What an AMAZING collection of photographs. Thank you so much Marjorie for sharing this great link with us. It truly is a treasure trove. Amazes me to see that the Manhattan skyline pretty much looked the same as today as early as the 1930s... (without the flat-top buildings, of course).

Wow...thank you Marjorie, what a great find. There's a photo in"Carroll Gardens" the next block over from where I was born. (2nd Place) I can't wait to explore it all.

check out "Old Queens, NY": www.queenstribune.com/best2002/oldphotos.htm btw, Arcadia Publishing and Dover Publishing have many books with loads of old photos of cities and towns. You can google both companies for more information. OK, here is a link where you can search for a book on your hometown. www.arcadiapublishing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc

There should be more Jacob Riises and Jack Neufields.
It's disconcerting that every decade or so, so many buildings are replaced by new ones. I have no idea what the original Waldorf Astoria looked like before the Empire State Building took its place. Jackie O did her bit to try to save Penn Station, but the new MSG took its place.

Wow, Marjorie, great links! I found a picture of the neighborhood where I grew up, as it looked in 1928. What is so interesting to me is that 1928 is right around the time that my mother emigrated here from Ireland. I can only imagine how overwhelming such a scene was to her.

Wow! And that building to the right of the screen in that picture is now New York's SGI World Culture Center. I was there almost twice a week while I was in NYC.

There are really nice photos of liners visiting New York in the 20th century.
Here's the SS America (United States Line)

The Normandie. The one of the most beauitiful liners ever built. Arriving in New York in the mid 1930s.
