The Grifters Stephen Frears' beautifully realised neo-noir that like the film itself has more than meets the eye. This tale of three small time con-artists is layered with Freudian overtones and twist upon twist contains three of Hollywood's finest modern performances in Anjelica Huston, John Cusack and Annette Bening. Frears' noir influences find themselves realised with stunning lighting, snappy dialogue and an almost Runyonesque sensibility that is very satisfying.

We watched 2 very good movies last night. One was The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke, and Frost/Nixon. 2 very well directed and produced movies that should not be missed.

Make sure when the Wrestler ends, you stick around and listen to the Springsteen track playing with the credits. Beautiful song.

Yes I did hear the Springsteen song and it was great. I am a big fan of Bruce, and it was a very appropriate song for the end of the movie.

I was going to say too that I really did not like the ending of The Wrestler at all. The movie was excellent up until the last 2 or 3 minutes. I really thought they could have been a little more imaginative to think of a better ending for the movie. I was not happy with the ending. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I don't want to ruin the ending for anyone but I agree 100 percent. It was like, Here's this great movie and now............. OVER. Just like that.

I mean the movie was only 109 minutes and if they made the movie 120 minutes or even 115 minutes, they could have written in a much better ending. Very disappointing.

Melanie, I saw Bottle Shock and it sucked big time, in my opinion! On the back of the DVD and in some of the reviews they said it was like SIDEWAYS which is why I rented it to begin with. I really wonder what drugs they were on when they wrote this because SIDEWAYS is the best wine movie ever made in my opinion and Bottle Shock was not only horrible but the acting, directing, story and production were horrible, how they can compare this movie to Sideways is quite a catastrophe. Bottle Shock should never have been made!

Richard, let us know what you think of The Wrestler after you watch it please. I thought it was excellent in every way, shape and form except for the ending.
I saw The Day The Earth Stood Still and it was ok, not a great movie at all, but entertaining none the less.

My Sunday movie friends liked Bottle Shock

I'll post again after I watched it.

I'm going to see The Wrester. I'm the orginal go to the movies person. The surgery got me into watching movies at home, so my new movies thread lies dormant. I need t revive it. I'm beginning to be as hooked on watching movies at home as I used to be on being in the theatre.

When I quite eating popcorn and drinking Coke, going to the movies was not as exciting.

Suggestion For Melanie

Melanie, if you have not yet done so, please rent Sideways. This movie is a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

Too many to mention -
The Reader - very interesting movie
Get Shorty- fun movie based on an Elmore Leonard book
Be Cool - sequal to Get Shorty..... the book was so much better
Tiny Toon Adventures, Season 1, Part 2- As much fun as I remember
Blue Thunder- classic 80's action flick, it was almost as good as I remembered
The Sting- Classic

between DVD's and TCM and cable I've seen a ton of movies. I need to go to work or something.

"The Big Sleep" - - A Golden Oldie

Bogey at his best; Bacall at her sultriest; Howard Hawks' direction endlessly fascinating; and an 'impossible-to-follow' script, co-written by Nobel Prize Winner, William Faulkner. EVERYTHING WORKS!
If you've never seen it, you're in for a special treat!

I watched Frost/Nixon yesterday and thought it was a very good film. I've seen parts of the real interview and it was interesting to see a behind the scenes look at it and how both sides planned for the interview. Langella was excellent as Nixon.

The Last Samurai Although a very watchable film, most notably for its beautiful locations and carefully considered cinematography, The Last Samurai bears too much resemblance to other big star "epic" projects of recent years to be considered anything but a reasonably pleasant waste of a couple of hours.

I must admit to being a fan of Tom Cruise's wide eyed acting style, okay he isn't the best actor in Hollywood, but he' not the worst by a long chalk either and I think his roles tend to suffer because the outside baggage of the man tend to be transposed to the roles he plays, but he does lend an air of believability to the jaded US cavalry officer, his excitable demeanour fitting well with his character's alcoholism at the start, as the character progresses however he does tend to fall into cliche. Happily though, for the film, Cruise's more over the top style is nicely balanced in true Zen style by the talented Ken Watanabe who brings the right air of reserved dignity and authenticity to the Samurai cheiftan.

An interesting mix of the Dances With Wolves and Braveheart school of Hollywood liberty taking, not entirely unsatisfying to be sure, but not a classic either.

Bottle Shock

I thought it was fun, especially with the hippy theme and soundtrack. The prodigal son and his dreamin' dad, the vineyard workers, the British wine taster. I loved these characters and enjoyed the movie and the little history of the success of California wines. I did like Sideways but in a very different way.

Yes, I love it too, Miss Mellie. My favorite of last year.

Great review, Marty. You really could write for magazines.
