Man & His Music - '65 Concert

Sinatra at his finest hour. Cool, relaxed. If you never heard any of FS material live, this is the place to start. A really great mix of songs. He warms you up with I've Got You Under My Skin and then a wonderful version of Without A Song. By the time he get to Don't Worry About Me, I'm all eyes & ears. He's got my complete attention. And the way he sings Nancy. So, so moving.

You're saying to yourself, can I get any better than this? It does, if that's possible. Starts off with when I was 17, then he goes to Young At Heart, back to when I was 21, then sings The Girl Next Door, back to when I was 35, then sings Last Night When We Were Young, back to And Now the Days Are Short-- and finally we hear This Is All I Ask and then he hits that note --And let the music play. I could listen to that medely over and over. It's so unique. Only appears on this live performance.

And then he finishes off the show with the greatest standards, Come Fly With Me; The Lady Is a Tramp; I Got the World On a String; Witchcraft; You Make Me Feel So Young and then Put Your Dreams Away.

All I can say is I never seen an hour go by that fast. It's so easy to understand why he was called the Chairman of the Board. It is definitely not an over-statement. I wish I had 100 more live performances like this.

I just hope more live material gets released.

Great Listening,

Dennis

Man & His Music - 1966, with Nancy

I enjoyed this performance just as much as Part I a year earlier. Frank was in truly great voice for this show, and we really got a treat with Nancy appearing with him. I must admit, however, that sometimes I find it a little too emotional to watch this show. It's a great show & all, but I think you know what I mean.

FS starts off with a great opener of Fly Me To The Moon, then follows with the Most Beautiful Girl In the World. (Real lively version and fast)

Moonlight In Vermont & You're Nobdoy Till Somebody Loves You. Really a treat to hear thos two songs done live.

Then Nancy performed a very touching version of Bang, Bang. Excellent. And she also sounded great & looked great with On Broadway. A good choice of songs.

Nancy & Frank did a nice medely together and just palled around together. A lot of fun.

Frank also did a terrific version of Granada. I don't remember ever hearing that song done outside of the album.

This show is definitely a must for any FS fan & Nancy. Fifty-two minutes go by like nothing.

Bernhard,

Thanks so much again for the info on Granata. I never realized it was done as many times as it was. After hearing the amount of times that it was done live, it definitely proves that there is such a need to release so many of the other concerts that are in the vaults. Must be so much material that we haven't heard done live before.

I am a big fan of a Man and His Music Part 2. My favorite rendition of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You." It is also always a pleasure to hear a live recording of "That's Life." I love the way Frank belts out the line "But if there's nothing shaking, come this here July."

Ah, What Wonderful Moments in Time

Man & His Music - 1965 and Part II, 1966. Ah, such a wonderful time for me. I was 13 & 14 when these two shows first aired. I remember watching both of them with my grandmother. How safe & secure life seemed for me back then. Of course, I didn't have nearly the appreciation then for these true gems that I do now. However, whenever I watch these two shows, it brings me back to when I was 13 again and life was so much simpler. Boy, do I wish I had a time machine just to go back to these moments again. Life was good then. Too bad back then I didn't know how good it was.

Rather than repeat myself from previous threads on these shows, I'll just say that these shows represent some of the greatest performing I have ever witnessed. And believe me, I do not say this lightly. I really feel that way. Now, I think I'm going to go watch one of them now.

A Man And His Music Part II - DVD/Video

Hi guys,

I just been browsing amazon and noticed this review for "The Man And His Music Part II" DVD and Video.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000K3V1/ref=ase_theclinteastw-20/103-5992090-5376661?v=glance&s=dvd

I don't know if anyone has noticed this before or posted it here but I found it very interesting.

I wonder if it really is the guy who wrote the song?

That's Life, December 1, 2000 Reviewer: Dean Kay from Burbank, CA USA

This is the show that introduced That's Life to the world. I wrote That's Life. Perhaps of some historical interest, this show was taped before the phonograph record was made. The musical arrangement used on the show is by Nelson Riddle. This arrangment that was originally intended for use on the record but was replaced by Ernie Freeman's now classic arrangement when the record was made just a few days before this show aired. Actually, Sinatra did attempt to make the record featuring the Riddle arrangement while he was in England making a film but the attempt failed. Pre recorded tracks were shipped London and Sinatra tried to add his vocals; but, he always preferred recording with a live orchestra and was unhappy with the results of performing to tracks. The recording was ash canned...although it still may be somewhere in the Warner Bros vaults. For now, the only place to hear the arrangement originally intended for use on the recorded version of That's Life is on this video.

I also love the duets between Frank and Nancy. The rendition of Downtown is very entertaining.

bump

bumping for JamesDeFrances.

I think the TV version of "That's Life" was taped before the record version.
Read my last post above.

I still worry about Frank jumping "up & down" on that circular stage during "My Kind Of Town" every time I watch this.

Have these dates been confirmed against the now famous Reprise Recording?

Jeff, I believe they have.

A Question regarding all of the Warner-Reprise specials:

Were there any songs recorded for these tv-specials that were cut from the shows that aired, therefore not able to make it to dvds?

Also, did Frank record Just one of those things in the studio a short time before this tv special? I know it doesn't appear on any Reprise albums but it is played over that saloon song medley.

"just one of those things"

i just adore the 1966 version of "just one of those things"! i think frank recorded this in the studio exclusively for use in the tv special. i don't know if he did the song in one take, or just sang the parts separately, as they were used in the special.

anyway, i think the song is complete, if one combines those parts.

this would make a helluva record!

Hi Steffen, it seems he did it in "one take" i.e. not splitting it when recording, but more than one take until the final master was in the can as used for the Saloon segment. I agree it certainly is a beautiful version, and a great new arrangement by Gordon Jenkins as well.

if it was done in one take in a professional recording studio (and not as a sound stage recording), then it deserves the label of "studio recording" and belongs on the complete reprise masters suitcase.

*** Were there any songs recorded for these tv-specials that were cut from the shows that aired, therefore not able to make it to dvds? **

Sorry James, I didn't see that question of yours from a month back.

There obviously were some, yes, while I don't know in each case whether the song was already dropped during rehearsal, or really filmed & mastered and dropped only when the final broadcast was made. I am not aware of any research published yet based on examination of recording sheets, programme lists etc. regarding the studio-made TV specials, so there are still a lot of ??-marks here. But it might be in all of these cases that clipped footage still survives in the vaults of the company.

For the TV live concerts included in the VHS/DVD-series, the picture is much clearer regarding the missing tracks.

On the Nov 25, 1965 "A Man And His Music" special (CBS), "Learning The Blues" was scheduled, to a Nelson Riddle arrangement, but not included.

On the Nov 5, 1969 "Sinatra" special (CBS), the first planning was that Sinatra would open the show with "Mrs Robinson", but it was cut from the broadcast.

On the VHS and DVD of the Nov 16, 1970 London Concert, one song is missing: "A Foggy Day", which was performed between "One For My Baby" and "I Will Drink The Wine". The original BBC broadcast of the concert included the song (as did later re-broadcasts over the BBC), but there were also re-broadcasts that cut some of the songs. Obviously the VHS=DVD comes from such an edited master tape.

The Oct 18, 1973 "Ol'Blue Eyes Is Back" special (CBS) misses "Come Fly With Me", which FS performed during the audience parts, according to some members of that audience.

The Dec 12, 1979 "First 40 Years" bash is complete as far as Sinatra's singing parts is concerned, but lacks almost 40 minutes of the other guest stars' appearances, including the long medley performed by Nancy and Frank jr. (see the thread for a recent discussion of this).

The April 18, 1985 Tokio concert ("Sinatra In Japan") misses quite a lot of songs, unfortunately, that had been included in the original Japanese broadcast: These are: The first three, i.e. Where Or When, Fly Me To The Moon (missing only on Warner-Braveworld VHS) and Autumn Leaves, plus This Is All I Ask (preceeding My Kind Of Town), Here's That Rainy Day (preceeding Mack The Knife), Tony Mottola's guitar solo 'Concerto de Aranjuez' plus FS-Mottola duet on My Funny Valentine (preceeding LA Is My Lady).

That's all info I have on that topic, with the aforementioned caveat.

Bernhard...you seem to be the resident Sinatra expert around here :
Did Frank ever record the The Most Beautiful Girl in the World (swingy version) as he sang it on A Man and His Music '66? If so where can I get it?
I thought it was great!! If he did'nt he should have!

Rose

Ps. The saloon song segment was the best btw with him sitting in that orange chair looking so pensive and melencholy...and the songs had to have been hand picked by the Chairman.Perfection personified!!!
