My interview with Nancy :) Part 1
«These boots are made for walking» is to be heard in Oslo 10. August when Nancy Sinatra is ready for the Oya Festival. By TERRI KNUDSEN - I can’t wait, I’m so excited about this! I’ve never been in Norway before, so when I was asked to do a rock-festival there, I accepted. It will be a pleasure to see the country and my fans there, says Nancy, also known as the daughter of Frank Sinatra. Her new album, ”California Girl” was released in the USA in the end of April. It’s a concept album that was started in the end of the 60’s, but wasn’t finished until last year. Five-six new songs were recorded, among them a new version of “California Girls” with Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys on guest vocals. - I wanted all the songs on the album to have a feel of California. A lot of them have been favourites of mine through the years. I’ve always loved “Hotel California”, “California Girls” and “California Dreamin’”, she tells me. Acted with Elvis In her time she’s done seven movies, and among them are ”Speedway” with Elvis and ”The Wild Angels” with Peter Fonda. - Elvis was funny and charming, and we had many laughs together. It was a really nice experience. We were friends too, so that made it extra special. My best movie experiences was working with Elvis, riding the motorbikes with Peter Fonda and doing “Marriage On The Rocks” with my father. It’s funny how my three best experiences are so strongly connected with three of my favourite men, she laughs. Father and daughter Sinatra did three duets ogether: ”Somethin’ Stupid”, “Feelin’ Kinda Sunday” and “Like A Trippy Thing”. She’s also written two books about her famous father, where she tells the truth. - Why did you do it? - Because there are so many lies out there. There are so many rumours and so much gossip, and I think it was important to get the truth out there. We had a good and close relationship. What I value the most are all the times we got to spend together, having fun together, going to restaurants – and watching him on stage. |

Part two
These boots . . .
Nancy’s most well known song is «These Boots Were Made For Walking», that was all over the charts in 1966. - This song still has a life of its own. It’s so good that it goes from generation to generation. There’s always a group of girls, mothers, grandmothers that likes this song. Young girls singing and dancing in their go-go boots. Believe me, I hear these stories all the time! Nancy has been into politics, but isn’t satisfied with the way things are in the USA now. - I don’t like the republican government, because they don’t take good enough care of the people. September 11th was probably the worst day in the history of the USA. I have a daughter who lives in New Jersey, and she takes the train in to New York every day. I was very nervous when I couldn’t get hold of her for a couple of hours, as the phone communication was off. She called me when she got home, and from her house she could see one of the buildings collapse. It affected her greatly. Now she’s getting married in September, and she picked that month to have something good to remember instead of the September 11th incident. - You tried to have a comeback in 1995, but it didn’t quite go as you hoped? - The album, ”One More Time”, got attention, the promotion was good, but the music was a little bit too much country style for my fans, says Nancy. The reason why she was away from the spotlight for almost 15 years, was that her daughters were only nine and 11 years old when their father, Hugh Lambert, died in 1985. She put her career on hold when he got sick some years before that. The only thing she did was opening a couple of concerts for Frank Sinatra, then mostly so the children could spend time with their grandfather. - The record-companies either want the big stars such as Whitney Houston or Barbara Streisand, or the young new ones like Alicia Keys or Britney Spears. In rock they want, like, The Rolling Stones, and obviously I’m not them, she laughs. Women my age don’t get a lot of breaks, but I wouldn’t trade in the years I spent with my daughters for anything. PS! Nancy Sinatra is insure of what songs the Norwegian fans want to hear at the Oya-Festival, so she’d appreciate getting requests at her website: www.nancysinatra.com. - But the requests have to be in before August 4th, because then the list must be ready in order to rehearse the band. and while I'm at it, my review from Norway :) (part one)
Nancy Sinatra with golden boots
(Oslo/spot) 'These Boots Were Made For Walking', she sang in the 60’s. Now the lady is in her 60’s, but it still fully capable of entertaining a crowd. If she keeps it up like her father did, she has another 15 years to tour – and thank God for that! Terri Knudsen THE CONCERT The space in front of the “Enga” scene started filling up of hopeful fans and curious visitors, and the only thing missing was Nancy Sinatra herself. After some tense minutes of delay, the 5’1 tall Nancy Sinatra entered the stage, dressed in a gold-coloured miniskirt, a blazer, gold-boots and a matching top. I have to admit that I caught myself thinking, “I wish I had her legs…” She started off taking a picture of the crowd – for her own collection. - Hello, Norway, it's great to be here! You have such a beautiful country!, she said excitedly between the well known songs "Get Ready, Cause Here I Come", "How Does That Grab You, Darlin'?". The first surprise was when a strangely familiar tune was played, and it turned out to be "A Little Less Conversation", originally done by Elvis. The surprises didn’t end there, as she did her 60’s favourite "Like A Rollin' Stone" and the public went ecstatic as they jumped up and down and clapped their hands. She wanted us to sing during the chorus, something we obviously did with pleasure, as the mood at this point was fabulous! After a couple of other songs, among them "Friday's Child", she introduced her "KAB" - - This is my KAB! I don't know what you call it over here, but in America we call it "Kick Ass Band!. She said she had a new guitarist and a veteran who’s played with i.e. The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The next shock came when we heard I never meant to cause you any trouble, I never meant to cause you any pain from Prince’’s "Purple Rain", followed by "Son Of A Preacher Man". The public looked like they were having a wonderful time, and between the last mentioned song and "99 Miles From LA" from her new album, "California Girl", she said: - There's a sign down there saying 'Call me, Nancy', but there's no number on it! Nancy Sinatra has, as we know, played in a movie with Peter Fonda where she was riding the motorbikes with him, and maybe this was what she had in mine when she sang "Born To Be Wild"...? After "Sugar Town" and "You Only Live Twice" the highlight we were all waiting for came: "These Boots Were Made For Walking". Once again everybody jumped up and down during the whole song, while clapping and throwing water glasses in the air. Others took their shoes off and waved them in the air. - Thank you, Oslo, you're fabulous!, she smiled before the last number, "Gotta Get Out Of This Town" ended the one hour show. I can’t wait for her return in October!. |

and part two
(jeez, I obviously write too long for this forum
)BACKSTAGE It didn’t take long before she was out of the tight skirt and into a pair of jeans. Backstage she held a press conference where she answered questions about her new record with Lee Hazlewood in October. They will record a couple of new songs for a best-of with old (and also the new) songs by Nancy & Lee. She was also very sorry that she didn’t get to see anything from our beautiful country, but they arrived in Oslo too late yesterday, and left the hotel early this morning, then to go on to Edinburgh where they will be followed around by the BBC for three days. I mentioned Peter Fonda earlier, and Nancy remembered a commercial she was going to do for Harley Davidson. - All of a sudden I heard this voice going ’Nancy, is that you?’ I thought it was something familiar, turned around and almost died. It was Peter Fonda, and I swear to God, I haven’t seen him since we did the movie together in the 60’s! That was amazing! PS: Thanks, Nancy, for the wonderful time

Venice
Venetzia bella!
What a beautiful place. The flight from London was smooth and I thought about forum member Jake as we flew over the Alps. The boatride to Lido and the Hotel Excelsior made me feel so alive with the clean air and strong breezes. From the boat, the views of Venice, Lido and Murano were breathtaking because as you look at them you realize the history there. It's a wonder we didn't sink the little boat with all of our gear. We received a warm greeting from the people at the hotel and they made us feel right at home with a delicious dinner. There was a terrific band playing there so we were entertained for a little while. All in all, if we hadn't had to do a show everything would have been perfect, but then again, without a show we wouldn't have been able go. The problem was with my decision making process. I had a feeling when I heard that we would be performing for a private party of hotel guests, that we should not do it, but when I reminded them about the fact that we do a fairly loud rock show, they assured me that they were fine with that. I knew in my heart it would not work out and I was right - unfortunately. The audience was very sweet and they tried to take part in the show but it was a sit down dinner with no dance floor and they had been sitting there for more than 2 hours. By the time we came on, they they were tired and it was very late. They were polite for sure, but this was NOT a rock and roll crowd. We had a very nice meet and greet after the show and fireworks. It's ok really, since I have learned once again to go with my gut instincts. My dad always said to do that and sometimes I forget. In this case it was probably because I really wanted to see Venice.

Nancy, I can't feel too sorry for those people in Venice who had you perform at their private party. It's not too shabby to have Nancy Sinatra perform at your party!
Anyway, sorry it wasn't what you would have liked it to have been, but I'm glad the folks were polite and nice. And how wonderful to see Venice! Good luck with the rest of your tour. |

My interview with Nancy :) Part 1
Dear Nancy,
Now I understand what You were referring to regarding Venice. I'm glad the People were nice and polite to You and not rude. I know there was nothing wrong with the Show. I guess it was an unfortunate case of the right Show for the wrong Audience. I'm glad You took photographs of the Audiences. Remember all the ones who looked like this:

Oh Elizabeth, you are so dear. They all looked like that. It's just that they were so polite and we are such a rowdy bunch, it was oil and water. I felt sorry for them. I had the feeling they would rather be at the dentist! But, they were very, very sweet.
