Mr. Brooks
Interesting idea. I don't know, in this case I think I would opt for the abortion. And is it possible to feel sorry for a serial killer? I liked the ending before the ending better than the ending. Kevin Costner was Kevin Costner, William Hurt was good, I enjoyed him. The Demi Moore part was a movie within a movie and kind of distracting. |

Movies, neither old nor new
Last night I saw Pleasantville on TV (1998). This was a very likeable movie; although it exaggerated differences between the 50s and 90s. Reese Witherspoon, Tobey Maguire, and Jane Kazmarek seemed very real. (Jane was Malcolm in the Middle's mother role in that sitcom).
While the theme isn't all that imaginative or original, I really enjoyed this a lot more than the average run-of-the-mill American Graffiti clichés.

My daughter and I just saw MARIE ANTOINETTE and REIGN OVER ME
Enjoyed both.
MARIE ANTOINETTE is a visual delight filmed at Versailles. The elegant gaudiness is the real thing, and Kirstun Dunst and Jason Schwartzman are too. Director Sophia Coppola creates a world of a decadent court where life can be difficult for all, especially for the delicate flower Marie, raised in the more relaxed atmosphere of royal life in Austria. Coppola presents Marie as a girl who loses her way but finds it again it again in loyalty to her husband. Rereading the history of the two makes the movie much more interesting. Kirstun Dunst is simple, charming beauty. I loved looking at her. REIGN OVER ME shows Adam Sandler at his best dramatically after the terrible CLICK. How can he go wrong with one of the best dramatic actors of our time, Don Cheadle, as co-star. There were times the movie wasn't quite believable, but generally it made me remember the heartbreak of 9/11 families and others who have lost their families through tragegies. A little moral: People grieve best in their own time, with the support of friends and the RIGHT therapist. I hope we can continue to discuss movies at theatres now and upcoming ones at NEW MOVIES. I really enjoy the distinction between DVDS (or cable) and the theatre. If Marty and I have a Hatfield/McCoy feud he will surely win. I know he's the movie man.

La Vie en Rose.
In my humble opinion, this movie about Edith Piaf's life is wonderful. Marion Cotillard briliantly incarnates Edith Piaf and show that her life, since her childhood, wasn't "en Rose" at all. It's not the movie to watch and go out after for a good time. It will stay with you in your mind for a long time. Highly recommended.

I adore it, Jerry.
I posted it about in on NEW MOVIES when it first came out. I think I'd like to have the DVD.

I guess I have the dissenting vote here. I thought La Vie En Rose was too dark and I'm not talking about the content, the filming, it was hard to see what was going on. Maybe in the theaters it looked better. I also didn't like how it kept jumping around in time, it reminded me of a good book that when turned into film, was jumbled with some of the important parts missing losing consistency in the story. I think it is an interesting story that could have been handled better.

Ahh, Susan
I was so enchanted with learning about Edith Piaf's life and music that I couldn't have seen the flaws. I did see it in the darkness of a quaint theatre though.

Christmas present
a good friend made a DVD of Robin's wedding and we watched it most of the afternoon. Seeing some of the people we love that have passed away that attended the wedding gave us a time with them again.

Watched THE HOLIDAY again
this time with my daughter. Liked even better this time. Somewhere I posted about this one with Jack Black, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, and Kate Winslett. Very romantic. I was sure it was written by a woman. We checked and it was. Men don't do some of the things men in this movie do; well at least not for the most part.

Dear Friend Susan.
I've also noticed that most of the movies filmed in Europe are more dark than usual (even the superb cartoon "The Triplets of Belleville").
My dvd player have even an option to compansate this but I never used it. The most importnat part of Edith Piaf's life that was missing on the film was her importance on the French Resistance during World War II. But this would make the film too long. Maybe (I hope so) that one day they release a film about this period of her life. That the film is full of "flashbacks", is because it started with the end her too short life. It was more her rememberings of her own life at the end of her life. The greatest complain that I have on the dvd is that the extras are extremily too short. A Huge Kiss and Best Wishes from Your Friend, Jerry

Dear Great Friend Leatrice.
I also hope that Marion Cotillard gets an Oscar.
