The Best Musical TV Show

I agree with those posters who said this was television's finest musical program...period. I still have yet to purchase the dvd, but it is on my "must have" list and discussing it here in this forum makes me impatient to go ahead and order it.

First of all, it is such a pleasure to see the man as well as listen to him. I never got to see him in concert, so these tv specials are the closest I can get to experiencing the magic that went on between FAS and an audience (lucky people who go to sit in the tv audience!)

Secondly, this program is very special for having first exposed me to Frank's masterful collaboration with Jobim. I was so touched and impressed by the simplicity, sophistication and beauty of their songs together.

And of course, FAS with the "First Lady of Song" is something that just doesn't happen often...how sad they did not go through with plans to record together.

Ahh... Ella!

I think the memory that lingers with this show is the look of pure adulation Frank has when he's sitting during an Ella part of the live medley with the audience in the round.

Tonight on WNET Thirteen

If you're in the NY Metro area or anywhere where you can pick up Channel Thirteen, you may be interested in this.

"Sinatra + Ella + Jobim" tonight, July 14th, at 9PM on WNET Thirteen.

My former employer, by the way.

The PBS stations in the greater NYC area have broadcast this show and the many other Sinatra specials quite a few times during the year. They especially like to run it during membership drives.

I watch them each time they're on and last night was no exception. His "Going Out of My Head" duet with Ella is truly two great artists performing a wonderful song and enjoying the talents of one another.

Frank & Ella & Jobim

What more can I add ? This show was an absolute "Tour de Force" for Frank and amplifies his musical versatility. I play this show repeatedly...Why can't we have this stuff anymore ? What went wrong with the world ?

I happened to catch this last night on my local PBS station and i'm glad because I wasn't sure weather to buy it or not. The descison is yes, of course. This is a fine TV Special, the second of Frank's I've seen (The First Being "Ol Blue Eyes is Back") and it's magnificently solid. Frank and Ella blend together marvelously and the respect Frank gives her, letting her go, not demanding the spotlight through the whole special. But the real high point is Frank and Antonio Carlos Jobim and their Bossa Nova Melody. A great moment and it's great to see Frank sing. It's always fun to see his facial features as he sings. You see things there and notice that he's acting out the song and not only belting it out but bringing emotion into the tunes.

DVD/VHS The Man and His Music + Ella + Jobim 1967

I have to agree with Hannah, it doesn't get any better than this. This is my all time favorite (Man and His Music Show).
NOTHING is better than Frank and Ella singing "Lady is a Tramp" and the opening number of "Day In Day Out" is a killer. I watch it as often as I can. Absolutely love it.

I can't wait to get this dvd, I order it along with Barbra Streisand's - The Concert (Live at the MGM Grand) on Amazon. I am slowly building up my collection of everything to do with Frank.

I have got to order this DVD, as I am very curious to see it. Both Ella and Jobim are great.

I have in my collection, The Man and His Music with Count Basie's Orchestra. And I have ordered The Man and His Music with Nancy Sinatra from Amazon. I got an email today from them telling my that it is out for delivery. Can't wait to see this one...
