatra sings as: "Too marvelous: Two words!" ? ![]() Bernhard. Last edited by bvo35; 05-12-2006 at 03:39 PM. |
