It's one of Frank's best TV specials... he sounds great and the song selection is nice. This show and A Man And His Music Part II are my favorite FS TV specials.

II? There's a II? Me and the boys are hitting the town today... I will be hunting that one down! Thanks, Allen!

There were 13 titles released on VHS and DVD by Warner Reprise Video, of which nine are available on DVD in the US, including A Man And His Music Part II. See that part of my index: Televised Specials and Concerts on DVD/VHS Video.

Mark: They're all in the black boxes with the red Sinatra signature on the covers. I doubt you'll find them easily on store shelves today, though.

A Man and His Music.... I'd Forgotten

It's been more years than I can remember since I've seen this amazing special and it moved me just as it did the first time I saw it.

I was taken back in time and felt 17 again. Yeah..... I was 17 in 65... and it was a Very Good Year...... LOL...

I can only than the Sinatra Family for being so instrumental in this amazing tribute for all of us to gather into ourselves.

Once in a lifetime.
Hugs,
D

Well, I was one and a half in 65 when this first aired.

Obviously I don't remember it, but my dad told me last night (when I called him to tell him it was on) that he remembers watching it. I remember a lot of the variety shows from the late 60s through the middle of the 70s, but not this one. So glad this one is on DVD... and now on TV.

Technical question on this one, if I may... In some of the songs, Frank is holding the mic, but in others, it's on a stand and he is pretty far away from it. It's my assumption that there a boom mic that is capturing his vocals for those numbers... am I correct?

Also, it sounds like canned laughter... was there a live studio audience?

Mark, I believe there was a live audience for part or all of the taping. Some of the response was from them. There was also quite a bit of obvious canned response added to the production. Great show that holds up quite well. Osborne's comments are always welcome on the TCM movies and on this Sinatra event. The appearances of Nancy and Tina are great and add to enjoyment. I understand that Frank Jr. will also be on hand during May.

One correction: Osborne mentioned more than once that this 1965 special was one of three annual NBC TV Sinatra Specials. Actually it is one of five. I believe they were broadcast in November each year, 1965 - 1969. TCM will run the first three during May.

The 1967 program with Frank, Ella Fitzgerald, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Frank's killer performance of Ol' Man River may be the best hour of music ever seen on television. It's coming up later this month.

Edwin...I believe the entire show was shot with a laugh and applause track. There was no audience other than special friends of Frank and the network. The canned laughter and applause are the only two negatives I can take from the show as the rest of it is just FUN!!!

You could hear the cold in his throat. But Sinatra with a cold is better than anybody else's "A" game. The man was so good that he even cleared his throat on the air and we were witnesses to a god acting human. He just had to clear his throat...she he did....take that you rock and rollers.

I loved being able to see this last night. Nick sat with me through most of it and really enjoyed "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)."

It's clear that Frank loved his little girl very much

Thanks for the clarification, Rick. Perhpas there was an audience at some of the later NBC specials. I seem to remember seeing people in the background. Is that so?

I wish somebody could do something like this today but The times are over. Everything is to expensive and the worst thing is that there never will be someone like Frank, entertainer, singer, moviestar in one word fantastic.

I am very thankfull that we are able to see this special today to get an image how he must have been in person.

I saw A Man And His Music when I got home from work at 11pm. It really turned a bad weekend into a great one. I was smiling the whole time I watch it.

Thanks to The Sinatra's and TCM.

My four-year-old granddaughter has a toy microphone and a floor stand... it really works, has its own speaker and all... and she loves to croon. So I ordered AMAHM for her.

If you hear sweet Caroline (!) fifteen years from now on American Idol singing the standards, that's my girl!
