I remember those drives. Big sky, open air. Very nice.

I'm not sure it's Lobelia Maureen, I thought at first it was some sort of Japonica - I have read there is an APP that will identify a plant or flower, just by taking a photo, a bit like SHAZAM I suppose but using an image, I think it's called " Flora" or something.

Remember, we're talking the low desert in the southwestern United States. If you try to search for photos (I think I've covered them all!), you'll want to limit it to this climate.

Nancy, your photos of the mountains and the sunset are wonderful. I visited Palm Springs in 1998 and, one thing that still stands out in my memory is that blue, cloudless sky surrounded by the beautiful mountains.

When I was a little girl one of the big "attractions" was the angel in the mountain. It has practically disappeared and nobody even talks about it anymore when there used to be postcards of it in every gift shop along Palm Canyon Drive.

After decades of the mountain shifting, squishing her a little, and changes in the residential landscape, she is still there though hidden away and hard to find. She is almost a shadow of her former self.

For me this is new. Your desert is a not desert, but a "greenhouse"!

Irene - Before I came to California I always thought of a desert as looking like the Sahara. Then I quickly found out about the California desert.

Lovely photos of your flowers, Ace. I had a red hot poker plant in my flower garden but, I took it out. It wasn't nearly as nice as yours. Just a lot of green and too few pokers.

Here are some pictures I took of the desert a few years ago. These are taken in Palm Springs near the Tram.

These were taken at the base of Mt. San Jacinto in a valley sacred to the Cahuillan Indians. The wild grape vine (last pic) covers a stream of precious fresh water, rare in the desert. The climactic shift from the top of Mt. San Jacinto to the base of the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs) is the most dramatic shift in North America. Going from the top of the mountain to the base is like going from Juno, Alaska to Baja, California!!!
